- Potassium Permanganate Colour Change - part of our "Berzelius Day" uploading 24 videos in 24 hours. Full video containing this reaction at: • Accidental Reaction - ...
NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: The colour change is caused by the purple permanaganate ions [MnO4]- gaining electrons to form colourless Mn(+2) ions. The oxygen from the permanganate and the H2O2 are converted to H2O and O2 (which bubbles off). The extra H atoms come from the sulphuric acid H2SO4. Both the K and Mn end up as sulfates.

Lifelong veteran chemist: "That's pretty cool."
This is why chemistry is the most awesome science
And then the professor was scolded for wasting all the permanganate! xD
Jesus turned water in wine, but chemists said NO.
I saw the full video for this. I am glad you shortened it to just this reaction.
"thats pretty cool"
I have watched all of your videos. I discovered them right before you finished doing the table all the way through and spent the following Christmas break watching them all, but I am enjoying this review.
That's pretty cool.
I love the talks and I do like to review some moments like that. Please, keep the amazing job!
This was a hilarious video because the experiment didn't go according to plan, and when this happened, I laughed my butt off.
this moment was priceless
@periodicvideos Loving this rapid fire series of Chemistry shorts!
Chemistry is a wonderful thing.
I might just do that. Thank god for Netflix and Dr Who.
Living this is so exciting! Thank you for all your videos.
Now, only to explain why a whole bottle of permanganate is gone. Lol.
Really like the professors happy face at 0:29 :D
I have to stay up till 6am to find out if i've been accepted into university, these should help pass the time!
kind of looks like the video is playing forwards and backwards at the point where he pours the permanganate into the h2o2 solution
I honestly thought the video was playing in reverse at the start.
Yeah I've seen all of them aswell.. Was pretty disappointed when I found out they'd all be re-runs :(
Brady, it seems you know us too well. It is incredibly tempting to stay up for the next reaction, but considering it is already past 2 am here in Norway, and I have work "tomorrow" morning, I should probably go to sleep...
would have been cool if you revisted each of these, maybe put a new twist on these classic reactions.
Indeed its pretty cool. Its awesome!
I'm disappointed.. but 24 videos in a day is better than none! :D
Thanks a million for this Brady, hope you can keep it up! =D
This video was great. A mistake ended up creating a pretty cool demonstration. :)
Haha, and I'm watching it as I dye my hair violet right now ;) Except I use gentian violet for that. ;)
Damn does this mean I'm going to be up all night?
martyn poliakoff, destroyer of permanganates.
Fantastic.
so you're just going to show us old clips? I expected new stuff :(
Is there anyway that this guy can be my grandfather?
Wasted, or made better?
i think you can do timed uploads automatically
Reminds me of Didi Seven, a stain remover.
Did you mix the hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid? :) I'd like to this as my chemistry experiment :)
best of wishes!
but its already 2am here xD
will you stay awake for 24 hours uploading videos??
I didn't think these were going to be repeats. Shame.
i saw this before! :)
pretty cool :)
yeah... confused me for a while
it's trolling us
Hahaha wow. Thats awesome!!!
where is your god now!!
poop!
third haha
second ...shit
first
