  • Unified welterweight world champion Errol "The Truth" Spence Jr. defeated two-division champion Danny "Swift" Garcia by unanimous decision Saturday night in the main event of a FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
"The moment is surreal," said Spence. "Coming back from the accident, I feel like I looked pretty good tonight. All training camp I felt good. I told people I didn't want a tune-up fight. I proved to everyone that I'm the best 147-pound fighter in the world."
Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) retained his WBC and IBF titles with an impressive performance in his hometown that saw him own a 187 to 117 advantage in punches landed, according to CompuBox. Spence controlled much of the action with his jab, landing 84 of them to slowly damage the left eye of his opponent.
"His jab was rangy and threw my timing off a bit," said Garcia. "That was the key to the fight. Everything else I feel like I adapted to. The jab was the only thing that was better than expected."
Garcia (36-3, 21 KOs), known as a supreme counter puncher, picked his spots against the unrelenting attack from Spence, having occasional success with his counter right hook and body shots. However, Spence was the more accurate fighter, connecting on 26% of his shots to 17% for Garcia.
"Danny Garcia pushed me to the limit, especially in training camp," said Spence. "I've watched him fight since he was an amateur. I knew he was a great champion and I had to be 100% ready."
"I was trying to be more active," said Garcia. "He did a good job taking away what I wanted to do. Everyone is looking for my left hook, so I thought my right hand could be the difference. I had some success going to the body with it. When two champions fight, one guy is going to be better on the night."
The two welterweight elites continued to fight hard and throw big punches to the last bell, but it was Spence out landing Garcia in each of the last six rounds. After 12 rounds, the judges scored the fight 117-111 and 116-112 twice, all for Spence.
"I had a little bit of ring rust, but I was in such great shape and took everything seriously in training so that I would not be discouraged by that," said Spence. "I worked my jab and used my angles because that was my best move.
"It's been a long year and a half, so I'm going to wind down for a week or two, then get back on it. I proved that I'm back and I'm here to stay."

It’s almost shameful how underrated Spence’s performance was in this fight. Dude fresh off a near death car accident and the longest layoff of his career.. comes in vs a very credible guy like Danny and totally controlled, outclassed and dominated him! Danny Garcia has been one of the best counterpunchers in the sport for years and Errol out-countered him WHILE COMING FORWARD THE ENTIRE FIGHT! Impressive

    • @AntMcQueen558

Spence is underrated in general. He’s often written off as just a pressure fighter, but dude does a lot of subtle things. There’s sophistication to his game.

@@AntMcQueen558 I think it's because he's not flashy like his contemporaries can be. Showmanship counts for a lot and even though he's personally my favorite fighter I can completely understand why he gets sort of written off because he doesn't embarrass you like Pernell Whittaker use to or how Floyd at his best could or wow you with ungodly athleticism like a Roy Jones, though he is generally dominant because of his pressure and relentless body work. He sticks to fundamentals and that can come across as boring if you're a fan of fighting but not necessarily a fan or connoisseur of the art of boxing itself. You don't see him stance switching often or causing big misses through exaggerated head movement and he tries to keep himself in balance and keeps himself in position to immediately fire back at nigh all times. He does a lot of subtle footwork and remains mostly defensive responsible and he's very workman like in how he just get in to you and start to just chop away till eventually you break and while its a master class in boxing imo its not necessarily an exciting way to fight. Hope I made sense I wasn't trying to malign one group of viewers as "filthy" casuals or anything but there IS a marked difference in...is appreciation the right word? When you are a fan of boxing itself not just the fighting which though they overlap can be two different things. What's that old addage that I'm sure I'll misquote, come to a boxing match and a fight broke out.

The mind and physique including diet and phenomenally rough training regimen on top of experience of being hit repeatedly leads to being up able to handle it as such.
This is actually nothing compared to what human beings have been through in history in terms of warfare. Being sliced and chopped with axes and poked with spears, and heavy iron swords. To think warriors survived battle after battle and died as old men in such conditions is truly remarkable.
Especially in battle where an army meets an army head on and it’s chaos, being attacked from back and front and every side, on your feet and on the floor.

The commentators are doing more damage to the fight experience instead of adding to it. In trying to spin their own narrative and making fun of each other they forget to talk about Garcia at all and responding to the exchanges in the ring. I suggest people to watch this without the commentary, you will have a much better time!

Just love hearing Father trainers talk to their sons in the corner. I think it's my favorite part of fights like this. Of course sometimes they get too excited and are trying to relive their fighting days through their son, but Angel Garcia is one of the best at keeping his son's head in the fight and telling him what he needs to hear. Some father's are hard, some are very technical, some just focus on their son's mind state, but Angel Garcia sounds like he could help keep Danny Garcia going in any fight he is in, had him swinging hard the entire fight, win or lose. Respect

errol was doing his thing but danny is not that guy to get run thru easily. he started loading up and landed shots that backed spence up. spence saw danny wasn't just going "to fold" and was wise enough to not get over-aggressive. he put a lot of work in the early part of the fight so he paced himself. thurman pretty much found himself in the same situation when he fought danny but errol looked more impressive

@@allaboutcars4835Here is my final take as we enter fight week.
I used to be the biggest Diego Corrales fan. He was tall and fast with thunder in both hands. He was absolutely running through the 135 pound division. And then he ran into Floyd Mayweather whom all the experts said Corrales would walk through because of his sheer size...he was 6'1 after all. Mayweather was an absolute buzz saw of precision that night in maybe one of the most lopsided championship level fights I'd ever seen. Of course I was still the biggest Corrales fan because he more than redeemed himself with some of the greatest wars we've ever seen in the sport; however, that was the night Mayweather made me a true believer... and I have an eerie feeling that Crawford is about to do the same to many of Spence's fans including me. I really love both guys, but I just got a hunch.
Brook gave Spence all kinds of trouble and Porter nearly beat him. Porter was actually beating Bud by a narrow margin, but Crawford made adjustments that Spence did not ans solved the Porter puzzle. I just think I've seen enough to know that Spence may have a long night against Bud, as I doubt he will just allow himself to be walked down and pummeled as many are predicting. I see Bud landing shots that Spence doesn't see as he lunges forward to get off those hellacious shots. He's just prime for a viscous counter. With that said, may the best man win.

Danny was in there trying to survive and go the distance. thats it that's all he wasn't trying to engage or win rounds all defence protecting his chin so Earl killed his body. If Garcia opened up with some offence and fought back like his dad was telling him to do he would have got KO. Danny could never beat Spence in the JRs under16 and on the National team Earl beat them all at the Olympic training center. If they want to beat him they better get him now before he gets back into fighting shape and get his timing back. When the ring rust is gone with a few fights they will be on there back foot trying to survive like Garcia. We haven't seen Earl at 100% in a long time
