Its already had 2.4 million concurrent players on steam and 10 million+ sales overall. And Xbox version hasn't even came yet. Even if everything stopped right now it's already a massive success. No one cares about fake western woke controversy and if anything they bought and played the game just to push back against such nonsense.
It now holds the all time record on Steam for most simultaneous players. Over 1.4 million people saw through the "controversy" and are enjoying this much loved aspect of Chinese culture.

I’m actually glad this game has no Wokeness in it! It’s just a simple game that tells a fantastic story about Chinese mythology while keeping it in a relatively linear narrative. It’s honestly a breath of fresh air.
SCMP : "There have been many critics on the developping company on Weibo due to their stance on gender topics" Interviewee : "Yes indeed there have been critics on X/Twitter due to people's americanised perception of what a game standard should be" Isn't it a bit weird that the interviewee talks about something quite different from what the SCMP talks about? The interviewee make it sounds like the critics come from a "cultural shock" between the West & China whereas most critics seemed to have been made on Weibo.
Why does Sun Wukong need to be diverse 😂? There’s nothing wrong with the Journey to the West’s setting. My Korean father used to binge watch those old Chinese shows about Wukong, is he controversial as well for enjoying them? I thought they were cheesy now and then but nothing was ‘controversial’ about them.
I think people are missing the point on why this is a problem. Yes, the game is fun. Yes, its well made. And yes, if the devs are this sexist, this misogynistic, giving them an even larger voice can potentially put women at danger. Just look at Blizzard and its own controversy. Eastern countries are especially misogynistic. Let's not ignore this. Principally when it can put women at risk.
The protagonist is a stone monkey who has no gender and can transform into 72 different forms: male, female, animal, plant, or even inorganic matter (stone). It is ridiculous to say that Sun Wukong is not diverse.
The reason for the game being criticised has nothing to do with so-called "diversity in culture". It dated back to 2020 when the developers constantly posted offensive and sexist contents. And the fanbase of this game blatantly insulted female gamers, claiming that the game "doesn't need female players". It went viral in incel communities and supporters of this game are currently posting memes to mock female players and women as a whole on Chinese social media. It stirred huge controversy that some women are cancelling their Luckin Coffee membership because Luckin conducted a joint campaign with this game.

Yep, DEI consultation is only interested with "Blackmail Wukong"
I'm not sure that's the case. The game was controversial on Weibo much more than it was discussed on X. I hope this helps!
Controversy never stopped the record breaking numbers of concurrent players on Steam. Other AAA western games with big budget marketing and DEI fared way worse (eg. Concord, Suicide Squad). Don't you think that is funny? Ultimately, customers vote with their wallets despite the repeated attempts to blacklist this game that does not embrace DEI.
Just like Wukong, he understands why the powers to be are making life difficult for him but what he doesn't accept is that they also wanted to destroy his family as well. I find that ironic because western game developers are the ones losing their jobs when their DEI injected games fail due to poor gamer reception while the DEI supporters are still trying to drag Black Myth Wukong through the mud.
@@GermanEnigma ...what do you think DEI is? This is about a misogynistic game dev from China.

Writing about games requires engaging with the politics of games - which have always existed. Hope this helps!

This game was already a massive success when it came out 6 days ago on the first day.
So what's this 'whether it will be successful will depend on blah blah' when it's already a massive success and one of the all time highest selling single player games and it hasn't even been a week? Its already had 2.4 million concurrent players on steam and 10 million+ sales overall. And Xbox version hasn't even came yet. Even if everything stopped right now it's already a massive success.
No one cares about fake western woke controversy and if anything they bought and played the game just to push back against such nonsense.
Lack of diversity?! You don‘t have to sell it to me, i already bought it?
It now holds the all time record on Steam for most simultaneous players. Over 1.4 million people saw through the "controversy" and are enjoying this much loved aspect of Chinese culture.
Would the game be more accepted by critics if Wukong was non-binary?
The only controversy should be about how poorly max settings with ray tracing runs on everything less than a 4090.

Screenrant gave it a lower rating for "lacking inclusive and diversity" and women?
Wow the amount of dirt they will dig up just to dissuade us gamers from us buying this game. The game just became the biggest release on steam history surpassing every other title in history. This is new levels.
There were historical facts supporting this fiction. Emperor did send a small group of officials to acquire buddhism scriptures. They actually travelled west to Afghanistan and ultimately to India. The "monkey king" person who joined the group was a quite capable mighty person of non-Chinese uncivilized "Hu-person 胡人". He was key for the group's success in this long treacherous journey.

AAA means premium and quality?
(Laughs at Skull and Bones, Destiny 2, Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk and see more)
Cyberpunk is a great game. Shouldnt just beeing shipped to outdated consoles who cant run next gen titles. Skull and bones is quadrouple A so its waaay over AAA ofc.
And I guess they're ignoring all the $100M+ mobile games that China's been pumping out for years? Genshin made a pretty big splash on PC + console, never heard anyone say that was "the first Chinese AAA". We'll see how the game does over the next 6-12mos, that's really the proof.
This is on South China Morning Post? Wow.
PC is the name of the game in everything these days in the West. Wukong is a gender neutral character. Does that help?
Nope, the 'activist' journalist and critics will still find something to moan... They forget that they are not the target players of the game
I’m actually glad this game has no Wokeness in it! It’s just a simple game that tells a fantastic story about Chinese mythology while keeping it in a relatively linear narrative. It’s honestly a breath of fresh air.
Wukong should be a black woman and Sanzhang should be an independent and strong minority woman, like Rachel Zegler
It's already a huge success on steam. It's the 2nd most played concurrently game of all time

Interviewee : "Yes indeed there have been critics on X/Twitter due to people's americanised perception of what a game standard should be"
Isn't it a bit weird that the interviewee talks about something quite different from what the SCMP talks about?
The interviewee make it sounds like the critics come from a "cultural shock" between the West & China whereas most critics seemed to have been made on Weibo.
They didn't say there were many critics on Weibo. They said the hashtag had trended and people had read the content. That's not the same.

So as Hawaii.
End wokeism
