    A greatly admired English rugby legend. Still playing, although at the later end of an amazing career. He is famed for getting quickly up from the defensive line and hitting the No.10.- as demonstrated. Also a good line-out jumper.
    I reckon that most of these guys have still got 'bells ringing' in their heads today.

    Excellent technique and all his “late “ tackles are just being committed to the hit. Very clean player and great athleticism. Puts fear into the main play maker in the opposite team, which is part of his job

    Lawes is a technically correct tackler. His timing is very good. Even if he is slightly late to effect the play he puts doubt in the 10's mind. Next time he sees Lawes in his eye line he will rush the play. It used to be something I had to do as a back row

    Was that a penalty?
    I don't believe so. A little more rotation and it would be.
    Lifting isn't illegal. Lifting the hips above the head so that the head/neck hits the ground first is what's bad.
    There is nothing wrong with hitting hard. His technique is excellent. Nothing 'cheap' about his tackling.

      If you lift a player off the ground, the law states you must bring the player back down safely. Not on their head or neck as that is an instant RED card !

    • @icarus877
      @icarus877 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking at it today, when asked if it 'was' a penalty yes it is. In the year of offence I am sure it would definitely have been a yellow card or certainly should have been.

    • @rittherugger160
      @rittherugger160 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@icarus877 Why would it have been a penalty?
      At no time were the hips above the shoulders. It was close but what made it close was the ball carrier reaching for the ground.
      Play it in slow motion. The hips are never above the head.

    Rugby Union is the oldest from of rugby but in the early part of the 20th century players demanded compensation if they got injured playing so they could feed their families while off work as the game was for amateurs players didn’t get payed

    Lawes is an excellent player with ball in hand as well. Just so that you know where we are in the rugby union season. The club game is all but done for the summer. The Great British and Irish Lions play Japan at Twickenham London on Saturday prior to setting of for a tour of South Africa the current world champs. The other nations have a series of matches including England v USa at Twickenham on 4 July. The club season gets under way in August and there will be autumn internationals. The biggest annual international tournament is generally considered the Six Nations involving Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland (all Ireland not just theRepublic) France and Italy. They play home and away alternate years. For instance Scotland p[ayed England in London this year and host England at Murrayfield, Edinburgh on the First Saturday of February 2022. the first week of that years tournament which ends on the third Saturday of March. These are age old rivalries with great battles but great friendships created among the rival fans who enjoy nothing more that ending the day win or lose with a few pints and a good old sing song in the local club bars or city centre pubs. It is great fun

    He is a big, athletic lad. Unfortunately for the opposition he reads the game well and has immaculate timing. That is why his tackles are like car crashes. However rugby players are tough and you will see some of them get up and run to the next collision even after meeting Mr Lawes.

    @Twopennysau 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Was it legal? There is a little more latitude in union than league around ‘spear tackles’. In league once a tackled player is lifted beyond the horizontal it’s an automatic penalty. In union it’s more about the landing. So the tackle you enquired about was totally legal. Some of his late shots were borderline illegal- though to be fair, they always look worse in slo no.

    • @rorykeegan1895

      Ask the flyhalves if Lawes in their eye-line affects their ability to play 100%. If he does negatively impact their playmaking ability, he is doing a job that very few 2nd rowers can.

      @BlackClawDoom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Zavala1 love that he has openly admitted that he will hunt down a 10 and hit then hard as he can, such a great psychological tactic, because once Lawes has hit that 10 once or twice they are weary of him, and it seriously does effect there ability to run the game because they are constantly keeping half an eye out for him.

    • @linalmeemow
      @linalmeemow ปีที่แล้ว

      "Borderline late hits". Borderline. That's the key word in that sentence. Top players constantly work on the borderline. Lawes very rarely gets penalised for late tackles, that's what makes him so effective.

    • @fabulousaardvark4776

      Nope. Spear tackling is what Umaga (NZ) did to Brian O'Drisoll ( British Lions) when he deliberately spiked him on his head 41 seconds into the first test in 2005, putting him out of the Test series. None of these tackles were penalised and Lawes has played ,and beaten, both Springbok and All Black sides in a long England career.
