I used to own a hedgehog and whenever she smelled something new or something she liked, she would open her mouth similarly to Maui and make a lot of spit, and then rolling in it, so she could smell like that thing. I believe it’s called anointing.

When the cat smells something new and open their mouth they are saving the sent. All cats do this even bigger cats like lions does it. They have a spot in their mouth that conects the sent to memory.
Edit: if your cat bits you when you give him treets then you should give them with an open palm, like you would with a horse, not with your fingers.
