Most factories still use the same methods that have been in production since the 1980s, technology programme BBC Click reports.
There’s also a backlog due to the impact of the pandemic.
It means that some artists and fans are having to wait at least a year to get their hands on one.

I like it that he says that they're making "vinyl records" while using "no PVC" (the "V" in "PVC" is for "vinyl"). I know nothing about vinyl records and am not an audiophile, but I do know that PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) - the stuff he uses instead - is not vinyl...
Anyway, I'm all for protecting the environment (and, thus, ourselves), but I think we should first focus on things that are more problematic to our environment than vinyl records (which are quite rare, and are unlikely to be thrown away in less than several decades from the time they're being bought).

Also, can we point out that yeah, PVC is bad for the environment, but using it for music records is hardly bad for the environment, people don't like throw out their vinyls, if they have any they probably already decided they liked collecting them. Maybe throw a fit about PVC being used *in a way that is bad for the environment* instead of just throwing a fit about Vinyl Records because they're made of PVC. All in all, I'd say that's a pretty good use for it, fairly non damaging, long lasting collectibles.

The environmental concerns surrounding plastic production aren't just about where it ends up, but also the harm caused by the production process itself, such as the energy (fossil fuels) consumed to create the product - almost all PVC used to press vinyl records is derived from virgin plastic, which undeniably has a negative impact on the environment. Of course the vinyl record industry only accounts for a tiny percentage of plastic production, but it's a little disingenuous to disregard the concerns raised without presenting the whole picture.
A record is something you can keep for centuries... maybe first start with shit that gets thrown away after just a couple of days/months like plastic in cars, grocery shopping, toys...

The band King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard produce a lot of records and they've replaced shrink wrap with paper outer sleeves and the GVR (recycled PET plastic) record I own is one of their albums. If they decided to do all of them this way I wouldn't be surprised because many of their songs (and whole albums) are about environmental destruction.

Newsflash this isn't the 1970's anymore. It's 2022 technology has changed the way we listen to our music. Back in the day I listened to my music on DAT cassettes and mini discs in the late 1990s, something different from the regular CD and cassettes. My Alpine car audio took the music to a different level.
Some enforcement molecules added into the recycled PET would most probably fix the lastability/quality question - check out Nexam Chemical and their plastic enhancement process.

What is overlooked is the amount of material used for vinyl records versus other use cases of plastic. Lets say someone builds a collection of 500 vinyls over 10 years. That is 60 kilos or 6kg per year, more than typical. How many kg of packaging material does this vinyl collector buy and throw away as a side product of food, cleaning detergent, shampoo etc.. How many tons of pvc flooring is produced each year for hospitals, schools, homes?

I have a GVR (recycled PET plastic injection molded) record and it looks and sounds as good, or better, than my vinyl pressings. If the whole industry went in this direction that would be great. You could create audiophile quality LPs with garbage - now that's upcycling!

Music also can be distributed in completely lossless ear healthy electronic way using no other data storage than most modern available. But one can not touch an album bought in electronic form. If its not our cars, its what we eat... now its what/how we listen to something ?. There is far bigger concerns than vinyl for Christ sake. Youve got 60 year old records still being sold/kept, there's small runs of whatever decade, that still get sold. You might as well, attack steaming while your at it and the infrastructure needed to maintain that.
It's called vinyl because it is made of PV(vinyl)C. If you make it out of PET, you would have to call it something else. PVC is used because it is supposed to be long lasting. You wouldn't leave your record in the sun to degrade or throw it away if you actually like the music. It should last for years and there is no environmental issue with disposal so there is no point in making it with PET. Why would anyone want to recycle a record?

Stop being such a pedant, they wouldn't need to be called something else because the term 'vinyl' is ingrained in popular culture, and has been for decades. Films are still referred to as films even though most are no longer shot on, or displayed/viewed on film. Words/terms often evolve separate meanings and usages from their etymological beginnings.

Stop making coloured vinyl !! I've always thought the sound is not as good as black vinyl and some artists now on the band wagon releasing 4-5 coloured copies of the same album is a joke. Reproduction of this type is only capable if you own a very expensive system. Is the recording digital? Because as I understand the music system reproduction is digital.

Which is just stupid, NO ONE needs vinyl, I don't care how nostalgic they are. Yes, a few records never make it out of vinyl, and I have some and a record player unit, but I'm certainly not going to go out and buy any.more. That's just selfish stupidity.

Audio systems now need a Virtue Signal level adjustment to accommodate this more profitable, but of course 'greener', medium. (Hint, it's not greener). no one has been worrying about vinyl's impact on our planet, but typical BBC making us THINK others are by saying so. No, we aren't, in fact vinyl records are one of the most environmentally friendly forms of plastic. Why? Because few people throw them into the garbage. It won't save almost any part of the world we live in but they'll make more of a profit (cheaper tooling and easier production) and you will feel good about it but your bank manager won't (theirs will). (PET won't last as long as PVC after multiple plays btw - they NEVER mention that). If you genuinely worry about the environment enough to muster the energy to demand a lower-quality production change for LP records, then you should stick to digital streaming, seriously. As usual, 0.01% of cluster b people are attempting to ruin another thing for the other 99%.
