I recently came across your page and really love all your resin coasters. Just beautiful❤️
I would love to try this myself at home but resin is pretty pricey here in South Africa. How much resin do you normally use for a set of coasters?

When n I've mixed up too much gold flake for my coasters, I pour 2 1/2 - 5 ml into the bottom of a medicine cup and allow it to cure. When they have cured, I will remove them from the medicine cup and store then in a container until the next time I want gold centers. They don't spread out and float away like they do when the gold flake and resin is fresh.

the only way I can think of to keep it from closing over your gold is to start with the clear. like.. do a clear bottom layer, let it spread out, then add your color after the same way you do now... then extra clear and then the gold and more clear. I think it would help. resin dries outside in so it's hard to not have the closing in effect. Still came out beautiful!

Hi Julie, just a thought for your gold in the center. What if you waited longer before you add the clear in the middle, maybe te 35 mins? Thining that the white would have a chance to bloom and set up a bit. The clear would the only push out a bit and the gold would not have that far to spread. Could that work? what do you think? I think they are beautiful as they are but I share your angst, there must be a way?

Would entail more babysitting and time, but what if you wait to add any gold until the surface is semi-firm but tacky? Then you could just adhere the gold in the tacky surface, and floodcoat it all afterwards. Also, You can get gold leafing in variegated or pure colors in smaller chunks. I have some in varied shades of gold, bronze, and sort of greenish. The maker is Cosmic Shimmer gilding flakes. I dunnno. I love it the way it is, but I know you are frustrated you can't get it just the way you want. Anyway, they are simply lovely and elegant.

  • @Stephanie_Hancock

Julie, you're putting heavy into heavy. Leave your coasters for an hour or 2. Then make up your gold and use it fresh, thin and lightweight. Add a very thin topcoat with the gold. Gold won't sink if it's a lighter weight than what you are pouring it into. You don't have to wait the full 8 - 10 hours to do your topcoat, just long enough that you have a semi firm layer on top. These are so beautiful and sparkly. It's heartbreaking hearing your frustration.
