Blue Oyster Cult is the single most under rated band in rock history, imo. Their albums are loaded with great songs. They are a top five band of all time for me.
Space Truckin' by Deep Purple is a great old school jam. If you're wanting to keep the 70s and 80s rock going. It rocks a lot harder with a great tone. Love the outro to it. Dude's vocals are nuts
It's 80s rock mellowed out by a 70s groove and infused with old school reggae. I'm driving by the beach on a summer afternoon with this song. ...That's where it takes me.
Hey George n Ryan, love you guys! I grew up on Long Island, NY and BOC is from Long Island, NY. BOC was HOT in the late 70's and early 80's. I graduated in 1979. To keep it real, when they played live locally in those days they would advertise on the Cameo as " Soft White Underbelly"...us locals knew who was in town. Just a friendly FYI, Love you two, Ron.
Hey Ronald, Long Island native who also grew up with BÖC and have loved them ever since a good friend introduced me to them. Saw them in concert many times, was at the famous Black and Blue concert at the Nassau Coliseum (great show, not only did I get to see my BÖC but I got to see Dio sing for Black Sabbath, what an awesome show). I saw them last in NYC at BB Kings in 2006 and 2007, although many diehard fans regard their current touring line up as bogus, I saw some great shows those two years. Stay Cool 😎 and… \m/ Stay Metal \m/
BOC is a decent rock band - very radio friendly but their style is very different from the hard rock albums that same year such as Motley Crue’s Too Fast For Love, Ozzy’s Diary of a Madman and Def Leopard’s High ‘n’ Dry.
Very true. It's so interesting to me that, as a kid of the 80's, usually kids I hung out with who were fans of the aforementioned bands also liked BOC. The MTV generation had an affinity for so many different kinds of music. I love that about us.
I saw these guys in 2016 and they were really good live. Such a cool and ineffable sound. Ahead of their time for sure. Sultry and sexy sound. More cowbell!!!
Other Blue Oyster Cult songs you should check out are Godzilla, Cities on flame with rock n roll, then came the last day of may, stairway to the stars, the red and the black, OD'd on life itself
I accidentally stumbled on the band in Phoenix az and had no idea it was them ,and I was like omg this band should be famous. They were playing in a club and it was drummer's solo, didn't realize it was actually them " who I love " till I saw concert tshirts
Welcome back to the 70's and early 80's! I've missed Ya! Dire Straits 'Wild West End' reaction for this recent 63-year-old Free-Thinker! :) You see... We were coming out of the 60's and Dick Clark with the whole "It's got a beat and I can dance to it!", while we were developing discernment and nuance in our music. Groups like BOC, Dire Straits, Eagles, Journey, Rolling Stones and others from the mid 70's to the early 80's. They were finding their way and we followed! It helped us to let our hair down yet a little further. :)
Another great song by Blue Oyster Cult I would highly recommend is Dominance and Submission. Career of Evil is also another great jam from the same album, Secret Treaties.
This song was a staple on my local classic rock radio station. Probably still is, though I stopped listening to radio years ago. I don't love it, but unlike a ton of the songs that got played to death when I was younger, I can still enjoy this.
BOC can always write a hit when they wanted, but also keep you looking for that obscure stuff they have made so much of. Talented band that I have been lucky to see a few times.......and absolutely great live.
Their latest album The Symbol Remains (released in 2020) is surprisingly good. First album of new material in nearly 2 decades. Buck and Eric can still rock with the best of 'em.
Awesome as always fellas. Reaper is their masterpiece of course. Burnin For You is just a great jam. Good rock song. It is radio friendly and poppy, but damn theyre playing their ass off. And when you are ready, you have to do Psychic Wars. Its nuts.
Great song, I loved your reaction to this iconic 80's hit. Astronomy, from One Enchanted Evening, is probably their best song. It seems to be about everyday life right before the sun explodes. But I want to hear what you guys think. The guitar solo is one of the best of all time.
Now that you guys have done the two commercial songs for the band, time to dive deeper into their catalog to the stuff that the fans enjoy. This song and Reaper both written and sung by guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser. These are the two songs when I see them in concert (they’re still touring) that I know they’ll play, but i don’t care if I hear. Nothing against these two, but the rest of their catalog is much more enjoyable. Easy to pick out the people that don’t know the band, as they’re the ones that are sitting on their hands most of the show, but get up and dance to these two songs. Forms good indication of who this band is, look at their first three albums (pre-Reaper). Cities On Flame with Rock and Roll Then Came the Last Days of May The Red and The Black Hot Rails to Hell Mistress of the Salmon Salt Subhuman Dominance and Submission ME 262 Flaming Telepaths Astronomy Many other good songs after the Reaper, but those first three albums set the stage. And no song sounds like the last one you heard. Very diverse. 70’s-80’s all five members wrote songs, most sang lead on their songs, so the sound is hard to pigeonhole. Enjoy!
The same guy, Buck Dharma, sings lead vocals, plays lead and rhythm guitar and he wrote the song. The guitar solo sounds so good because it's saying something and going somewhere the whole way through, same for the fills which are just as melodic.
joan crawford and veteran of the psychic wars (both off this same album) are probably my favorite boc tracks, especially the live version of votpw with the added solo that didnt appear on the album.
I have the ability to put myself in a mindset for any genre and love it so for me this perfection. It was an intricate dance which blended all the sounds of the time and the past perfectly. They toy with you on this song- swinging in and out of sounds- dancing around each expectation and feeling like a magician
Cult is so deep, so diverse, very eclectic & sometimes with a touch of humor …. never readable. Some songs heavy, some commercial, some campy the reason they are my 2nd favorite band behind Rush. Try heavy: Tattoo Vampire, Cities on Flame, After Dark, Monsters.
Everytime I hear this I go back in my head to '82 and parking cars for a fundraiser for my civil air patrol squadron. A friend had the cassette and played it endlessly that weekend.
Like Rush, BOC was heavily influenced by The Police, Talking Heads, and other new wave bands, incorporating reggae, synths, and somewhat less “heady” lyrics as they entered the 80’s. There are absolute gems on this album, less commercial and poppy. Of course, compared to today’s top 40, this is genius.
I encourage you to review BOC’s “Cities on Flame with Rock N Roll”. It’s a completely different vibe and harder edge. I’m a metal chick and love that song.
One of my favorite Blue Oyster Cult songs! For some reason, it also always makes me think of Cheap Trick's "The Flame", probably the fire metaphor. If you haven't reacted to "The Flame", give it a shot!
Their pinnacle to me was the third album "Secret Treaties", an all along gem. "Flaming Telepaths" should definitely be your next pick. Sounds way more 70's advanced hard rock than their more pop oriented (not said in a bad way) 80's sound. "Astronomy" and "Harvester of Eyes" are also classics from ST for sure.
When are Lost in Vegas going to hit some Funk?! All below have been severely sampled. 1) Sly & Family Stone " Thank You" (70) 2) Curtis Mayfiekd - " Superfly' (73) 3) Parliment - P Funk Wants to Get You Funked Up.
I love this song I remember when I first discovered it in October 2018 Red Sox was in the World Series and rdr2 was about to come out and BO4 just came out and it was a glorious time in my life
Back in the day I recall this song was near perfection for a number of reasons. It helped usher rock from the 70s to the 80s. The post segregation babies were coming of age. This was a catchy commercial rock tune from a group that was very much identified (true or not) with the whole LaVey and devil worshipping intrigue going on at the time in rock music. As well it got crazy rotation at teen and college parties because people loved to dance to it.
Guitarist is Donald Rosier, nicknamed Buck Dharma. It's his hallmark to be what I would call melodically dense, he's brilliant at it. He got his nickname because his father (who has the same name) was a famous jazz sax player in New York, and when the band first started out there, they would bill as Blue Oyster Cult featuring Donald Rosier, but they kept accidentally getting booked into jazz clubs. The band was really good at those smooth integrated background vocal. They actually have several singers through the years that would sometime sub as the lead in particular songs. Their real main vocalist is actually Eric Bloom, who has a very different style, but still sounds great in my opinion. Another couple of good fairly mainstream songs of theirs would be Veteran of the Psychic Wars, which was on the Heavy Metal soundtrack album, and Black Blade. Another couple of fan faves would be Astronomy, and Sub-Human. They're all great, but those last two are really spectacular for my tastes. A hidden gem would be Tenderloin.
This is an older early access Patreon vid guys fyi. Thanks for watching!

That riff is so good in this
My favorite BOC song is Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll from the first album
Also can I just say how amazing to watch these guys develop their Rock/Metal knowledge to the point where they can perfectly analyze songs and pinpoint every important influence/genre
Blue Oyster Cult is the single most under rated band in rock history, imo. Their albums are loaded with great songs. They are a top five band of all time for me.
I love their best songs but they have put out way too much bland material for me to have them that high, but each to his own.
@@slaydesaid8741 I can respect that. I pretty much love everything they've done.
Space Truckin' by Deep Purple is a great old school jam. If you're wanting to keep the 70s and 80s rock going. It rocks a lot harder with a great tone. Love the outro to it. Dude's vocals are nuts
Death Alley Driver by Rainbow is excellent as well
Yes! Space Truckin' is amazing
Such a great weird song
It's 80s rock mellowed out by a 70s groove and infused with old school reggae. I'm driving by the beach on a summer afternoon with this song. ...That's where it takes me.
BOC in general is just a really good straight forward rock band. Super underrated in my opinion and this is possibly my favorite.
Stay Cool 😎 and…
\m/ Stay Metal \m/
BOC is a decent rock band - very radio friendly but their style is very different from the hard rock albums that same year such as Motley Crue’s Too Fast For Love, Ozzy’s Diary of a Madman and Def Leopard’s High ‘n’ Dry.
Very true. It's so interesting to me that, as a kid of the 80's, usually kids I hung out with who were fans of the aforementioned bands also liked BOC. The MTV generation had an affinity for so many different kinds of music. I love that about us.
Blue Oyster Cult is miles ahead of Motley Crue. Go to a live show and you’ll have a revelation!
*Def Leppard
And Mötley Crüe's "Too Fast For Love" was 1983.
@@bobthebear1246 No, _Too Fast for Love_ was released on November 10, 1981.
I love that song, "home on the highway, home isn't my way, home I'll never be" Its freedom.
Their moto is On Tour Forever……..
Transmaniacon MC, Monsters, Take Me Away, Harvester of Eyes, Dominance & Submission etc. They have a LOT of GREAT songs!!
Always loved the melody on this song, the intro and the chorus... Definitely an early 80s rock/poppish song....
Known as "Biker Boogie" and the album "Secret Treaties" is one of the greatest pure guitar rock albums ever
Don't forget tyranny and mutation
Their best song. The main guitar melody, the harmonized backing vocals, and the guitar solo are all top notch.
I accidentally stumbled on the band in Phoenix az and had no idea it was them ,and I was like omg this band should be famous. They were playing in a club and it was drummer's solo, didn't realize it was actually them " who I love " till I saw concert tshirts
This song has one of my favorite guitar solos of all time.
"Dominance and Submission" off the Secret Treaties album has my favorite Buck Dharma guitar solo. Gotta hit it!
This song was a staple on my local classic rock radio station. Probably still is, though I stopped listening to radio years ago. I don't love it, but unlike a ton of the songs that got played to death when I was younger, I can still enjoy this.
All time CLASSIC. Thanks for reviewing this song fam~!
BOC can always write a hit when they wanted, but also keep you looking for that obscure stuff they have made so much of. Talented band that I have been lucky to see a few times.......and absolutely great live.
Little Feat, Paul Simon, Three Dog Night, The Faces, and Canned Heat are a few bands that y'all should check out sometime.
Their latest album The Symbol Remains (released in 2020) is surprisingly good. First album of new material in nearly 2 decades. Buck and Eric can still rock with the best of 'em.
Saw them live twice, once twenty years ago and once four years ago. They still kick ass
This was released on the birth year of MTV. The commercialism aspect is when all bands hustled to get a video together that year.
One of my fav songs from the 80s. The chorus is solid.
Awesome as always fellas. Reaper is their masterpiece of course. Burnin For You is just a great jam. Good rock song. It is radio friendly and poppy, but damn theyre playing their ass off. And when you are ready, you have to do Psychic Wars. Its nuts.
Hey guys! I love how you react to good music thanks for that and keep playing some classic stuff.
GREAT MUSIC BACK IN THAT DAY,, JAMMED TO IT A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There was so many layers to BOC, check out See you in Black, late 90s they took a little heavier turn..they always had a ton or talent.
Seconded, BoC have had such longevity heaven forbid hit like a brick when it came out.
Cities On Flame with Rock and Roll
Then Came the Last Days of May
The Red and The Black
Hot Rails to Hell
Mistress of the Salmon Salt
Subhuman
Dominance and Submission
ME 262
Flaming Telepaths
Astronomy
Many other good songs after the Reaper, but those first three albums set the stage.
Yeah, the live version of Psychic Wars thats great!
I have the ability to put myself in a mindset for any genre and love it so for me this perfection. It was an intricate dance which blended all the sounds of the time and the past perfectly. They toy with you on this song- swinging in and out of sounds- dancing around each expectation and feeling like a magician
"Dominance and Submission" would be worth your listen
Oh yeaaahh
Yeahhh
This song, Rush Spirit of the Radio... are like my go to songs in the Morning... great way to start the Day
Cult is so deep, so diverse, very eclectic & sometimes with a touch of humor …. never readable. Some songs heavy, some commercial, some campy the reason they are my 2nd favorite band behind Rush. Try heavy: Tattoo Vampire, Cities on Flame, After Dark, Monsters.
Threw you a like strictly for Tattoo Vampire 😎
"making my way downtown" LOL! Nice example there, I couldn't agree more on your point.
A classic. Came out during a dark time in my life. The video with the burning car at the end haunts me to this day.
Everytime I hear this I go back in my head to '82 and parking cars for a fundraiser for my civil air patrol squadron. A friend had the cassette and played it endlessly that weekend.
Best B.O.C. song ever
My favorite is " I Love The Night". You guys would love that one.
They are one of the more impressive live acts you will ever see
The lead guitarist is the singer of this song, Donald Roeser aka Buck Dharma. He also wrote the song.
Favorite song by them. Great chorus.
Yes I thought this was the Police when it was on the radio back in 1981.
I encourage you to review BOC’s “Cities on Flame with Rock N Roll”. It’s a completely different vibe and harder edge. I’m a metal chick and love that song.
I love the fearless attitude of your reactions. You say what you men, and as a result you mean what you say.
Green Grass and High Tides. The guitar in that song is insane. You’ll enjoy.
One of my favorite Blue Oyster Cult songs! For some reason, it also always makes me think of Cheap Trick's "The Flame", probably the fire metaphor. If you haven't reacted to "The Flame", give it a shot!
My wife and I were first introduced as husband and wife at our wedding reception to this song. One of our favorites.
Ghost is the modern day version of Blue Oyster Cult.
I have noticed some similarities
Their pinnacle to me was the third album "Secret Treaties", an all along gem. "Flaming Telepaths" should definitely be your next pick. Sounds way more 70's advanced hard rock than their more pop oriented (not said in a bad way) 80's sound. "Astronomy" and "Harvester of Eyes" are also classics from ST for sure.
When are Lost in Vegas going to hit some Funk?! All below have been severely sampled.
1) Sly & Family Stone " Thank You" (70)
2) Curtis Mayfiekd - " Superfly' (73)
3) Parliment - P Funk Wants to Get You Funked Up.
Yes please! So many Sly songs to hit
@@ashmar6204First person to respond to my funk request !!!!
Machine Gun by Commodores
This is a timeless song. Hope you do more BOC. I would suggest "Flaming telepaths"
