It's the "Mandela Effect". Hauler came in from an alternate timeline thanks to Megatron screwing with time travel as seen in Beastwars. Hauler = Grapple from another timeline after the timelines split into 2 seperate G1 realities. It also explains why nobody dies in the tv show. Somehow the souls/sparks are able to be snatch from the transformers in the past and brought into the present and placed into an undamaged clone body to 'revive' fallen warriors. Much like the insecticons the clones have all the memory of past defeats and this is what makes transformers such good fighters as they learn from mistakes of previous lost battles.

For most intents and purposes that should be the better assumption. Both Hauler and the briefly mentioned Gravedigger were just prototype characters that only appeared accidentally, and only ever became more than accidents as an excuse to make exclusive collector figures.

There's been so many new characters added from the live action films that you could create a new 6 transformer configuration of devastor from the new ones while still having the same g1 devastor line up as a another devastor.

That would explain why Hauler looks *exactly* like Grapple. But hey, great video as always! :)
Well, in Hauler's case I think you have to take it in historical context. In 2003, there hadn't been a big return to the world of G1 yet, nor was there a wiki meticulously chronicling every minor character, we'd only JUST had the cartoon released on DVD, and eHOBBY were creating some of the first ever new G1-family characters with their reissues. Hauler was sold concurrently with the first Sunstorm toy - another eye-catching enigma from the cartoon pilot fans had a cult interest in for years - so it just all added up to make sense and be interesting at the time.

The show routinely depicted extra seekers in different colors to fill out crowd shots so those character more definitively existed all along, even if originally only as unnamed grunts. Hauler was the inverse, just a name who otherwise looked identical to another character that would show up later and really probably should have made more sense being handwaved as such. Personally speaking, while I don't mind the idea of extra Consticons, trying to also shoehorn him in as what is otherwise an early bird cameo of prototype-Grapple is just way too convoluted for my own taste.
Hauler: once an early version of Grapple, nearly the champ of a fan poll, now star of a Walmart exclusive Legacy subline. Keep on trucking, you funky little crane man. Keep on trucking.
I like the idea of Hauler in his green n purple colour scheme being that he was a construction member that fled to join the Autobots, meaning devastator would be formed originally by 7-8 members, so they had to reconfigure so they could form Devastator with only 6 members, that's a cool unique idea that could stand to be explored more in comics. It's possible the Constructicons (in-story) were originally like the Seacons, with the "extra" members of the team becoming weapons or equipment for Devastator. The whole idea that there used to be eight Constructicons could also be used to explain why Devastator is often portrayed with an erratic personality. Without Hauler and Gravedigger, Devastator's mind could be incomplete.
I gotta say, I love learning about the obscure stuff more than the mainstream. Mostly because it’s more interesting to see what people overlooked or underestimated. I usually find hidden gems, and Hauler here is a gem. Speaking of which, Chris, could you do a marathon on the smaller Transformers?
I always liked that G1 Inferno/Grapple mould... I really like the idea of him being an ex Constructicon back in Cybertron! Maybe he changed his color on Earth in order to not be detected by his old team and changed his name to Grapple!...😁

It's been waaay too long since I read "Dinobots Strike Back" Yet you picked the only illustration from the book I actually remember. That picture only showed up if the reader chose a route that lead to a bad ending. Something about Long Haul / Gravedigger luring Autobots to their deaths.

You're not gonna believe this, but Road Hauler has got a new toy in the Legacy toyline! A retool and recolor of the Earthrise Grapple toy as part of the Velocitron Speedia 500 subline.
Hauler or released as Road Hauler was just rereleased earlier this year as part of the Transformers Legacy: Velocitron Speedo’s 500 Collection. He’s just a repaint of Grapple from the Earthrise toy line but it is still nice to finally have him alongside the Autobots and the Contructicons
Hauler was one of the first Transformer toys I ever got. I got him from a thrift store with Wheeljack and Soundwave with Buzzsaw. However, I know him as Grapple because I got his Tech Spec card. I got a whole bunch of them that a collector cut from the packaging and, for some unknown reason, donated them to a thrift store where I got them (I got a lot of Transformers and Go-Bots from a local thrift store chain).

I remember thinking that Hauler was some hastely made filler character for that scene. Even as a 10 year old I didn't think "Hauler" was a real Transformer name. It wasn't cool like most of the others. Then Grapple came out and I thought "Oh, it was supposed to be Grapple. They just hadn't come up with his real name yet"
It would be interesting to see Hauler team up with Omega Supreme. Since, they both lost the same friends to the Decepticons. While, Omega Supreme thinks the Constructicon can't be redeemed. Hauler believes that there's still goodness in his former comrades.
I'm really becoming fond of Hauler. I mean, I've got a weakness for green 'bots anyway (favorite color), and though I'm not obsessed with construction equipment, I like the idea of how they can be so tactical in the Autobot/Decepticon conflicts. Taking advantage of animation errors to establish the Constructicons as a larger group also works well; it isn't that Megatron was able to reprogram all of them, just the six most famous ones. Eh, I'm both honest and fickle, so who knows if Hauler will retain my interest or favor for long? XP
Thanks for this month! I find myself to enjoy the obscure basics more than those on popular characters. I mean it's always nice to learn a few things about Soundwave or Prowl but we pretty much know where they come from, these characters however a lot of us only know a little bit about, or nothing at all.
I for one would like that! After I read about him, I found the character and his backstory to be fascinating. But the colour-change power? Nah! Anyway, I plan on including him in my upcoming fanfiction novel series that starts in an alternate 2017 (similar to the Independance Day sequel and part of a timeline similar to the Bumblebee film). He wouldn't be part of my main cast, but he'd be a member of the Ark crew and get highlighted adventures in future books I'll write. Plus, a toy that's not from E-Hobby or a Japanese eBay guy would be nice!
Wow, I never knew about this. When the cartoon first aired, I didn't remember that they called out Hauler, and thought it was just Grapple. It is truly amazing how much they have come up with for a character who appeared in one scene. I have to ask though, if you do basics on the Constructicons (or an updated version as I'm pretty sure you've done one already), will you include Hauler and Gravedigger? If they are considered to be or officially declared to be retcon, it seems they should at least be mentioned. However, I leave it in your very competent hands. Hauler may have disappeared. But he is not forgotten. In this "Hall of Fame," there needs to be a listing of "Forgotten Obscure Transformers". Maybe end up getting some gears loose and the idea processors booping. All to shed a bit of light on these characters.
I seriously wasn't expecting the eighth Constructicon to be named "Gravedigger." I'd heard the theory about Hauler being a former Constructicon from Cardboard Bots, and turns out it was true! Neat! But the eighth Constructicon being called Gravedigger? Did people seriously forget Dirt Boss exists? Is he a NINTH Constructicon that we never knew about? Or does he even count? Well Dirt Boss is only a Constructicons in Animated which came out in 2007 Graveddiger's first appearence was in a book in 1985(And they even called him by name) So...

The fans had ONE JOB when Hauler was a candidate for the Hall of Fame as a Season 1 character, and I'm still mad that we failed to get him there (the remaining members of the '84 get-along gang are inevitable, but he probably won't get another chance now); at least he's going to get a mainline toy in Wal-Mart's Legacy subline now, but still...

Hauler, I remember hearing about him. Not much those. Just that he was with the Constructicon before the war and mostly that he shares the same body type as Grapple, Inferno and Artfire. 1:53 I always thought that crane vehicle was Grapple, not Hauler. 2:03 It's cool that he finally got a toy, in his constructicon green color scheme. 2:23 His with the Construction team is a cool fact. I wonder where he would had fit in as Devastator? 2:46 The reconning of his disappearance after his first and only appearance is interesting. He travels the world for energy rescouce for the Autobots. He would have fit in TF: Prime, as the Autobots were looking for Energon. 3:32 This is definitely Haulers deepest darkest secret, that he took part of constructing Megatron. 4:01 Gravedigger: The 8th member of the Constructicons and younger brother to Bonecrusher. I like him as a distinct character. I honestly didn't like his TF: United EX buildmaster figures. I also do wonder where he would fit in as Devastator. 5:09 It's strange that with all the Grapple toys released, there's no repaint as Hauler. Hopefully with TF: Earthrise releasing a Grapple toy, maybe Hauler could be around the corner. But he might be in the Generations Select section.
Grapple (aka. Hauler) is the fave Cybertron (Autobot) rarest ally ever in the history, G1 Transformers. I used to have Diaclone toy during my child days back then.
When I first saw the cartoon episode in question I always assumed "Hauler" was a nickname for an unseen human driver of the crane in the same way "Spike" and "Sparkplug" were the names of the humans in the show. I never knew this character existed until now, which is cool.
Transformers fans are some of the best of any franchise. Any other fandom would have lost their minds if they saw an animation error or a disappearing Autobot, but TF fans just make lemons out of lemonade and just make a new character all together.
I had always assumed they just made a mistake and that was always Grapple. I had no idea Hauler was intended to be a different character. The more you know!
Hauler, the character that wasn't, the one behind the cameras, the one that vanished... I must admit I didn't know about Hauler before, but after this video I'll remember him as th first true mistery of the TF franchise. Let's hope he can get a toy in Siege. PS: Basics on Deathsaurus?

Great stuff! That episode of transformers was nuts. The Constructacons _built_ Megatron? Then he betrayed him? Man, the writers had no respect for children back in the day. I remember watching that episode when it aired and it just rubbed me all the wrong way. I’m glad that origin for Megatron was scrapped in the comics and Transformers Prime.
Hauler, the first, "What happened to him?" Transformers character. He disappeared before Starscream even became cosmically powered.
Maybe Reflector & Jet...Skyfire went to join him on an island somewhere.

Thanks for this month! I find myself to enjoy the obscure basics more than those on popular characters. I mean it's always nice to learn a few things about Soundwave or Prowl but we pretty much know where they come from, these characters however a lot of us only know a little bit about, or nothing at all.
Hauler needs some love! If Acidstorm gets some love, HE should too!

I for one would like that! After I read about him, I found the character and his backstory to be fascinating. But the colour-change power? Nah! Anyway, I plan on including him in my upcoming fanfiction novel series that starts in an alternate 2017 (similar to the Independance Day sequel and part of a timeline similar to the Bumblebee film). He wouldn't be part of my main cast, but he'd be a member of the Ark crew and get highlighted adventures in future books I'll write. Plus, a toy that's not from E-Hobby or a Japanese eBay guy would be nice!
Decided to give this video a rewatch after getting the new Road Hauler figure from the Velictron Speedia 500 line.
I like the idea of Autobot Constructicons. Makes me wish Hauler started up his own team after joining the Autobots.
I always thought the Autobots hired a human crane driver.
Wow, I never knew about this. When the cartoon first aired, I didn't remember that they called out Hauler, and thought it was just Grapple. It is truly amazing how much they have come up with for a character who appeared in one scene. I have to ask though, if you do basics on the Constructicons (or an updated version as I'm pretty sure you've done one already), will you include Hauler and Gravedigger? If they are considered to be or officially declared to be retcon, it seems they should at least be mentioned. However, I leave it in your very competent hands. Well, looks like you've got everything you wanted.
Hauler may have disappeared. But he is not forgotten. In this "Hall of Fame," there needs to be a listing of "Forgotten Obscure Transformers". Maybe end up getting some gears loose and the idea processors booping. All to shed a bit of light on these characters.

I seriously wasn't expecting the eighth Constructicon to be named "Gravedigger." I'd heard the theory about Hauler being a former Constructicon from Cardboard Bots, and turns out it was true! Neat! But the eighth Constructicon being called Gravedigger? Did people seriously forget Dirt Boss exists? Is he a NINTH Constructicon that we never knew about? Or does he even count?

Well Dirt Boss is only a Constructicons in Animated which came out in 2007
Graveddiger's first appearence was in a book in 1985(And they even called him by name)

The fans had ONE JOB when Hauler was a candidate for the Hall of Fame as a Season 1 character, and I'm still mad that we failed to get him there (the remaining members of the '84 get-along gang are inevitable, but he probably won't get another chance now); at least he's going to get a mainline toy in Wal-Mart's Legacy subline now, but still...

Hauler, I remember hearing about him. Not much those. Just that he was with the Constructicon before the war and mostly that he shares the same body type as Grapple, Inferno and Artfire.
1:53 I always thought that crane vehicle was Grapple, not Hauler.
2:03 It's cool that he finally got a toy, in his constructicon green color scheme.

2:46 The reconning of his disappearance after his first and only appearance is interesting. He travels the world for energy rescouce for the Autobots. He would have fit in TF: Prime, as the Autobots were looking for Energon.

4:01 Gravedigger: The 8th member of the Constructicons and younger brother to Bonecrusher. I like him as a distinct character. I honestly didn't like his TF: United EX buildmaster figures. I also do wonder where he would fit in as Devastator.
5:09 It's strange that with all the Grapple toys released, there's no repaint as Hauler. Hopefully with TF: Earthrise releasing a Grapple toy, maybe Hauler could be around the corner. But he might be in the Generations Select section.
I love the way he looks, in fact he might be one of the best looking g1 figures considering how bad most of the g1 robots were in bot mode.
Grapple (aka. Hauler) is the fave Cybertron (Autobot) rarest ally ever in the history, G1 Transformers. I used to have Diaclone toy during my child days back then.

Guys! Hauler has a brand new toy, A repaint of the most recent Grapple Toy. I just got it yesterday!
These are a sweet marvel of design. Surprisingly soulful.
When I first saw the cartoon episode in question I always assumed "Hauler" was a nickname for an unseen human driver of the crane in the same way "Spike" and "Sparkplug" were the names of the humans in the show. I never knew this character existed until now, which is cool.
Transformers fans are some of the best of any franchise. Any other fandom would have lost their minds if they saw an animation error or a disappearing Autobot, but TF fans just make lemons out of lemonade and just make a new character all together.
Funny how accidents and being stumped on something can totally rewrite an entire storyline lol
I had always assumed they just made a mistake and that was always Grapple. I had no idea Hauler was intended to be a different character. The more you know!

Hauler, the character that wasn't, the one behind the cameras, the one that vanished... I must admit I didn't know about Hauler before, but after this video I'll remember him as th first true mistery of the TF franchise. Let's hope he can get a toy in Siege.

The Earthrise Grappel figure will almost definitely get a repaint as Hauler, although it'll probably be an online exclusive or something.

The best of this character is when it got linked with the constructicons due to those messy scenes in the Cristal city episode. Hahaha cheap cartoons caused all this interesting and nice theories. Great job like always Mr Mcfeely

The Constructacons _built_ Megatron? Then he betrayed him? Man, the writers had no respect for children back in the day. I remember watching that episode when it aired and it just rubbed me all the wrong way. I’m glad that origin for Megatron was scrapped in the comics and Transformers Prime.
I always thought "Hauler" was a misnamed "Grapple"...... but this episode proved me wrong!! ...... Oh well ...... *sigh*
