Thanks for the shout out guys and great episode as always. Apart from moisture Fridge Friend also absorbs ethylene gas (thus extended the life of fresh produce by up to 169%) plus airborne bacteria, mould and odours 🙂
Good to know! Thanks mate.
How the hell do you measure 169%? I know I'm being pedantic but I do appreciate the general idea.
As newbies to caravanning we love your off grid series. We are learning so much. Keep up the good work, we certainly appreciate it
Awesome! Thank you!
Loving your off grid series .. that's where we want to be off grid.
Your intro roll into your episodes is great and love the drone footage of your camp at Chambers Gorge in the intro roll . As it turns out I asked my wife to marry me on top of Mt Chambers 26 years ago
My plan of attack was if she made it up there on foot then I knew she was a keeper... 💍 keep on keeping it real Pioneers!!!!
😂👌 Love it! Thanks mate, that's great to hear.
Great video, thank you both for taking the time. I use a vacuum sealer as well, so MY TIP is to prepare meals before you seal them i.e. cooked spaghetti bolognese, cooked curry dishes, marinated uncooked chicken thighs etc so you don't have to take all ingredients with you. The meals are quick and easy to reheat with minimal clean up. I hadn't thought about dehydrated vegetables, will look into them. Would definitely be a space and weight saver. Also the popping corn tip is a great one. Travel safe.
Thanks for the info!
Nothing wrong with box wine, easier to stack & doesn't waste space. Enjoy your vids
It's better than no wine!
Ha ha , I’m with you with the beer comment , cheers .
I'm not a camel 😂
We’ve been travelling Aus for 43 months (not all in a row! -haha) but you can always pick up something new. Thanks for your great tips. One thing I do is make my own butter chicken spice mix which I use specifically when we’re going through quarantine controls and all the veg has to get cooked or get thrown out. Everything gets added to some chicken and my spice mix for the most delicious “border control butter chicken” ever. It either gets frozen then or eaten over the next few days.
That is awesome!
@harpullia Would love to know your recipe for the butter chicken spice mix!!
@@carladalton6220
Spice mix:
2 teaspoons garam masala
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon paprika
2 pinchs cayenne pepper (optional)
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
plus some salt. That’s enough for 700g chicken thigh fillets. I usually treble or quadruple the spice mix before I leave home, then very simple to make the butter chicken.
Enjoy.
Hey Simon & Liz. I reckon freezing a few precooked meals e.g. spaghetti bolognaise, stews and soups before you leave home and storing them flat in the vacuum sealed bags. Sure, they take up valuable fridge/freezer space but all your meat & veg are already included and ready to go once defrosted and heated. Pre-made meals such as the bolognaise can also double up as savoury mince jaffles too. Can also make your own bread/damper rather than getting fresh bread too 🤘
Sounds great!
Great episode again, go the Weetbix and Porridge for breakfast
Absolutely!
Once again you out did yourselves, fantastic, I enjoy and learn so much. Just one thing Liz, I think I could pack all sorts of chocolates in the spaces between the items in the fridge 🤣.
Thanks so much and, yes, you're spot on!
Great content again.
We are into our 40th night of 62 without a shop, but we do have fellow travellers who fish. We have found that wrapping the vegetables in tin foil keeps them for up to 5 weeks. As well as the van Fridge, we also have a 90litre freezer and an 85litre fridge.
Water is plentiful with good drinking spring water available.
That is awesome!
Christine-wifey! Likes to bulk food ie. will buy mince & make a double batch & freezer the other half. The trick is tofreeze first in rectangle plastic container & then once frozen & cryovac so it’s stackable in the freeze.
If you've got the freezer space, that's a great option!
When I get to a c/park, I grocery shop, and pre-cook (in my pressure cooker) all of the food (make stews, casseroles, soups, cook rice, mash potatoes). Like you I take the air out of everything, and I then vac seal all of my cooked meals (as single meals), stack flat in the freezer. I freeze milk, plus I use powered milk for drinking & cooking as well. Sustagen (no flavour), dried soup mixes, chick peas - these add protein to my foods. They stack small too. I use oats almost everywhere, they're so versatile. Then I go off-grid once I've resupplied.
Thanks your the hints about that Fridge Friend. My nearly dead veges always get made into soups!
That's very prepared of you! We don't have enought freezer space to be able to pre cook that much unfortunately.
Thanks for the tips! We don’t plan on going off grid for anywhere near that long, but some of these will be great for us just doing our lap and not wasting as much food!
Found you guys when researching getting our caravan over to K’Gari (gave us the confidence to go for it) and we’re now 2 months into 7 months and enjoying going back through your videos! We don’t relate to a lot of the ‘influencers’ but you guys are awesome! Thank you!
Our pleasure! That's great to hear, thanks. And welcome!
Thoroughly enjoying the off grid series, lots of great tips and hints - much appreciated 😊
Great to hear!
Good job guys. We live on the road and like to do a big monthly shop at Woollies to get frequent flyer points, so stock up on things that are on sale, especially half price, like our almond milk (I’ll buy a box full). (We don’t have really tight weight restrictions). (Btw, we are just a tad off enough points for 2 x ‘Round the World’ tickets in Business Class, so well worth it), We buy bulk meat and pack like you do, make our own coleslaw, have plenty of wraps, use fresh and salad stuff first and cook double batches to freeze in chinese takeaway containers for quick meals. Quick cook rice sachets are great and can make a quick fried rice. We’re all electric too and have plenty of batteries/solar. Don’t have a thermomix but have an air fryer oven, which is invaluable. Makes great rotisserie roasts - the best crackling ever. Love your work. Enjoy!
Great tips!
Another option as well is too pre-cook. Things like spaghetti bol / chillie / paella.
Just don't pre-cook the pasta it goes gluggy.
Another tip, when you prepare the mince, wait till it cools down before you try to cryovac it
Love it. Thanks for sharing! A great option.
Great info, we use the powder milk & love it. Another great solution is making your own yoghurt, we EasiYo fresh yogurt Greek style, comes in 170g powder, has 4 live cultures strains & makes 1kg of yoghurt. Takes 8 hours then put in the fridge. It’s gold. You can buy the kits from Coles ,Woolies or large Independents supermarkets. You won’t been disappointed . Thanks for sharing you open house/caravan @ Brisbane Show.
Great tip!
Great tips there by you both. I love to go to the Indian supermarkets and buy the long life foil packet meals for quick and easy meals that go really well with boiled rice for example. Simple, quick, easy to store and you know you always have an easy options for those times you just cant be bothered cooking!
Nice one! Cheers.
I think those tips are good even if you arent doing long off grid trips, even just a week or two away, especially with kids, needs careful planning. ❤ cheers Cheryl
Very true!
Loving the off grid content!! Very informative and practical
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for the food tips especially the Tupperware containers for the fridge
You are so welcome!
Thanks again Simon & Liz for your tips, tricks and strategies to stay off grid for longer, much appreciated.
Cheers Howard & Chris
Our pleasure!
Really enjoying your off grid series. We have just brought our first caravan and will be taking onboard your wonderful tips. Great job guys!
Great to hear! Safe travels
Now you don’t have gas, how do you bake things, or cook pizzas?
Probably camp oven. Haven't really worried about it too much.
Some great tips and some that I hadn't thought of or heard of. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent, thanks for all the tips. Have a great week guys. Cheers 🍻
Thanks, you too!
Thanks, great tips and nice and balanced in how you live.
Thanks for watching!
Great tips!! Who would have thought square not round, love that.
Glad it was helpful!
Lots of great information in your video this week.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks guys. Some great tips. I meal plan for every trip we do. That way we only take what we need ! …
Absolutely!
Awesome tips guys thank you.
It’s great to see a different perspective🤙🏻😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
More great tips. This has been a great series. They should get a lot watches as they can be watched more than once. Thanks.
I appreciate that!
Need to get a game boy for Tetris practice :)
For sure!
Love that you love Tupperware. It is a must in every caravan! Can't wait to deck out our TupperwareVan next year when we get it. ❤❤❤
I love it!
Great tips guys. Must get myself a vacuum sealer!!
You should!
Thanks guys, lots of pearls of wisdom in your videos, this one no exception Whether you’re a newbie or have experience it’s always great to see/hear how others do things because there’s always more to learn 😊
Looking forward to seeing more of your travels in the new setup!
Our pleasure!
Great video. I use the vent smart containers…… they are fabulous!
Yes they are!
That was a great ep, thanks
Stu
Glad you enjoyed it
Bagnums of wine which is a magnum (1.5L) in a recyclable bag are now available in DM’s & other liquor stores with top brands using them also 👌
Love it!
Well done guys, did laughter at the 43 days sober 😮 what’s Liz count on you
Only thing surprised you haven’t gone down the air fryer route cooks so much and extremely healthy cooking
Safe travels & build 👨🏻🌾🤙🏻
Thanks mate. We've thought about the air fryer but you've gotta stop somewhere.
“43 days sober - not in a row”😂😅. I have to say same, I have been trying to reduce my consumption, but not 100%. (Not entering, better to pass on to someone actually travelling)
It's a process 😂
You’re 12 part series so far has been amazing 😊 we look forward to seeing more.
Thank you! 😊
Congratulations guys, you're the winners of our $100 voucher giveaway from Everything Caravan & Camping! Send us an email to simon@thelifestylepioneers.com for details!
@@TheLifestylePioneers I have swnt an email.
Oh so many great ideas. A pleasure to watch and learn. How do you crisp up a pizza now?
Good question! We're not having Pizza for a while 😉😆
Liz I have found a lot of fruit & Veg might store out of fridge in cooler climates but in hot areas or items sometimes purchased in remote locations they will not. Found out the hard way with mushy smelly greens & spuds, so be careful & keep that in mind too. Try to buy local fresh if you can stuff that has to travel to shops can sometimes be old before it gets to store.
Great tip!
Just bought an induction cooker, haven’t tried it out yet, fed up with wind blowing gas out cooking outside 😊
Hope you like it!
Some great tips there, cheers 🍻
Glad you enjoyed it
Fantastic tips, thank you ❤
You are so welcome!
As always an episode full of simple great ideas. We don’t travel full time but do some extended trips. My thought is this. While at home we do a lot of pre trip cooking, savoury mince and rice ( mince is easy to pack and store) and freeze the mince or what ever. Vacuumed packing is something we didn’t even think about, so thanks for another good tip. Will you do an episode on spare bits and pieces to carry for the van as opposed to car parts. Another couple with a dog had issues with water tanks and no bits. All sorted after a drive to somewhere not planned. Glenn in Bunbury.
Thanks, Glenn. That's great to hear. If you've got the freezer space, for sure! I hadn't thought of doing a video about caravan spares, but we'll think about it, cheers.
awesome tips for food storage and alternatives to the more bulkier items .... even that I'm not able to get off gas for cooking, I love your approach...
Glad it was helpful!
I love that you can mill your own flours and make stuff from scratch, such as almond milk. Definitely a versatile bit of kit! Thanks for the info guys, heading over to get a fridge mate 👌🏼
For sure, they're fantastic. Thanks!
There are some great tips there team. We "flat pack" as much food as we can. Dehydrated veges are fine & weigh next to nothing. We'll pass on the cask wine though. Thanks guys. 😊
😂 Cheers Dave!
Love your idea and tips Simon and Liz. Vacuum sealers and soda stream...... definitely on my shopping list for our next trip!!! Not sure about powered milk... jury still deliberating on that one 🤔🤔
Sounds great!
Some great suggestions and ideas guys. Thanks. I will definitely look at getting the fridge friend. Keep up the great videos
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks again guys. Loved the vacuum seal meat idea 😮
Glad you liked it!
Great episode on all your tips for food storage, have a go at vacum sealing vegs like your potatoes, pumpkin and sweet potato also with your other vegs in meal portion sizes them freeze them as I have tried it and they turn out ok but I was only doing a week trip, so don't know how they would go over a month, but just an idea for you to try. Can't wait for next episode to come out. Also another idea for you spirt storage is look up standard squeeze as you can get them in different sizes. Hopefully to see you on the road one day.
Great idea. We don't often have enough freezer space for extra veg though! Cheers
Great video guys 😊
Cheers!
Great tips 😊 Especially the uses for powdered milk - which I grew up with and don’t like !
Thanks so much! 😊
Hey great tips as usual, I do a lot of the same, I hardly ever use van parks etc.
Great to hear! Thanks.
Loving these videos, so much great information. My question is about coffee beans. I also love fresh ground coffee. How do you keep your beans fresh when off grid for so long, cheers Tracey
Good question! There's not a lot you can do other than buy them as fresh as we can before we set off.
thanks for yet another very informative episode.... we'd be much the same when it came to coffee and beer too hahaa😁
Glad you enjoyed it
Another great off grid vid, heaps of great tips. I am interested to know what brand and where you got the collapsible containers for the fridge please.
Thank you! These were just cheap ones from Aldi a few years ago.
Great video with tips, I write a mea plan, we don’t have to eat those meals in that order but it helps to ensure we have enough for each day. We love our thermie too so versatile for so many different things.
Love that!
Great episode guys we got some great tips thank you and safe travels
Thanks! You too!
Very helpful tips! Keep them coming as we build out our “to do” list for our big lap! Safe travels and look forward to next week’s episode! Awesome contribution to charity too… 💪
Awesome! Thank you!
Great and informative video guys and Thankyou! Can you please tell me what size of the ventsmart containers you use please as I’m looking at getting some when we get our new van in October!! Shazza (aka Amanda from Bazza&Shazza) lol
Our pleasure! We're not 100% sure cause we bought them 2nd hand. We had a quick look at the website, and we reckon they're the medium ones. We have 1 tall and 2 small. 👌
Hi from New Zealand. Another great informative show, the way you are going you might end up on Masterchef Australia. How many shows have you made. Keep up the happy travels going. Thanks Jono.P
😂 Not sure about that!
You two are just amazing, Time to update your intro the zone is gone,
Working on it! Thanks, Barry.
Great series and great tips guys. Interested about the powdered milk… do you make up a litre or so and keep in fridge, or just make enough for whatever you need right then?
Thanks. We just make enough for whatever we're using it for.
Can you advise what the power consumption is of the Thermomix please?
We covered it off in our power videos th-cam.com/video/990zaS_qSjA/w-d-xo.html 👍
hi guys, I see you have a decent size fridge. Is it a normal house fridge? Do you rate it in regards to running, keeping things cool and how it handles being on the road. thanks
It's a Dometic 12v RV fridge. Seems good so far.
I noticed you have a portable twin induction cooker, any power problems using both at the same time?
Titanium have stopped installing induction cook tops and now only supply portable units.
Ours is a single induction so no issues there 👌
Thanks once again for your great video. You mentioned saving water by using a combined shampoo and conditioner. Please tell me what brand this is.
Thanks! No brand in particular, you can buy them from the supermarket. 2-in-1 they're called.
Thank you
As always another great addition to the series. Do you have to end it at 12 episodes?
Thanks Corey. This series will be 12 parts, but we might do another one. Any topic ideas for us?
Tools/equipment and spare parts
Kids and caravans
Van accessories and upgrade priorities
Heating and hot water
Insurance and van security
Liquid tank storage options
I'm sure you guys prob have something planned for most of these but they are a few things I'd like to see !
SUNSHIINE - Powdered Milk is most good....
30 days is easy. It’s called the champagne diet. You loose weight as well. 😂
😂👌
OAT MILK for Long Life...
noice vid...
Cheers.
Nice episode brother for the Rum I use standard squeeze containers the best 🥃🥃🫣🍻🍻
So good!
Great tips! Thanks guys.
You bet!
