You are so right! The first time I watched this, I didn't know if I should laugh or scream. Thank you for watching! The rest of the movie is hilarious. Unfortunately, I don't believe the entire movie is on TH-cam, but a lot of other Harold Lloyd movies are. I love his silent films as well. When I first started watching his movies, I didn't know he even had talkies. Once I heard his voice, though, I got addicted. His delivery of lines is so comical!
Really? Must bring back memories! That's cool that you watched it in your teens. I'm 27 and I only "discovered" Harold Lloyd a year ago. I love this move. It's really quite frightening, this scene, and quite amazing that he took such risks in filming it.
Great stuff! Brings back memories watching this and the silent stuff around 30 years ago..The BBC used to show Harold Lloyd compilation clips back in the day! Me and my brother as young kids used to laugh out loud and love Harold Lloyd. Anybody remembers the song.." Harold Lloyd a pair of glasses and a smile!!?"
Yeah, I remember those back in the early 80s, there was a narrator at the start of each clip making comments, "poor Harold is down on his luck and his convinced things are going to get better, but BOY is he wrong"
Yes, it is true. Amazingly enough, this scene is a genuine stunt. Check out what Wikipedia says: "The 'hanging outside of the skyscraper' sequence used techniques similar to those on Lloyd's most famous film, the silent Safety Last! (1923). Contrary to some Hollywood lore, this scene did not utilize special effects or back projection..."
(Cont.) "Before the scene in the 1962 compilation film Harold Lloyd's World of Comedy (produced by Harold Lloyd himself), a title card reads: This sequence was made without trick photography and before process was perfected. The action - at all times - actually occurred as high up as you see it happen."
I think that the background was enlarged and that he was about 3 or 4 feet off the ground, otherwise, give me a break! very good that studios had this kind of setups at that time it was credible as real? Maybe.
I think the last time I watched this was almost 40 years ago. The day before yesterday I showed my 6 year old daughter some Chaplin stuff. She loved it. Then I remembered that when I was a kid I used to like this Harold Lloyd guy, so I did a search and found The Safety Last. We had such fun together watching it. She's asleep now, as I'm watching these. I am literally crying tears trying to suppress my laughter. This is funnier than I remembered. And I can see the resemblance in the extremely funny Frank Drebin's concrete dildo scene. :)
He lost some fingers on one of this hands early in his career so he designed and made the prostetic glove he made to make it look like a real hand so he is wearing in this and all his movies. Notice how he looks like Stephen Colbert the Late Night show! JanieMartinSings
Actually, I watched a documentary on Harold Lloyd and the making of "Safety Last" and "Feet First." I wish I could remember more about it. I've been trying to find it, but have been unsuccessful so far. I do remember that there were some precautions taken, like a mattress underneath him. But the safety measures were not great. Let's just say, you wouldn't catch me filming something like that at actual height, fake front and mattress notwithstanding. :)
Only back then did people know how to make you cringe with suspense and at the same time make you laugh out loud. :D This is an awesome clip! Makes me want to watch the rest of the movie! Do they have it YT, by any chance? Thanks for posting this! :)
I think the answer is in between the lines. When referring to "special effects" or ''trick photography', I think they are talking about the use of screens & post-production techniques etc. I don't believe Harold Lloyd actually dangled outside the building itself, although factually-sepaking, he was indeed "as high up" as we see him.. on a fake front. If I remember correctly, he was prevented from doing the high-risk stuff by the insurers. That was done by The Human Fly - & only in long shots.
I know they used fake building fronts with a short drop mounted on top of actual tall buildings & filmed from a cute angle, but I'm not sure they used such camera tricks on all these "thrill" flics; is it true that on some films Harold was actually climbing the building front itself all those storeys up?
i find the stunt very good but the sequence of events while hanging isnt realistic. people from down the street may have notice a man is hanging on the building or flatform especially waterhose segment. its just a performance.
It's very nice to know that silent comedy lovers are still there, I am guessing even you are a silent era lover and I would love your opinions on my videos too
The gantry going up and down. Really, those two up there on the roof couldn't decide which way they were going? Couldn't they feel the difference in weight? I guess those bars are a precaution against anyone falling out of the window. Interesting as today's glass building windows won't open or if anything no more than a crack. Guess they've had a few jumpers.
Poor Harold lol... Superb!
Also the infamous Cecil Hotel in the background, there is a documentary on Netflix about it.
Scared me as a kid 40 years ago and terrifies me even more today!!
Hearty loving laugh 😂! Thanks to the actor and director. Unique comedy shown in a miserable World.

Гениально. Просто устанавливаешь декорации на крыше небоскреба и снимаешь под нужным углом. И никакого монтажа!!! Супер!!! 👍👍👍
Но выглядит офигеть как реалистично! Мне даже за актера страшно стало )
7:08 Wow! The Hotel Cecil is in the background - now its a part of LA's "famed" skid row district and the site of many mysterious deaths!
Dieser Film ist so phantastisch, hab sowas von herrlich gelacht. 🤣🤣🤣🤣Ist schon über 20 Jahre her, als ich ihn sah. 😏

90 years ago and still as scary as hell.
Harold sure got into a fix but did he ever get out of one!!
Nerve wracking. Fantastic
Harold was amazing way ahead of his time. ...
Thanks for posting this one! I was searching for the "monkey scene" for so long! I watched this movie when I was about 14 years old, now I'm 26.

The scene at 8:21 is clearly invokes some kind of projection.
I'm not buying it. No way this dude would have made it
@@chrisbailey8908buy it. He made it.
Gives me the jitters to watch it. Great stuff.

Watching Lloyd, and Keaton make my day. So talented. D🌞☯️
awesome scene at last time.
This is so insane wow....
Brilliant. The stunts made me feel queasy!

Legend.
I was a young man this when this film first came out. Still scares me even today.
Paul I understand exactly what you are talking about. ...breath taking for sure. ...
Почему сейчас так не могут,трюки студийные,а сердце в пятках
Смотрела, а сердце в пятке....ох и страшно.

I remember reading that he was born without a thumb on one hand, he used a glove that had a fake thumb built into it
In fact, he lost it during a commercial photo shooting, when he held a bomb he thought to be a prop and he lit it with a cigarette.
wonderful
I don’t get it! Why is this a talking motion picture instead a silent film?!
