Evidence of Stripe Colors & Where I Goofed | Engels Coach Shop

  • There are benefits of technology, but sometimes it's out of place on a 130 year old manure spreader. Handcrafted sign painting still fits the era on this Great Western Manure Spreader. I goofed on part of the sign, but was able to fix it on the second side. Hopefully it's not too obvious, until I point it out. It's too late now though. Thanks for coming along.

    Good Evening Dave & Diane, lettering looks very nice. My father who was born in 1927 and was an electrical engineer for Kodak in London later in life, surprised me by Pin stripeing in gold paint my 1954 Black Triumph Thunderbird back in the 80's when I was 17, I found out in his youth he was a pin striper for a motorbike company? Before changing his career. Who would have thought🙂. Hoe your all OK. Regards Richard 🇬🇧

    Typography is more artistic than mechanical. When I first started doing digital designs I started to learn about it and I now have a small library of books and thousands of fonts on my workstation to find the "best" font to go with the rest of the images I create. You are doing fantastic and only about a dozen people will ever notice the slight differences. It is the same with my designs. Only i will feel what the "best" font adds to the image. Others will just like what I made. You are making a wonderful art object that invokes a definite point in time.

    • @MrKotBonifacy
      @MrKotBonifacy 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      _"and only about a dozen people will ever notice the slight differences"_ - one here; used to design such things - from lettering on trucks to businesses' signboards, to tombstones. Automatic kerning is almost NEVER right, even more so with individual "standalone" words like here - and some letter pairs (or groups, like here) are just impossible to ever get right. The gaps between I-T-H will be always too big, even if you get these letters to almost touching each other - and you need to spread (pun not intended) S-M-I apart too, for good balance.
      And then "S" in "WESTERN" and "ENDLESS" should be tad taller to look equal in height, but hey, make it real and "period appropriate" - back then it wasn't some typography artist doing this job but some "Joe" with an acute eye and steady hand...
      BTW, back in '90s I happened to watch Indian signboard painters at work - two guys standing on a rickety scaffolding painting freehand all that lettering (both English and Devanagari script) on a white board over an entrance to the shop - and all they used as a prop was a couple of horizontal lines on this board (baselines only), and "voila!".

    The M's thick first line in Manure is a graphic design method of 'anchoring' the line of type. It gives the eye a clear starting point to read left to right. The thin first line M's are larger and 'anchor' their word with their size.

    Dave, you are a true artist in every sense of the word. When I was 14 I worked with my uncle who hand built custom saddles from the "ground up". Like you he was a true craftsman. I learned saddle and harness repair and hand stitching from him. I now look at horse drawn wagons differently now. You are indeed a true inspiration.

    Kerning is one of those things that once you learn you can’t unsee. Typography at its best is invisible, except to the trained eye.
    There’s also the joke word keming: kerning applied excessively so that “rn” begins to look like “m”.

You didn't goof, these photos of the original builds showed the lettering that way and you kept it accordingly. We applaud you for taking the blame but not because you goofed, but for keeping the project according to history and photos of an original built wagon. Maybe the original builder had a long hard night out on Friday Night and finished the right side of the lettering too early on Saturday Morning?? Stay safe and keep up the great work and History you share through your work and videos. Fred.

    As Bob Ross would have said, there are no mistakes in painting. Just happy goofs in your case. I would bet that if we could go back in time and line up a bunch of the spreaders fresh out of the factory you would see variances in the lettering on every spreader. Average people wont even notice them. Those of us with various forms of O.C.D. understand the struggle to accept the minor differences. This spreader is like the beautiful Monarch butterfly. When you stand back and admire the whole picture you see symmetry. But if you zoom in you see asymmetry. Either way, it looks amazing!

    Back in the day before vinyl cutting machines for signage appeared, when I wanted a decal I would buy adhesive material and physically mark out a grid and draw the letters or numbers in reverse on the backing to create what I wanted then cut it out. I quickly learned about how not to make everything the same size. Also the aspect or forced ratios became just as important. For example an O has to be slightly larger and placed equally above and below the letters or numbers next to it, if not it looks smaller and shorter. As you found out, an I for example has to have the letters or numbers on each side of it brought in a bit closer so it does not look "lost" seeming a bit too far visually away from the others. Another thing a lot of people never consider is when putting letters or numbers on a tube. In most cases it is placed offset to where it is mostly viewed from, on bicycle frames for example, nothing is ever placed dead centre.

    Fantastic work, you did a great job with the lettering. A steady hand goes a long way in doing lettering. Thanks for all you do sir!

    I like the lettering and any small imperfections give it a hand made look which is how we would see the way it was back in the day. For example, we all appreciated what a wood carver could create by hand, but these days you can’t always tell if a piece has been carved by hand or was done by machine / or power tools.
