Something important to note that you didn’t touch on: the amount of human trafficking that happens on mega yachts and on international waters is terrifying-and is a lot more common than we realize
@jaumartinez9006 Within the past six months there have been several international news reports of vulnerable young girls and women being pulled off these mega yachts. No BS.
@@Shinkajo My intention of the sentence was to draw attention that younger women of more vulnerable populations (which happen to be of lower socio-economic positioning) are especially targeted. I have seen quite a few mega yachts in the past few years, some worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and it's incredible to imagine someone screwing around a few weeks a year on one of them while so many americans can hardly buy groceries.
That’s a personal problem mega yacht owners are living at their ability it doesn’t make sense to pocket watch like there was some discrepancy without putting the work in people like to talk abou Russian oligarchs but what about the Ukrainian ones who kicked off the war

@@Arakox have you watched this? The amount of money they pay for workers on the yachts and where they register them. Also the fact that most are wealthy United States citizens. Any other questions?

Second video I watch from this guy and he does deliver. Excellent. For those of you wanting to know more about flags of convenience, classification societies, etc., Sal Mercagliano's "What's going on with shipping" channel is an absolute gold mine regarding the intricacies of what, when, where and why do ships end up registered in such countries. Cheers.
Should just require the owners to register it in their country of residence. Then if they register to live in Liberia they have to spend at least half the year there 👍
i don;t get why Vice keeps on cutting in camera shots from this weird diagonal angle. Mixing it in aggressively with straight shots feels weird and disconnected.
Also if you have a super yacht built in Europe once its delved if you sail outside European water you dont pay tax! Thats not the cruise ships but mega-super yacht owned by million-billionaires. They have boats built in Belgium or Germany sail to England for a few days and the tax man cant get any money when the next port of call is the Mediterranean sea. 🤷♂Its not like they cant afford the tax, but why pay it when technically you dont have too.
The scene from "Lord of War" when the crew is scrambling to paint a name change and find a Dutch flag for their arms shipping boat bubbled up in my memory after watching this - keep 'em coming!
8:32 that’s insane, could you imagine being trapped in another country that won’t let you off a ship that may actually be dangerous to be on, and there needs to be things in place so this doesn’t happen to people
This happened to the crew of the RV Rhosus, where is the ship’s owner abandoned the un-seaworthy ship in Beirut. The crew was not allowed to come to land for nine months. To make matters worse, this ship was carrying ammonium nitrate which was moved into a warehouse and exploded a few years ago, damaging the port of Beirut.
good question would be "why countries do not ban vessels not registered under their own or "whitelisted" flag that ensures the standards are kept?" - in reference to the oil industry...
I uh, give my condolences to the staff at Vice News who have worked so hard to deliver quality news and reports over all these years, that the current situation with Saudi Arabia is undermining the legitimacy of this channel. I used to be a subscriber, but no more.
Flags Of Convenience also provide additional benefits, e.g. protection by the navy of the country who's flag you're flying - so if you're flying a Chinese flag and you're boarded by pirates, a nearby US navy ship would probably not intervene, but if you were flying a US flag the US navy would be bound by law to assist you. It's not like this system *only* exists so that people can abuse it, it has other, more legitimate uses as well.
@@anthonyburlison2044 I mean I used to work in yachting and you're so far off the mark there. Maybe someone like Trump would do that, but most yachts are just toys. The owners are almost never on the boat, so they're not paying for someone to protect a load of waitresses and housekeepers. What's your own experience? On the boats I worked on the staff had to share bedrooms half the time - there certainly wasn't room for any soldiers and all their kit, most of the time we could barely fit the chefs aboard!
Similar thing happened un Trueste, Italy. The worlds biggest sail boat (owned by a russian oligarch) was there for repairs and got confiscated when the "not a war on ukraine" started. It's still there drifting about just outside of the port because Italy doesn't want to cover the expenses of having this thing docked. Looks pretty cool though.
The topic is really interesting, bzt i think the video cpuld have a little more specific information. Like what are the specific regulations they bypass or how much they are able to safe
I agree, it would've been nice for him to include some facts instead of making baseless statements. With regards to yachts flagging in the Cayman or Marshall Islands, or other red ensign countries, it doesn't afford them (m)any advantages other than tax; unlike US flagged vessels they follow MLC 2006, a workers' rights convention that provides more strict rules on hours of rest than those flagged in the US (and other non-IMO Whitelist countries). Most yachts will still follow ISM, or an adapted version, which helps ensure crew and vessel safety and environmental protection. Sure the container ships have convenience flags and have a lot of employees from third-world countries as they're a business and in the business of making money, but yacht owners are seeking the best with pretty much no budget, they're going to get a better vacation if their crews are happy, well fed and looked after.
The amount of drugs and prostitution on these yachts are insane. They're called "yacht girls" but they're essentially luxury prostitutes some of them are ex models or semi-famous lingerie models.
