      I just used your whatnot $15 credit and got a BU 2013 ASE for SPOT after tax shipping! I'm so excited and it should be here tomorrow because I live in Massachusetts and the seller lives in New Hampshire so he was only 50 or so miles from me! Thank you so much silver picker, I have never gotten an American Silver Eagle for spot!

    I am female. 68 almost. Collected and hoarded for years.
    Grandson has interest. Just sorted and scoped 40 plus wheat pennies. Next, 1959-1983, 30 rolls.
    Found lots of wheat errors. Not interested in saving. Will sell all.
    Still learning. Love the hobby!

    My Dad got every “Silver Proof Coin Set” from 1968-2011 when he died. He was also a ‘Local Patriot’. City, state, region…he had to have it. I’m more of a ‘historian’, carrying on my father’s legacy ❤

    Female, 52 researcher collector mostly - cannot get enough written materials on obsolete coins. Almost spent $250 on an 1864 Two Cent original "book". Really hard to walk away from that one. I love the deep dive into the differences in the old US coins. I am also very much a speculator. I love to buy full albums and pour over them to find those varieties worth money. I do go into my LCS with a list of coins I am trying to find to complete albums, but not always. Thanks for the video.

    I'm a #1 hunter all the way. While I enjoy stacking up silver dimes and quarters. I always have pictures on my phone of the ones that I need to complete that set.
    I have been collecting for more than 35 years now and enjoy completing sets. From Peace Dollars, Washington Quarters, Mercury Dimes, and Roosevelt Dimes. I have to complete the set. It's my OCD that takes over some times. Quantity over quality for me. Great topic here for sure.

    Definitely a few types of collector were overlooked, namely these two:
    The Time Traveler: this is a collector who focuses on one era very specifically, and will accumulate as many different coins from that era as they can, devoted entirely to the belief that if they have enough coins, and can fit all of them into their mouth, and close their eyes really tight, they will be transported to that time as a spectator and gain important historical insight. You don't usually want to buy used coins from this type of collector.
    The Jerk: this is a collector who scours world coin bins for coins that are the same mass and size as coins from their home country, but with less face value than their home equivalent. Then this collector will use these coins in vending machines to "get a deal" and basically rip-off the person who owns the vending machine. Often this collector likes to make a show out of it, drawing the attention of others, boasting that they are about to buy a Coke for fifteen cents only to produce a handful of coins from thousands of miles away which occasionally jam the machine, leaving the audience completely unimpressed. The worst of these offenders will actually spend more money to create the illusion of spending less, for example spending $8 to get foreign coins with a value of $0.15 to buy a $1 soda.

    • @Silverpicker
      @Silverpicker  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Watch out for the time traveling jerk!

    Let’s see - got into collecting foreigns as a kid because I was fascinated with the different shapes and designs so aesthetic - check. I have walked into coin stores with a list in my locker so hunter - check. Enjoy getting a good deal and knowing that it will go up so speculator - check. Will sometimes pick a lesser value coin with more history so historian check. Though not super fanatic about it, I do like to know enough about the subject to be a smart shopper and to have some cool coin stories to impress my friends so researcher check. Enjoy a modest amount of silver stacking so hoarder check. Ultimately, I am, like most collectors, in the game for multiple reasons.😂 😊

    I am tee totally addicted to coin collecting. Every spare dollar that I get goes to coins. Its an investment and a hobby. Kinda like how people that went through the Great depression saved money after going through the hard times. They save so that they don't go through anything like that again. Well I spent five years sleeping on sidewalks. Now i have a roof over my head but i save like crazy. Who knows maybe my coin collection will buy me a home someday.

    I'm a researcher-speculator-historian- hunter. I'd like to put the author in a category for authors- not a compliment! I think more men are into coin collecting because it is a very old hobby that was predominately men. They wanted to have an activity with their sons and hand down their collections to these sons. I think more women are into coins now. My parents didn't have a son, so I was default. I think roll hunting is a great adventure.

    Love the history, rarity, and yes i speculate a bit also. I to have list of sorts , like you said filling in albums. The one main collection i have is all West point mint coins not commemoratives but w dime, cent, nickels , quarters , halfs, and dollar. Just need the expensive ones like the gold mercury, jfk , and probably some other i can't think of off the top of my head. And Even dapple in paper currency.

    @kikilover_cookies6569 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think if more women would just start doing their researching and discover how fun and adventurous this can be. I wouldn't call myself a collector, it's more of a hobby that started when I started researching some wheat pennies I had found in my change. Most of the info I received on wheat pennies was here on you tube. In my endeavors I learned about the 1982 D pennies and I started collecting 1982 pennies It's kind of like gambling for me. Someday I might find that 1 coin that makes me just a little richer. I share this hobby with my 8 year old grand daughter and we have great fun doing that. It's is funny!!!!

    I remember reading this article I didn't like how they portrayed any of the collectors but I am the speculative historian hoarder, I keep every preMemorial cent, preJeferson nickel, silver, and error coin I get in change in speculation silvers going to go up, the quarter error will go up and the V nickel will go up but I also have sets going as my collection. I am definitely not a perfectionist collector, I like my worn change.

    I think I'm a Hunter/Historian. Like you, I don't have a written list, the open spaces in my albums are my list, and it is really a thrill to fill one of those vacancies. But, I have accumulated many "Junk coins" over the years, and I use the term Junk in a coin collector way, I know they aren't real junk. So, I'll find myself with an old worn V nickel or Indian Head penny in my hand wondering where was the last place this was spent, and what was it spent on, and who spent it, and what were they wearing.... Was it a kid in a candy store, a woman at a 5 and dime? Every coin has a story that we will never know. I often think that would be a great idea for an author. Just hand them an old coin and have them come up with it's history, from the mint, to the album. Maybe even from the coins point of view.

    I live in Spain and only focus on USA coins. I'm thrilled about the varieties/ errors and, of course, pre 1900s coins and key dates. And in general history of USA coins is amazing, how CC mint was established, trade dollar history, that worker were paid with them and they were demonetized, ect...
    What I love to do is to get my microscope, open Variety Vista and just sit and looks for amazing finds. Not to later sell them and that's it, but to find what yet has to be found. Haven't even sent coins to PCGS yet. But to me it's an examination of my knowledge, don't want to be Etsy type of coin collector haha. Education is the main part of this hobby, without it you are just playing around.
    Edit: im not trading / selling a single coin in a collection untill a figure all out. Then mayb, but if im sure that im not missing out on anything.

      @glebhill6397 ปีที่แล้ว

      @joniwestbrook7962 you can easily find this info by yourself. Simply ask the same question to google. Buy before everything - education is the most important. Do you know what are the exact errors you have? Their attribution? Cuz each error either has name to it "Die clash, lamination error, struck through, ect..." If you think you have DDO, do you know how and why DDO / DDR are occurring ? There are exact names and known years when they occurred, and this information is also on the tip of your finger
      If not, then before flooding the sales market with titles like "Error coin," research which exact "error" you have. I also hope you know what die deterioration doubling / mechanical doubling are, very important

    I'm probably all of the above. Is that a bad thing? What I collect is different than what I stack. What I'm searching for isn't always what I end up purchasing. Me, like most, like the good deals. I like to show off my coins and learn as much about the hobby and the coins I'm purchasing, passing that knowledge off to others; I've gotten many interested in the hobby by doing so. Maybe all of this just makes me a know it all "hoarder" who likes to read, but I've learned long ago that who really cares what others think of you It's what you think of yourself. Do what you love. lol

    I'm part hunter & speculator - but those of us who collect circulating foreign coins are often hoarders too. Some of us buy in bulk, take what we need, and sell in bulk.
    My take on why there are fewer ladies - and I base this on when my wife and I go to baseball card shows - she only buys what she likes, and is an anti-speculator. At the end of the day, the men who run booths at shows have to turn a profit or they're not coming back. The pretty things cost more and my wife is priced out.

After a lifetime of checking pocket change, The only Jefferson’s I do not have is a 2023 D. The dimes go back to 1916. Still remember the day daddy found a 1916 D. I have three dimes missing, 2021 D, 2022 D and 2023 D. I didn’t find any errors. What kind of collector am I?

    Just started watching this video.
    Already, I can tell I'm a hoarder/collector.
    I've done some hunting and continue to do so
    As I continue watching, I notice I'm also very much an "asthete"
    Continuing ...
    I look like a hoarder, at least to my wife, but I'm not.
    Self exposer? Definitely not
    Researcher? I don't have the time for that. I do my research, but I'm not anal about it
    Patriot? Definitely not
    I definitely think I'm part historian. I often obsess over Canadian penny history.
    Conclusion: Asthete/Historian

For the past 8 years I work at a grocery store at the service desk so every bill and coin comes through my hands first. So I keep every wheat penny and Indian head penny. I keep all silver. But my favorite is looking for certain error coins. I taught myself everything I know about coins by reading and viewing them. I have people come to me now wondering about a coin they have. 99% of the time I know what they have if I don't I will research and learn myself about it. Customer's and employee's always give me wheat pennies. All money is beautiful. By the way I'm female...lol

    From my experience working at a coin shop, there is a lot of women collecting. They just do not collect the same way as men often do. I usually get women who spent decades collecting circulating coinage they found while shopping/working, they come to the shop for the few pieces mossing but wouldn't have participated in the organised hobby. You are still a collector if you don't participate in the organised side of the hobby and I wouldn't discount them
    There is also a lot of women that actively collect with/throught their SO. Whose collection is it when both spend time searching and aquiring coins?
    I think for the clubs/show, it is mostly because they are seen has predominantly men. I know I do not yet participate to my city's club, because all the members I at the shop are a good 4-7 decades older than me, I guess a similar effect can happen to women.

    Mainly a hunter. Working on a world coin collection. Current goal is 1 coin from every country in the world, of the largest value circulated (no commemoratives), and closest to the founding date of the country. I cheat a little with colonial coins that have the current country's name on it and countries that were founded but became part of another country to be re-founded at another date (for example the Baltic states that were independent in the early 20s, part of the Soviet Union and now independent again).

      I've always thought about doing a 1-coin-from-every-country collection, but I never pulled the trigger. Maybe someday :)

      @@Silverpicker I am about 3-4 coins away from having one from each country, depending on whether I want to include the Sovereign Order of Malta, and one that is really tough N. Korea. I will be working on refining the 2nd and 3rd criteria for the collection.

    I see the imbalance between male and female collectors is that historically, men have been the gender which is the breadwinner, whereas women have been the homemaker. Since women are now part of the workforce they see the value of money and can use part of their earnings to acquire assets. But until women earn the equivalent which men do, which is about 78 percent that men earn, women won't have the disposable income that men do. What I also see is that the majority of men are older, white and politically conservative.
    I see myself as a combination of a 'Classic Hunter' and a 'Speculator'. For my personal collections I have a list of coins I search for to fill spaces in my albums at the best condition I can afford.
    I see myself as a 'Speculator' for wheat cents, Buffalo nickels and current circulating coins of Canada and European countries. I like wheat cents and Buffalo nickels and buy lots, hoping to fill slots in my personal collections. The rest I sell to fellow collectors at our monthly meetings, not to make a profit, but to release some of my hoards to fellow collectors.
    As far as Canadian and European coins I have several hundred dollars of each, should I feel the need to escape from an increasing authoritarian and dictatorial governments at the State level, the increasing fascist control of the US House of Representatives and the attempts by the US Supreme Court to turn the US into a theocracy. If the US would have defaulted on the debt, the dollar would more than likely plummeted in value. I would have some protection against that.

    Women in general don’t tend to collect things like men. In fact, they tend towards jobs and hobbies and interests that focus on people or themselves rather than objects. Yes, that’s a huge generalization but it has a heavy dose of reality.

    She is everything wrong with this industry. Every type of collector is imperative to collecting . Without history every coin is relegated to melt value. Without speculation, values would become stagnant. Simple collect what you love regardless of why and encourage others to do the same

    I love the art of coins. But I have specific goals one of every coin from my birth year and one from every country from the twentieth century.
