    There are some Sabol minors native to Oklahoma. I have a Sabol minor growing in zone 5, and several needle palms.

    Thanks for the video. I am a fan of all types of palms, but I have a great affinity for Sabal minor. I grew up in southeast VA and grew many S. minor of different "types". They were all hardy there with no protection. My experience was that the 'Hatteras' S. minor had huge leaves, and the var. Louisiana (in addition to huge leaves), would grow a 2-4'trunk after many years. The nativity of those is self explanatory. Then I had very compact plants that were sold to me as ' McCurtain Co.' - coming from the county of the same name in Oklahoma! They are as hardy as you can get in a S.minor. There are others - most of which can be mail ordered from specialty. As a buyer for a retail nursery, I promoted palms, and bought many S.minor from nurseries in the McClenney area of Florida. Most of that material was intermediate in stature- probably open seedling in origin . I have two questions for you about S.minor. Could the small coastal dune growing plants actually be Sabal etonia? I have grown them, and find them difficult to distinguish apart. Secondly, have you ever seen Sabal palmetto flower directly from the ground like S. minor? I was under the impression that it only flowered after development of some trunk - and then from the crown itself,as opposed to the ground
    Thanks

    Always informative - this palm actually grew in the botanic gardens in Brooklyn ny until last year when they unknowingly cut it down ~ I had planted it there in the late 60’s - the new guy working there cut it down inadvertently last year sadly - aLos there is a full grown Sabal palmetto and a trachycarpus palm growing outdoors in bay ridge Brooklyn for many years no protection at all

      Wow, I have been there a few times, I wish I had seen it when I was younger. Do you have any pictures? I don't think this has ever been discussed on any forums, but so glad you have added to their collection. So sorry to hear about the minor being cut down, would they planted another if it was given to them?

    I have a scrub Sabal minor that came out of Texas south of Amarillo that grew in a valley! It is 14 years old, and only 16 inches tall. Very unusual never has produced seed yet.

    How well do Sabal Minor do in windy spots? Are they wind tolerant!? Do the palm fans get damaged easily or not grow well in wind? Thanks.

    Hey Christian, good work on the Vid. Have you, or are you planning to do a Vlog on Sabal Mauritiiformis? I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts?
    Cheers 👍🏻

      If you do a search there should be a video on that species. Let me know if there isn't!

    Is it preventable to have a palm garden
    And not get hybrid seeds from them. Not saying hybrids are bad though

    Christian, are the Louisiana’s an eco type or var. louisiana? I’m not sure about the correct botanical name

    • @TheCfkingfish
      @TheCfkingfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is actually a variation, so it would be Sabal minor var. Louisiana. It can change depending on who is in charge at Kew though. :)

    You gave misinformation about Saw Palmettos not native to Florida! They are native to SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA
