    Peter Garrett is the epitome of 'complete freedom of expression' to me. In all honesty I envy his ability to completely be himself without giving a f*** what anyone thinks. I absolutely love watching him dance like a whirling dervish. So grateful I got to see them multiple times during the 80's - & never bar never were they anything less than brilliant and full of power and passion.

    “Oils on the Water” is a concert video, it got its name because it’s on a small island in Sydney Harbour.
    The whole concert is sensational- absolutely worth watching the whole thing.

    Midnight Oil was THE BAND in Australia back in the 80's. One great album after another and always brilliant live. Peter Garrett was a hell of a frontman with his manic dancing, his magnetic stage presence, his striking appearance, his fierce delivery and his unique unmistakable voice (not great in any traditional sense, but it cut through like a knife.) He was also an important voice in Australia for nuclear disarmament, conservation and aboriginal land rights. Nobody raised awareness for these issues like Garrett did. In his songs, live shows, interviews, tv appearances and by leading many protest actions. He put these things front and square in the consciousness of millions of Australians. Not everyone agreed with his activism, but his fiery passion was undeniable... and all politics aside, the band were fucking awesome. All their old albums have aged well. They still sound great to this day... "Head Injuries"... "Place Without A Postcard"... "10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1"... "Red Sails in the Sunset"... "Species Deceases" EP... "Diesel and Dust"... "Blue Sky Mining"...

      Carl Marks, couldn’t have said it any better myself. I don’t know what the other 4 albums would be, but Head Injuries is one album I could be stuck on a desert island with to listen to forever if I had only 5 albums to take.

    I see you actually react to a lot of Midnight Oils recently, which makes me curious more on this band. Then, I checked and I found out some hidden gems. I wished a lot of people can recognize this band more and listen to their song more cause it's so good 🤩

      😁 May 1990, MO closed down NYC with an Exxon Oil protest, show, played SNL & a show I had tickets to for my 🥳 BDay! 😉 It was an AMAZING weekend! 🐰

    Yep, I saw the Oils last ever live gig in Melbourne, Australia a few weeks back at Rod Laver Arena (15,000-) I got covid, and funnily enough so did Peter Garrett. Do it all again in a heart beat. Seen them live so many time I’ve lost count. I’ve actually grown old with the band from the late 70s to now on their final tour, going out on top, still at the top of their game, the best, no other band has moved my soul like the Oils. Hands down best live band ever,their live sound so tight it’s makes them the kings, yes I’m hardcore Oils and proud of it 😊🙏

    One of my all time favorite bands! I broke the dashboard of my car playing air drums on it while listen to “Best of Both Worlds”. If you get the chance, listen to “Best of Both Worlds” and “Kosciusko”. Songs with such incredible driving beats. Continue with deeper album cuts and you will get to hear the indigenous Australian instruments such as the Didgeridoo, Bullroarer, Clapstick and Tandrum. Midnight Oil uses them to great effect. Continue your journey and listen to some other fantastic Australian musicians such as The Divinyls, James Reyne, and Psuedo Echo.

    Saw the oils live in 1985 when I lived in Australia, first time at Rockhampton music bowl up in Queensland.Then at the end of that year saw them at the Sydney entertainment centre, the save our rain forest gig. Last 2 oils gigs for me were 2019 at Manchester appollo here in UK and 1990 Birmingham NEC for blue sky mine, european tour. That oils on water gig is one I wished I had been at, but I watched it on the ABC channel in Queensland when it was first aired. Awesome memories of a great time for oz/nz rock n pop 👍 🇦🇺

      I still have this digitised from VHS, from recording it on the ABC 😄
      ..& Yep,the oils were still killing it live a few years back at the Perth Arena 🖐️
      On a return note..the best gig I ever saw was when I lived in the UK from '90-'93,as a 25yo...Live Baby Live - INXS. Incredible vibe inside Wembley Stadium at that gig! 😎

    I am 54 years old, and midnight oil has been my conscience and soul since I was 13. Their raw passion and human rights and environment issues in their songs is what has made me who I am today, a 54 year old male that believes our conviction that is what defines us.
    Thanks again for another epic reaction 🤘❤️

    Midnight Oil is a very unusual band. They definitely have these types of songs that you just want to bang your head to and it's a release. However, they also have a lot of very vibey music that will put you into a different head space. On top of that, their early stuff walks this very bizarre line between punk and a specific cultural/Aussie sound. That's a heck of a mix and I don't really know any other band that managed to pull all of that off with a front man that resembled a tree on speed.

    Peter Garrett is now 70 years old. Unfortunately, Bones Hillman, the bassist, passed away a few years ago from cancer. He was 62.

    I have seen Midnight Oil several times. They always put on an amazing show. They have a great new album out, and I hope to catch them on what appears to be their final tour.

    They are currently doing their final ever tour after releasing their latest album 'Resist'. They have said they will release further albums, just no more tours.

    They are the bomb!I have seen then live before in London then Australia where I am now, they are from Sydney,where I live.everybody here hoped that one Day Peter would be the prime minister one day! And they just released a new album and are still touring this year.i actually met Peter in an art gallery in Sydney when he was there.!for another "release"song, check Let there be rock by AC/DC! They are also from Sydney 😎😊

    A snapshot of late 1970’s Australia the Vietnam war is over. And so is the hope and optimism of the 1960’s. The song is a reflection of the destroyed dreams of the counterculture. Foreign companies are mining our wealth. Young people have no hope but to line up and take unemployment benefits (stand in line). Don’t revolt and make a noise. But midnight oil are telling you to dance and scream. The clash and the sex pistols wrote similar songs. But this is a very Australian post punk protest song.
