Hunting coin rolls is a very cheap way to find cool coins. Buy a box from your local bank (Kennedy Halves are popular for the possible silver) search the rolls. Keep anything you want. Then, return the remainder of the box to the bank. You just got coins for your collection and only paid face value. This year, I bought a few boxes of cents, trying to find the 2023 Extra V variety. I only found 2, but I got them graded. Now those 2 cents that I paid 1 cent apiece for are now valued at $1,500.
I like that you can buy rather nice capped bust half dollars for less than $200. I mean those are coins that are at or approaching 200 years old. There's lots of fun options below that price point
Hey Ben, Another great video with an offering of gorgeous coins for everyone - we need more of these but your staff goes - here come the calls - which is great - Stephanie handled my purchase flawlessly - you have a fantastic staff!!!! Best Wishes and see you at the show.
I'd say if you want very nice historical coins for a lower price, just collect german coins. infinite variety in price and appearance. and dont have them graded, that also cuts down on the price
Agreed, lots of real old German states coins that are surprisingly affordable, I've had some time going through many on eBay and have scored on a semi-worn Prussian 1802 thaler with toning for $30!
Hi Ben. I picked up that 1942 PR63 Red Lincoln and a 1941 PR65 Jefferson. Thanks. I still need the 1941 dime and quarter to complete my 41 proof set. I'll keep an eye on your offerings. *------>* 🦉 🔔
@@johnleeshute Hi john. I just recently completed my 1942 proof set. The Type1 nickel was my completer. I love the 42 set as it contains some cool type coins, with the Type2 nickel being the most unique. I wish you good luck with your set.
Thanks for another great video! Wanted to mention that some really nice (and rare!) colonial coins can be had for under $200. My husband is assembling a collection of NJ coppers by die variety -- all under $100. He's up to 46 varieties! Given the rarity, that's pretty incredible...
I have been buying coins other than the morgans and peace dollars . Peace dollars are still my favorite . I still need a ms63-65 1921 high relief . Next for me are the mercury dimes and pennies . Great video
I agree. I stick to stamps and $200 is the high end of my purchases. Still enjoy coins but no longer collect. Nothing but grading and market issues. Sad.
You're right. I stack silver (gold when I can) and i feel like the numismatic coin market is manipulated just like the precious metals market. I think it's all about who you know. There's an upper echelon of collectors/dealers that set the standard. I feel like, if there's a new coin that comes out, like the reverse proof Morgan/Peace for example, and they want to keep that coin(s) from being one of those "highly priced" items, they can do it. I feel the larger Bullion/Coin dealers are in bed with grading companies like NGC/ PCGS etc.., and they manipulate the market. Grey Sheet, Red Book etc.., is just one of their tools. I love coins so much... I still collect them too, though. I buy what i like and what I think is reasonably priced.... what I can afford.
@richardhunter8241 I think he meant a total of $200 a month investment in coins in general. He showed many coins in the $30-90 range. Let’s also be real… most people into rare coins as a hobby have jobs that allow for much more than $200 worth of investment per month, wether it be in 401k or elsewhere
Good show. I hunt this way too. I take notice of dates that just don't appear frequently. I won a raw 1934-D Lincoln on eBay for $12. I called BR ms65+, came back PCGS RB ms67. Real winner.
A great area to collect on a lower budget is Kennedy halves. I've been working on a set for almost 2 years. There is a lot of different date and mint mark, clad, silver, proof and nifcs, satin finish, reverse proof, enhanced, etc. totaling almost 220 coins not including varieties. Collecting with out TPG is fun, especially when it comes to eye appeal and fresh strikes, and cameos. Believe it or not, I don't have to have a TPG tell me what I can clearly see! Did I mention that I keep my halves in card board 2x2s and 20 pocket pages, so I can make my own album.😊
Ben, I know you are located in Arizona. I wanted to know if you ever travel away from your home base area ? If you ever decide to do the Florida F.U.N. show, I'd love to meet you, shake your hand, and say thank you for all your shareable wisdom. I'm always amazed, intrigued, and thankful for your willingness to share the hobby with us.
I could never get into the idea of buying pennies. I have one older large cent that is cool, but for me I like common date half dollars and peace dollars. Still quite affordable and very beautiful coins
Haha ... I get your point , but if I was waiting tables or delivering food ( or something similar - min. wage ) to get by or to make a living , buying a $200.00 coin to look at would be the last thing I'd be doing , but , that's just me 🤔
That was the first thought that came to mind. Chances are, if you’re working minimum wage, your biggest priorities are paying the rent and putting food on the table. Having said that, I suspect Ben probably had in mind a young collector still living at home with their parents, working a job just to earn a little spending money.
Yeah I have to agree, I feel like his intentions were good but even as someone in my 20s with a solid career going for me, $200 collectibles are serious purchases that I have to be okay with selling if I needed to. Personally, I would rather buy cheaper stuff and never have to sell it until I really want to, versus keep my life savings in high end collectibles that it will surely pain me to part with when I need to buy a house and raise a family.
I enjoy lower grade early commemorative 1/2’s especially Colombian expo half’s just because I think the worlds fairs were fascinating thanks for sharing
Gorgeous coins. I'll sit through the lame jokes all the way to the end, but I do reserve the right to roll my eyes, and if necessary take even more drastic action like tell my wife.
Collecting on a budget...how would you go about trading vs buying? How many 64 Kennedy Halves would you trade for some of these coins you are displaying?
I was a Cowboys fan way back in the sixties - but when then got rid of Tom Landry the way they did - I am no longer a cowgirls fan - I was in a daze for a while when the Packers beat them in the ice bowl. I have seen some interviews with some of those players on TH-cam and one of them was saying that Merideth was hardly audible - I think is was Donovan but my memory is slipping - Best Wishes - going to the show?

The buffalo nickel is my favorite US coin, and distinctly American.

I should visit Tucson. I have not been there in more than 20 years. Just want to see how things have changed.

I’m also a long term collector of graded silver dollars and if you are serious about collecting then $200 plus is considered normal on average.
@@Alan1234xstamps are cool but knowing they’ll get destroyed by the acidity of the paper makes me avoid it.

The Ben Franklin is not my favorite half dollar but man I love that little eagle all flexing on the reverse!
I knew you were a metalhead 🤘💀🤘
He played guitar in the band, Devo- search it and see for yourself.

I I've been collecting coins for 2 years and only once spent over 10 dollars and have many intriguing coins , its doable on a budget

I'd pick one of many classic non-gold series in the 1800s and collect in VG-VF depending on my budget.
Good tip

Nice barber, it is hard to find them in that grade. lucky to find them in a nice problem free VG.
Mercury dimes are a great coin to collect, and I think out of the 78ish coins, you could get 90% of them in great condition under 10 bucks
Nice coins Ben

There's no one way to collect coins. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
But this is what you should do. Listen to me. 🤣🤣🤣
anyone else like we got plastic for the plastic holders, oh well that is just how it is....

If you are spending all your fun money on Lincoln cents your collection is BORING!!!!!
I prefer 19th century coins.
