Pocket Squirrel at 4:13 This painting was absolutely fantastic! The evergreens, and the river with rocks and the 2 big trees at the end. I love how bob makes the rivers bend and curve like that it REALLY makes it so dimensional and you can feel yourself going down that bend. That along with the soft grass and soft blue sky makes for a great experience of joy. :)
A genius is someone who can explain the complex stuff simply, and to do that you need to observe, learn, be passionate, suffer, fall down, analyze, stand back. I think the deeper parts of this that make it more difficult are the factors involved in knowing the way the light should shine on things and the details of shaping that decide how trees should look. Ultimately, being able to combine imagination with an understanding of how things should realistically look is the real difficulty in this.

This may be the only painting in which I’m not totally clear about how preparation was done. So the entire dark background including the lower 2/3 of the painting and the treetops were all done with black gesso using the same sponge? How do you make tree top shapes like that with the sponge? He then says the top was coated with liquid white… That must have been done before the tree tops, correct? Otherwise you would be trying to apply that between all the details of the trees. The liquid clear I can see easily being applied over the trees, but then where do the liquid clear and liquid white merge? Can you mix those two together? And finally when he said he added a bit of color over the treetops to create mist, how is it that we can still see the tree tops? Was that color mostly transparent? If so how was that achieved? Tons of paint thinner or something?
I'm sure you've figured it out by now but just in case. Use the cheap sponges with wood handles in the wall paint section of Wal Mart. Chisel edge for the trees. Let black gesso dry. Apply liquid white to top 1/3 of painting to create mist. Over the black gesso it's transparent. Apply liquid clear where you don't have liquid white, blend where they meet. Liquid clear is basically an oil, liquid white is basically the same oil, with a bit of white paint added. Both will create a little transparency in whatever layer they are under.
Cautious warning beginner oil painters: Oil paints and supplies are expansive to buy. If you are a beginner, you may want to be careful of investing lots of money in oil painting supplies in case you find working with oil paints difficult to work for you. Oil paintings are and you may find yourself frustrated and giving away your supplies and losing your large investment. You may want to try acrylic paints first that are water based before getting into oils .
Can you believe there are people disliking these bob ross videos? Talk about problems they really need their heads examined they have much more problems than a miami condo or a payment for a BMW!
Just curious. I was thinking of growing a moustache I can't grow a full goatee but I can get some thick chin and moustache hair so.... If I grow one which is the best moustache or do they look best when they are in a goatee. I'll read anything about moustaches really
Could anybody explain me what Bob put in the top of the canvas?. Because, above the black gesso, It looks like he put a thin coat of sap green or something like that. But he didn't explain anything about that, he just talks about the black gesso.
Haha, I hadn't noticed that. But that's actually an easy slip up to mess up the word "bit" into...that word. Ha ha. Also, I think it's like when someone tries to say "don't think of a pink elephant, don't think of a pink elephant", then you definitely end up thinking of a pink elephant. So I think with him being filmed for a TV show, especially a show like this where it was all one take and he couldn't make any corrections or change anything, in the back of his mind he was probably thinking to himself "Don't slip up and say a bad word, don't slip up and say a bad word", and then it made it even harder for that not to happen, haha. I bet he never slipped a word when he wasn't on camera, only then when the mind gets a little nervous and backfires, haha.
God I wish these had better audio quality...god PBS step up your game. Just to hear him you have to turn it up...then go deaf when the damn ad comes on blaring.
The worst he ever looked,physically on camera . Almost certainly, by then, the doctors told him about his terminal illness. He was such a great person and artist . His soothing voice and philosophies on life will continue to benefit all future generations, which is a true gift to humankind.
