When Southern said goodbye, Fred Dinenage was there. When TVS bid farewell, Fred Dinenage was there. When Meridian was swallowed into corporate ITV, Fred Dinenage was there too. Can’t help thinking he’s a bloody jinx.

ITV certainly hit the buffers after this mess of a Franchise auction. The South & South East lost a broadcaster which produced countless quality programmes for the region and the network and local news which was much better than South Today. Its a shame the programme archive has been lost due to ownership changes and lost paperwork etc. Well done for keeping these snippets online!

    • @georgeholland2934
      @georgeholland2934 ปีที่แล้ว

Absolutely agree. It was a very ambitious and successful regional broadcaster and contributor to the national network. Coast to Coast was the most watched regional news programme in the country by audience share. Little wonder. How crazy the ITV franchise auction system was.

The final Coast to Coast from Southampton even ran a story about Meridian and the opening of the Newbury studio! Whatever the feeling was off-screen, nobody can say TVS came across as bitter, nasty and spiteful the way Southern Television did. When TVS did there very last programme Goodbye To All That. TVS did it with fun joy happiness pride and also thanked the TVS views for the last 10-11 years there had been on the air. Also, Fred and Fern wish Merdian good luck as well. Although Fred and Fern would be working with Merdian. TVS did no up yours to the ITC and Merdian. Not like Southern Television when they did there last programme Goodbye From Us back in 1981 when they did an all-mighty Up yours to the IBA and TVS I bet a lot of senior people at Southern were hoping that TVS would fail and they would be asked to come back. Sorry Southern but the IBA made its decision and that was that you had to accept it

ITV Alexa (Amazon parody): at the pub, then she's going to Big Ben.
      All regions: Aaaaaaaaa.
Yorkshire: Yorkies, I forgot to cue the You've Been Framed episode starting now! *rushes to Alexa* Alexa, start the Beadle fall-over show, You've Been Framed!
TSW and Westward: Let's hope Westcountry retains Gus Honeybun!
Westcountry: I am not because he has been on TV for 31 years!
Channel: Well that means I just need to keep Puffins Pla(i)ce.
Granada Nighttime Cat: TSW, you are doomed. Me and Westcountry have made a deal that we will replace that weird planet ident with me, the cat. That means all the nighttime horror is coming back to South West England.
Bluestone: Thank goodness i have Bluenight.
All regions exept Bluestone: What regions do you carry?
Bluestone: I serve the Granada region on weekends, the west midlands, The Borders on weekends and North Wales.
      Meridian: So overexited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bluenight: I am going to start serving every region and I hope it is completed by 1994.
All regions exept Westcountry: Great idea!
      (Bluenight starts to dance)
      TVS: I love my name
      (Southren chokes TVS)
(All regions slap, push and force choke Southern)
All regions: We so so so hate you Southern!
(Southern gets kicked out of ITV house)
Southern: I am going to Channel 4's house to invade them.
TVS and Bluestone: Thank goodness that terribly behaved star is gone.
      All regions: Yes!

Looking at the game/quiz program montage at 37:23-39:23, do you happen to have anything of "Love Me Love Me Not", "Hitman", or "Tell The Truth"? All were imports from North America, and I'm particularly interested in Hitman since it only got 65 shows here in the States.

Hi, yes, you are so right about many of the comments here slagging off Southern TV. Of course, most of them probably weren’t even born when Southern TV was around and therefore know fuck all. I was born in the 60s and grew up in the Southern Region and the channel produced great programs, especially for us kids at that time. We also had Thames TV so we had like four channels in a way. We had BBC, Thames, and our local channel, Southern. It was a sad day when Southern lost its franchise to TVS and just because Southern did not celebrate with fireworks does not give people the right to slag a station just because of that.

I must say I wasn't overly sad to see TVS go, as I remember the poor way Southern ended up losing their franchise and it looks like Southern have a bit of the last laugh with a few of their surviving shows being repeated on Talking Pictures TV and with TVS library now owned by Disney, theirs will probably never see the light of day except for U-tube.

Erm l'm sorry but if you call all that crap then you clearly didn't watch it from beginning to end - TVS as in the tradition of Thames and others of the old broadcasters and again as this closing TVS broadcast shows, were extremely proud of their output which back then unlike the post early 90's changes that followed them, did make their own stuff. Yes TVS were not as big as Thames but still TVS had a class about them from their on air theme through to their programming just like Thames LWT etc. so l'm sorry but you calling all that old archive of programming crap is an insult to common sense! Seriously the crap is what has come since all the great names of TVS Thames and so on disappeared as the regional structure of ITV forever!!

Looking at Wikipedia it says this.
"Closing ceremony[edit]TVS ceased broadcasting to the south and south east of England at just before midnight on 31 December 1992. While most other ITV stations were broadcasting the Thames Television farewell programme The End of the Year Show, TVS chose to opt out and air its own final programme entitled Goodbye to All That, a retrospective of its programming presented by Fred Dinenage and Fern Britton, recorded in front of a studio audience at the Northam studios in Southampton earlier. The programme closed with an amended version of the TVS ident, along with the message Thanks for watching before crossing to Big Ben for the New Year chimes at midnight and the handover to Meridian Broadcasting."So looks like it was pre-recorded.

Thank you for your kind comments it look like they had a great last day when TVS did it with pride joy and happiness and fun and no up yours to the ITC and wishing Meridian good luck unlike Southern when they did there last ever broadcast back in 1981 which was done as a up yours to The IBA and to TVS for saying you made an almighty mistake taking our franchise away but they will never be a perfect way to issue and reissue franchise what happened was the decision of the IBA and the ITC

@@ADCTVCollection It was indeed pre-recorded! On the ITN Early Evening News on that day, they mentioned "at TVS the final programme has already been recorded" so it sounds like it was pre-recorded, not live

@@ianmorris3998 logistically it would make sense to have been done so early, as arranging all the guests and staff would have been difficult if live plus the end was in sight by then anyway
