As a Vietnamese, I listened to this song throughout my youth, every summer with the Journey to the West TV show. When I first heard it in the trailer, I pre-ordered the game instantly. Thank you, Game Science, for bringing back my childhood memories
The same in China, I am 45 year old. There is only one TV sets in that year, when this music comes, all the children from neighbor brought their chairs and sat together in front of the TV set.
The original composer is Mr. Xu Jingqing, who created most of the music of Journey to the West in 1986, and has been waiting 30 years for crowdfunding to start a Journey to the West theme concert, now he is 82 years old, when he saw his music appeared in the Black myth WuKong is very excited, the old music is rejuvenated in the new field, he said that the game screen is beautiful, the fight scenes are fantastic, He even said he wanted to play hahaha, there are so many foreign friends like his music, I think he'd be very happy about that。
my god. I’m Chinese and, this hit hard!! This is the theme to 80s TV drama Journey to the West. This is literally a part of our childhood. There were some electronic music elements in the original 80s track ( like the one in the beginning) making it a very trendy and a bit controversial music back in 80s china. Back then the genre was still very new to the market
After removing the electronic music elements, this version in the game is better than the original. Of course, the quality of today's orchestration is also much improved.
China has so much great everything to offer, the world needs to know! China needs to produce more iconic products like this to deliver its great culture and history!!! It's a shame that most westerners got to know China only through toxic and super biased western media.

With tears streaming down my face... it's no longer Captain America facing Thanos' army before me... but the childhood superhero, holding the most powerful staff in the world, wearing the brightest golden armor, standing on the most beautiful cloud in the world. In front of him are countless heavenly soldiers and generals, but he just sneers with disdain. With one strike of his staff, he shatters all injustices and evil between heaven and earth, and with one kick, he breaks all the shackles and constraints of the human world... I finally realize that this demon monkey is the hero I've always wanted.

Wukong is definitely *GAME OF THE YEAR* 📖 in my book. I'm so infatuated with the ancient Chinese culture and aesthetics. It's art! This game is truly an art! Also quite challenging. It's a magnificent blend which has been getting distant for the past 5-10 years. This brings back memories of the old "God of War", "Devil may Cry", "Prince of Persia", "Spyro" and many more. It's magical and grand! ✨

My parents bought the entire 1986 TV show dvd set in the early 2000s, and as a child growing up in that time, we had this tiny dvd (or cd idk) player that we would watch for every single road trip. My parents loved watching it with me as it brought them back to China and it defined so much of my childhood. Even as an American, this song was heard probably a thousand times over my life. To have a game that brings this series so much respect is so fun.
Not only about the music, but also the animation. Game science really just activated every neuron of every Asian who had watched the 1986 Journey to the west show. Even i, teared right away i heard the music, which i didn't even know. It reminds me of the summer when i was just the little boy, go home from school and sit right in front of TV to wait for the show. Damn, what a time to be alive, most kids these day can't understand how precious this moment can be.
The hinting motif starts at 1:53. When I first heard this motif and knowing they are going to using this piece in the game I immediately had goosebumps.
This music is exactly from the 1986 TV series "Journey to the West," a cherished memory from our childhood. Wukong's Chinese voiceover is still performed by the same voice actor from back then, bringing back all those nostalgic feelings!!
Hey Marco,The composer of this song saw your review video and was very happy that the music he composed 40 years ago is now appreciated by friends in the West. He really likes how immersed you are when listening to the song, and he's truly delighted. Would you be able to review the earliest version of this song? It’s one of the oldest electronic music pieces in China.😊
Man I’m unable to stop watching/listening to this. What a great review, bit by bit, of a beautiful piece of creativity that originated deep, deep, from an ancient culture that is now catching up. It made me nearly drown in my own tears.
This song alone makes the whole game invaluable. You might've heard this a lot, but JJTW 1986 is literally engraved into our souls, from my grandma, born in 1952, to me, a gen Z. It's her childhood, my mother's childhood, and mine, and we're not even Chinese, just Asians from a neighboring country. i can remember it was on almost every regional and national channels in summer back in the day. Some people say this game is mid, "a reskined dark souls", "only Asians can relate", that it heavily relies on nostalgia, overrated, and overly hyped. I'd say if your game OST can immediately resonate with millions and make them all feel nostalgic upon hearing, you're welcome to do it.
I probably watched the 1986 show more than 20 times. Back when we were kids, we only have broadcast TV and they always showed this series every summer for kids. We grew up with this, literally. Love from Vietnam
This is the opening theme of your favourite TV show as a kid that you sit and watch through the entire thing every chance you get because you know the shows going to start right after, which is why "everyone" knows it. No less Iconic than say the House opening theme, or Kim Possible or Fairly Odd Parents/Sponsebob.
If you don't know, in Vietnam every summer when I was a child we would gather together to watch the 1986 version of Journey to the West and the movie stayed with me for 13 years so I understand that European countries don't know anything about the plot. That's right. We play this game not only because of the beautiful fighting scenes, but also because it evokes part of our childhood memories. This song made my cry 😢❤❤
I become tearful when listen to this theme music! The theme is the same as what I heard from the TV series The Journey to the West - which was produced in 1986! So proud to see the game producer is so confident to use the original (and very old) theme music! Thank you for your appreciation to it. ❤
Thank you China for your wonderful ancestral culture and history and giving us this great game, from the design of the characters to the sound work, Greetings from South America .
Thank you for sharing this reaction video. This music is deep in my memory. The tv show JTtW replays every vacation since I was a little kid. Now I am 33 years old, everytime hearing this remix version I get goosebumps.
Not only is this game incredible quality but it's also China's first AAA flagship game, and a truly culturally significant one at that. It's amazing to see how many people have become fascinated with the lore and story of "Journey to the West". It really is one of the greatest literature classics in human history. It deserves the 10 million copies sold ❤❤
Came back here again from the composer's reaction to this video on Bilibili. Mr Jingqing Xu is pleasantly surprised, seeing you singing along makes him so happy. This is so wonderful 🥹
Watching this TV show was the happiest part of my childhood. I can still remember, every time this theme song was played on TV, all kids were running back home to watch. And 40 minutes later, everybody came back to the playground with a long Stick in the hand.
Man, my childhood just floods back when that music starts playing. The song originally comes from a TV series from 1986, and so many channels would replay it every the summer break for kids. It’s like how Friends reruns on TV in the US-whenever it’s on, you just have to stop and watch a bit.
Everytime I heard this song played from the tv, I know summer holiday is coming, the TV series “Journal to the west” has been popular for decades. I've been listening to this music since I was a kid.
I remember listening to this song for the first time around 1986/early 90's in Indonesia. I watch the series every week with excitement, because I wanted to see WuKong & friends defeated demons 😊
@@治强 can you believe that I wished for them to show us all 81 challenges that they'd have to pass? I remember I was somewhat unsatisfied while I documented every encounter when I was 10, and found out there were not even close to that number. Still, I genuinely felt happy for them, mostly fictional characters, because after all that time, all that hardship, they completed their journey.
This piece of music is embedded into the DNA of every single Chinese brought up in the greater China region. I don’t think there’s even exception. Listening to this brought me back to 30 plus years ago when the drama of journey to the west was replayed during my school holidays season.

Thanks for this..all my memories from my childhood with this book and the music just all flushed back! Cried to the end of the song for no reason! Thanks again for this video from your artist point of view.
I used to dismiss this piece because it was so familiar. Today, through the eyes and ears of foreigners, I realized that I had grown up in the classics without knowing it.
Thank you so much for this video and I love the interpretation! Also great thanks to the developers of this game for breathing a second life to this classic piece of Chinese myth and making to known to more part of the world! As a Chinese myself, I am very happy and surprised to see that people from other Asian countries also have such fond memories of the 1986 version of Journey to the West. This TV show (together with TV adaptation of other 3 classic Chinese literature, came out around the same time) was really an irreplaceable part of my childhood. Listening to the music literarily fills my eyes with tears!
You know, this really brings me back to my childhood. During the summer break, I watched the shows thousands of times. The Devs must also be my age and I can feel their passion in creating the game. Well done bro
This song was used as the opening theme for the 1986 Journey to the West TV show. To this day, CCTV channel 8 still airs the show from beginning to end every summer. As a result, most of us grew up watching this show and listening to this song. When I heard it in the game for the first time, it hit me so hard that I almost cried.
That old sounds that I first heard in ~1996 when the legendary was just released. It was a beyond excited hit back in the day in Vietnam. I have never gone to nor lived in China before but wow, it was something in Vietnam.
Starting at 2:12, it is a melody that has been shared by all Chinese people (including many East and Southeast Asians) for 40 years. It contains the heavenly palace, the dragon palace, the hell, gods, Buddhas, monsters, as well as the suffering, struggle, persistence and success of a group of mortals.
I live in Vietnam, I remembered when I was a little kid, I asked my parents for the Wukong mask and his signature staff so I can dress up as Wukong for the Mid-Autumn festival (it’s a traditional Chinese fes), I was so happy when I first got it! I hit the street, then I found out, apparently every kid in the neighborhood…also dressed up as Wukong 😂 Wukong will forever be iconic as for us Vietnamese!
Im so happy that BM:Wukong did so well. In a short interview GameScience said that "Black Myth" was meant to be a series title if the game did well. I really hope we get more retellings of other Chinese mythology/events. I love Romance of the Three Kingdoms and i would do unholy things to get a "Black Myth: Guan Yu" or something.
I loved the part where Wu Kong went to Hell to strike off the death dates of his fellow monkeys so that they live forever too. He was literally forced to leave his family and friends behind to collect the script.
This is like going back to the good old days when I was sitting in front of an old TV watching Journey to the west with my grandpa. Now I'm playing black myth Wukong with my sons and when the main theme starts I just couldn't hold back tears anymore.🥲🥲
It hit really hard when 2:12 begins. all sort emotion is coming to play, start with excitement, sadness, nostalgic, memory lane, happiness and now eagerness to watch the series again and play the game.

It reminds me of the summer when i was just the little boy, go home from school and sit right in front of TV to wait for the show. Damn, what a time to be alive, most kids these day can't understand how precious this moment can be.

Whoa! We appreciate you alerting us to this musical selection. I've been playing it multiple times because I'm really enjoying it.
2:40 When Nostalgic starts...
For me it started at 2:13
The hinting motif starts at 1:53. When I first heard this motif and knowing they are going to using this piece in the game I immediately had goosebumps.
Totally hit right on my feelings right now.

So refreshing to hear your perspective on Wukong from a music standpoint. Your analysis is so interesting
This music is exactly from the 1986 TV series "Journey to the West," a cherished memory from our childhood. Wukong's Chinese voiceover is still performed by the same voice actor from back then, bringing back all those nostalgic feelings!!
I don't think the CN VA for WuKong is the same though. His VA in BMW is Lin Qiang who's born in 1982.
@@susanwqz I was wondering because the Chinese VA does a great job at imitating the 1986 actor, especially when he laughs!
☝👏
Hear the music, I have tears in my eyes. It is my childhood memory, when I saw the TV show “Xi You Ji”.
Man I’m unable to stop watching/listening to this. What a great review, bit by bit, of a beautiful piece of creativity that originated deep, deep, from an ancient culture that is now catching up.
It made me nearly drown in my own tears.
Call on all apes, Let’s raise!
Well said.
I probably watched the 1986 show more than 20 times. Back when we were kids, we only have broadcast TV and they always showed this series every summer for kids. We grew up with this, literally. Love from Vietnam
I can never go back to my childhood when I listened to this bgm. This song made me cry again.😭
The series were broadcasted every summer and winter (till now). Many Chinese people can recite very scenes by heart.
I'm smiling like the kid I was in 1986 but this time with tears...
😭😭😭
A Chinese classical heroic symphony music based on the original novel, originally from the TV series of the same story in 1986.

Now I am 33 years old, everytime hearing this remix version I get goosebumps.
tearing listening to this. living in america for most of my adult life. but this was my childhood memory and forever cherish it
goddamn, even after 20 years, I still get goosebumps everytime I hear this music
😭
Watching this TV show was the happiest part of my childhood. I can still remember, every time this theme song was played on TV, all kids were running back home to watch. And 40 minutes later, everybody came back to the playground with a long Stick in the hand.
so beautiful and nostalgic. Brings tears to my eyes. The electronic toms are actually the times Wukong did cloud somersaults in the video.
Great symphony. It's definitely a memory of my youth. I heard the familiar climax of the familiar music, and my skin gave goosebumps.

Oh man the melody takes me back to when i was a kid watching the original Journey to the West series
I'm 59 ... this 1986 Journey To The West tv series brings back memories of my parents and me glued to the tv.

ah the nostalgia hit hard with this one the melody is just so iconic
This piece of music is embedded into the DNA of every single Chinese brought up in the greater China region. I don’t think there’s even exception. Listening to this brought me back to 30 plus years ago when the drama of journey to the west was replayed during my school holidays season.

when i listen to it it brings back my childhood feeling on hot summer days watching Journey to the West over and over again

The music of this game is so good. It's not overstating itself most of the time, but when it hits, damn.
Most of it is very subtle and for sure
2:58 That suprano singing hits me the hardest! Nostalgia and made me cry
Gets me the goosebumps at 2:00 marks that intro music.

Oh God! My goosebumps! All memories come back since childhood.😭
This is not a game, IT IS A PIECE OF MASTER ART!! WELL DONE CHINA!
Man, I was like 4 or 5 when I watched the og show and this theme is just lodged in my memory, where's the synth laser sounds?! Nostalgia x 10
There are some traditional Chinese instruments in there as well: such as ‘guzheng 古筝‘, ‘pipa 琵琶’, and ‘gongs and drums 锣鼓‘ 😊
Great combination of different musical instruments, which is why the soundtrack sounds so great! I just loved it!
traditional,
鑼 brass pan and
鼓 drums ,
are two series of instruments
I join you in hoping and wish game science all the BEST!!!❤❤❤
I heard some rumors about a DLC for Black myth wukong. Since in the hidden ending Sun wukong is free from the headband.
The music originally from the 1986 TV series. They made some adaption. So you can hear the synth sound from 70s and 80s.
I cryied the nostalgia hit me
Thanks for picking this out. I didn't expect to hear this in Wukong🤩
Thanks for helping us appreciate the wonderful music!
As '90s generation in Vietnam, grew with that rhythm during our childhood man. I have got goosebumps!!!!
2:25 diudiudiu is soul of this theme🥰
LMAOOOO I understand completely
This is so true

Tears burst in my eyes. Wukong is definitely THE HERO of every asian kid!
I loved the part where Wu Kong went to Hell to strike off the death dates of his fellow monkeys so that they live forever too. He was literally forced to leave his family and friends behind to collect the script.
