- Flux can be expensive, so why don't you just do it yourself? Rosin, an empty bottle and 99,9% alcohol is all you need (and some acid if you want activated flux).

I received 5 oz of pine rosin finely powdered I bought on e-bay. So following on the reply to my question, I mixed up a trial batch consisting of 20 gm rosin powder, 0.40 gm (0.2%) citric acid, 0.2 gm glycerin, 20 gm 95% isopropanol and one drop of Joy dishwashing detergent (nonionic surfactant). With intermittent swirling, the power appears to have fully dissolved in a couple of hours at ambient temperature. In initial trials using old stranded copper wire it appears to work just as well as the MG Chemicals liquid rosin flux I had been using. To dispense it, I am using a one ounce plastic bottle with a needle in it (sold as a glue dispenser for hobby applications). That allows me to put the liquid flux right where I want it and not have a brush to clean up every time I use it. I'll report back if I have any issue, and thanks again for the information on how to do it!
@John Doe Not sure.... citric acid is a weak acid, but I don't know about the need for clean-up

good idea i vape and got my own VG , just made a flux 100ml bottle well i think i did lol so a odd drop will do it?

When you use citric acid to improve activation, about how much would you add?
Thats pretty hard to tell. Since you don't want to eat away your traces you should be very carefull not to overdo it. I personally used only a small amount, like.... hmm... the tip of a knife?

What % of alcohol and rosin did you use? 50% + 50% ?

I didn't weight it to get exact measurments. I just stuffed as much rosin chunks into the flask as I could fit in there and topped it with alcohol. This could very well be even more than 50% rosin. Just try to stuff as much in there as possible.
Gum rosin makes better flux paste making but add mix what is solvent camical please 🙏 explain name please 🙏 😀
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
It works with Ethanol too.
Use high purity 99%+
Much better to use naphthalene acetic acid, (NAA), because although is very good at dissolving any oxidation, the residue is not corrosive.

Unfortunately, it's purity is only 90%.
The lab grade stuff is way, way expensive.
But this works really well for me.
I am considering looking at ways of increasing its purity.

Since it's a crystalline powder that's water soluble, I reckon it would be relatively easy to purify it using the recrystallization method.

I've heard heating the mixture or partial mixture will cause it to gel. Danger is though this mixture it bad if it catches fire. Any other ideas on 'gelling' the mixture

My hearing is a bit bad, could you please write the ingredients for all 3 types, fully activated, mildly activated and inactivated flux? If there are proportional amounts could you give those to me as well. Example To make inactivated flux: Fill bottle with rosin, top off with 99.9% ISO alcohol and shake, put away in warm place and shake bottle daily for 2 weeks until rosin is fully dissolved, if alcohol is evaporated refill bottle with alcohol.

That is basically all you need for standard rosin flux :) To activate it just add some acid. Many people use aspirin to get the salicylic acid, but there are also many additives and filler materials in those tablets, so I don't personally like that. I prefer to use citric acid, which is easily obtained as cleaner for coffee machines. Just add a bit of that, more or less "to taste", and you have your activated flux done in no time :) How strong the activation is is dependent on the type of acid you use and how much you dissolve in the rosin flux.
