  • In this video we try making lure molds for multiple soft plastic swmbaits using sand. This is casting sand normally used for casting molten metals but were going to make some test lures from soft plastic.

    I really enjoy when you flesh out these ideas. Thanks!

    I love this idea, very useful for prototyping before committing to silicone etc

    Hi Franco, you should consider using plaster of paris for your mold. You don’t need to worry about the sand moving when you remove the prototype, but you can still crush up the plaster and re-pour a new mold multiple times if your not happy with the way your mold turned out.

    Really like this idea of using sand. You gave a really good example of how versatile you can be with it, and not just stuck making a single mold for each little change you want to make to your bait. Can't wait for the next video. Really excited to see if you test the semi sphere and the flat tail withe added sides

    Love your channel, just one suggestion. Wash the castings off in a small mason jar so your sand doesn't collect in your J pipe. With the sand method you could make you master out of aluminum for some of your swim baits and they would last a lifetime. Thanks for the content. 🍻 Brian

    Thanks Franco. Another great tip. I really like this idea to make prototype molds with the sand rather than committing to silicone right off the bat. I'm guessing the new tail design will combine the fish tail and boot tail. I also sort of wonder about making the 1/2 ball the opposite way with the flat end forward.

    Thanks Franko! Casting is almost a hobby unto itself.
    Contrary to most lure makers, most of my (metal) casting experience is with sand and plaster molds. Fun stuff!
    Cheers!

    Franco, your patience in forming the molds is amazing. I truly hope that all the castings work very well! Can't wait to see them in action! Great video.

    I think it’s going to be a full tail with the paddle tail on the back. Basically gussets on top and bottom of the paddle

    Wow that looked like a lot of work! But I guess there's not much else to do, well at least not outdoors lol. Looks pretty wet. I have recently been enjoying the Regular Guy Lures channel, he was doing something similar but with plaster of Paris as a cheap alternative for molds, you may be interested in checking his channel out for this, or have your own spin on it. Anyway thanks so much as ever for sharing all your experiments and ideas, you are a very kind soul and it is much appreciated. My guess is a combo of the ball tail and the fish tail. Keep up the good work Franco 👏

      I considered plaster of Paris but it takes way longer.

    If you take the ball idea and add the boot idea, you get a booted-half ball which could be interesting.

    I’m thinking a combination of the flat fish tail and the boot tail so it’s crisscrossed. I love the videos and appreciate you taking time to make all these, doesn’t look easy

    That was a great idea I would've never thought of doing a mold with sand like that. Been many years but I have had a chance to do this type of mold a handful of times it was alot of fun. I wonder how hard baits would work lol.. I always take it further in my head can't wait what you come up with next. Thanks for the great video.
    A round ball tail with a fin incorporated into ??

    my guess the flat tail, cutting out a V or C shape out of the end making it more of a double fin

    What a goofy looking batch of lures! I bet they took hours to make so I hope they work well and you can pick your favorite tail design. As for another tail I'm guessing either widened fish tail with half ball at the back or paddle (boot) with half ball at the end. Either way, good stuff.

    Have you considered using polymer clay to make the patterns? You can mold the pattern, then heat it in the oven to harden it and make it very durable. My kids used to make jewelry and figurines out of it. It might be quicker and easier than carving wood.

    • @jurajanal2277
      @jurajanal2277 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Good idea! Not sure how much quicker it would be but it would be easier to get the details in and fix blemishes before heat setting it.

    You said in your video that silicone is expensive. Could you do a video on experimenting with using caulk tube silicone, and thinning it down and use that to make molds with? I've read cornstarch and mineral spirits but not sure how well that will work. Just an idea...

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It doesn't work well for making two part molds.
      And it has other problems that make it not worth using for lure making. I wish though....

    Hello Franco, I have enjoyed you education videos.Though I have mild case dyscalculia I still thoroughly repeating the calculations of the density of various woods and other materials. I own a nursery with over 1 thousand species of native flora and a mile of trials. Many species are woody trees and shrub. I would be happy to send you label samples ranging from 8 -12" of many that you may not have used for lures if you are interest. It would be fun you see you calculate their various density and their various carving ability. I am retiring and selling our nursery to a destructive developer. Contact me you are interested and I would be happy to send them. Jim Rodgers
