Thank you for this! It's so important to find a responsible breeder and do research ahead of time. Because of Covid, there are currently no cat shows, but when I found a Somali breeder (yes, online), I was able to meet her in person at cat shows and actually see the father of the kitten I eventually brought home in action there! Breeders who go to the trouble and expense of showing their cats are often (not always, but often) more reputable. Summer is my second Somali from her - I actually met Summer at her first cat show when she was four months old, and I continued to show her for a couple of years after I brought her home. I specifically got Summer for her temperament because I wanted a cat I could train to do therapy pet work at hospitals, and that's exactly what we did until Covid. I hope we can pick up again once there's a vaccine.
I know a lot of people think pedigreed cats impact cat rescue adoption, but that's not the case. Approximately 3% of owned cats are pedigreed - a TINY number. The MUCH bigger problem is irresponsible people who don't spay and neuter their cats. And the breeders I know personally aren't making money at this - even though the kittens are expensive, all that money goes into care, feeding, vet visits, spaying or neutering kittens, and traveling to and participating in shows. They all have day jobs, and breeding is a passion and a hobby for them. They do it for the love of the breed.

Hey! Thank you so much for taking time write about all of that. I now wish we covered a little more about the costs that breeders have to cover themselves and the fact that the price you pay for a kitten reflects that, without really making them any profit.
I have pinned your comment to the top as well, I do hope more people will read that too 💗

I do feel like people are too quick to judge, it’s not helpful to demonise all breeders. There are many, who care deeply about improving the health/ temperament of their chosen breed. My future kitten will most likely be a ragdoll, because I love the ragdoll breed. I don’t think anyone should be made to feel bad, about
purchasing a kitten from a reputable breeder. I will definitely use these tips when looking for a ragdoll breeder 👍 😊

So sorry to hear that you got such aggressive and unfair comments! I think you're absolutely right, doing your research and supporting a responsible and ethical breeder promotes better animal welfare overall. People can get so caught up in judging others, and not think through what they are saying, or see the entire picture.

Thank you for this video, very informative. When it comes to finding a breeder it is always good to research reviews and check all of their processes and the right questions to ask. My family made a very bad choice of buying an English cocker spaniel puppy from the first breeder we met because she was breeding for 35+ years. However, our puppy ended up developing an eye disease very early on. Even now as we have finally found a great breeder in NZ we made sure we found numerous breeders and one of them was lying about selling pure Ragdolls and she was registered with the New Zealand NZCF, once I asked her about it she immediately was trying to up sell and convince me that these kittens would be better than pure Ragdolls when the mother was 1/4 Burmese. Be careful future buyers take on the a dive these two have set as well as ask the right questions. Price doesn’t matter when it’s the well-being and growth of the kittens and well as the legitimacy of the breed.
    Thanks Pixie & Bluebell 😇💕

Pixie and Bluebell Aww no worries, would rather share and be helpful for others it is really sad when breeders take advantage of customers to make their own person gain and the cats and buyers suffer as a result. 😓

I got scammed by a non tica "breeder". I put 400$ on two kittens and found out they were half persian and were from two different litters even though I asked for ragdolls and from the same litter. It was sad. I even spoke to lawyers and am currently working on legal actions. It was devastating. But anyways, guys please go with a reputable registered breeder! Save yourself the money and the heartbreak! I was only a week from getting mine :( luckily I found a registered breeder. She's been fantastic and I'm getting two beautiful kittens (a seal mitted boy and a blue bicolor girl) in three weeks! Thanks for posting this video!

I fully support the adoption movement, but insulting breeders is counterproductive, especially considering that most shelter cats are strays or mix breeds initially bought for a low price without paperwork. It’s rare to find a cat from a breeder being surrendered into a shelter because more research is involved in the purchase of them and breeders often take them back themselves if circumstances change. So although buying a cat from a breeder doesn’t help reduce the number of shelter cats, it isn’t really going to add to them either.

I've almost always adopted animals but decided to try a purebred animal for the first time in light of my senior pet not really doing so hot lately. Problem is, I live out in the middle of nowhere in the US. It's been challenging to find reputable breeders within 500 miles of where I live. Quite a few I were hopeful for stated they were registered, but I was unable to find any of their credentials online through official breeder registries. Very disappointing. I managed to find two within 800mi that were breeding lines I was interested in and have been in contact with them...honestly beyond a few simple questions I had on their policies and philosophies around what they've found to be best for their animals and contract clarifications I didn't have much to ask. I could almost feel the breeders' disbelief that I didn't have more to say lol. Most of the basic questions I would have had were answered by their FAQ pages or talking around other breed enthusiast forums.
Does anyone have any examples of pertinent or important questions to try to ask a potential breeder?

I live in Spain, and here don't let you visit the breeder in person, not even to choose your kitten😒. I've called every Ragdoll breeder and the answer was the same. 😡

    • @PinkLemonade1116

Not sure if any registered breeders in Ottawa specifically but there are reputable ones in Ontario. Try Sago Dolls (Toronto), Ohemgee (Windsor), PurrReal Dolls (Brant). Also, if you go on TICA website, you’ll be able to find more breeders within Canada

So if for some reason you have to return your kitten, should the breeder return some/if not all of the cost of the kitten?

I reserved my Birman kitten from a breeder on birman cat club and this website or club is listed on gccf so i think its safe. Sadly can't go see kittens because of covid but they set picture of mum and newborns. Plus 2 earlier pictures of dad when he was younger. They also have their own website, so I'm hoping its all safe. They are quite a while away.. Like 3 hours. But we are going to get her ourselves. I'm lucky that I reserved the last kitten of the litter. 😂 They also do provide kitten packs.

Are cats 1 year old or older avaliable from breeders; not just kittens?

    • @PixieandBluebell
      @PixieandBluebell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Sometimes, yes! Our breeder told us that after a few years of breeding from a cat, they do then give away/ sell them to someone they trust, so that this cat can have a loving and calm home for the rest of their life 💗 It's definitely worth contacting some breeders and express your interest in getting a 'retired' cat. By all means, they are not old cats, they would probably be around 3 years old. Ragdolls live around 15 years so it is still a pretty young age 💗
