Mega Yachts and False Flags: Unmasking the Super-Rich's Offshore Secrets

- We’re on the high seas of the offshore world. Why are people - that is, rich people - throwing up flags for the wrong countries on their damn boats and how does this help them get richer and avoid rules (like, say, paying people and being held responsible for major ecological disasters)? How are countries capturing luxurious boats secretly owned by Russian oligarchs?

So wheres all the human rights abuses labour rights shouters ... they focus on Dubai and ignore their own type
Something important to note that you didn’t touch on: the amount of human trafficking that happens on mega yachts and on international waters is terrifying-and is a lot more common than we realize
You wouldn't cover the fuel.
@jaumartinez9006 Within the past six months there have been several international news reports of vulnerable young girls and women being pulled off these mega yachts. No BS.
@@kickingleaves5122Are you telling me that these big yacht operations are surpassing Jeffrey Epstein, who use to owned an island for sex trafficking?
@@kickingleaves5122as opposed to those invulnerable young girls?
@@Shinkajo My intention of the sentence was to draw attention that younger women of more vulnerable populations (which happen to be of lower socio-economic positioning) are especially targeted.
On another note, I think it might be helpful if you chose to take a lesser combative approach. Being a contrarian jus’ cus’
isn’t especially conducive for meaningful conversation and dialogue. I find that my life is astoundingly more meaningful when I’m not such a douche.
Sigh. It just never stops. The infinity of nesting dolls of horrible people.
I am here for this guy's energy !
Love his vibes
I have seen quite a few mega yachts in the past few years, some worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and it's incredible to imagine someone screwing around a few weeks a year on one of them while so many americans can hardly buy groceries.
lol these a reason people stay at the bottom and its the exact thing your doing complaining about the rich instead or working towards it.
@@IRantweekly let me know when you become a billionaire.
@@IRantweeklyyou nailed it bro. I used to be a loser that hated winners. I really did use to be like these people. Now I step over them
@@RedLemon69 Well dont be the sucker who buys crap
That’s a personal problem mega yacht owners are living at their ability it doesn’t make sense to pocket watch like there was some discrepancy without putting the work in people like to talk abou Russian oligarchs but what about the Ukrainian ones who kicked off the war
😮😮😮 twisted how much power these power have its amazing. They'll kill our entire race to just be rich for a couple generations 😮😮😮
Bro please keep doing these. It's one of the only Vice series I care about anymore. I dig the humor and presentation, keep it up bro!!!
How much were you paid for this positive comment?
Same!! Fantastic series 👏
So glad you did the research and made this. Nobody holds the wealthy to task.
That’s what happens when we allow them to purchase newspapers, cable news networks, politicians, etc
what research
What research?
In germany this thing is/was all over the news since the full scale invasion of Ukraine - I Love VICE but they are kinda late to the party?
The were seizing Yachts left and right from all these Oligarchs and sold them - Because nobody came to 'pick them up'.
@@Arakox have you watched this? The amount of money they pay for workers on the yachts and where they register them. Also the fact that most are wealthy United States citizens. Any other questions?
when did they say how much they are paid? and where they register them is clearly evident by the flags they fly. wouldnt exactly call that research.
they listed like 3 people from america who are all in the news with their yachts. also not really research. any other examples?@@spamlives77
Second video I watch from this guy and he does deliver. Excellent.
For those of you wanting to know more about flags of convenience, classification societies, etc., Sal Mercagliano's "What's going on with shipping" channel is an absolute gold mine regarding the intricacies of what, when, where and why do ships end up registered in such countries.
Cheers.
I LOVE your series. These loopholes are something that is a well known secret among the elite. Hope to see more of you and this type of content.
Oh my god, I want more of this guy and more of this show!
I'd support an all-out banning porting of vessels registered on a 'black-list' consisting these countries
Should just require the owners to register it in their country of residence. Then if they register to live in Liberia they have to spend at least half the year there 👍
No one give a f***
what are you talking about @unitedstatewarehousefordru5841
This is SO well done!
Adam Conover on Ketamine
Who’s that ??
Love the energy of the host of this series!
Also if you have a super yacht built in Europe once its delved if you sail outside European water you dont pay tax! Thats not the cruise ships but mega-super yacht owned by million-billionaires. They have boats built in Belgium or Germany sail to England for a few days and the tax man cant get any money when the next port of call is the Mediterranean sea. 🤷♂Its not like they cant afford the tax, but why pay it when technically you dont have too.
How about Saudi ships?
i don;t get why Vice keeps on cutting in camera shots from this weird diagonal angle. Mixing it in aggressively with straight shots feels weird and disconnected.
Why does it seem like this guy just discovered he finally won't get sent to the principal's office for cussing?
8:32 that’s insane, could you imagine being trapped in another country that won’t let you off a ship that may actually be dangerous to be on, and there needs to be things in place so this doesn’t happen to people
This happened to the crew of the RV Rhosus, where is the ship’s owner abandoned the un-seaworthy ship in Beirut. The crew was not allowed to come to land for nine months. To make matters worse, this ship was carrying ammonium nitrate which was moved into a warehouse and exploded a few years ago, damaging the port of Beirut.
I'm able to go to a restaurant where they house super yachts and in all the years going I've only seen an US flag once!
what restaurant is it!
As a Geographer, I love me videos based around Flag discussion. Even when they’re bad
Similar thing happened un Trueste, Italy. The worlds biggest sail boat (owned by a russian oligarch) was there for repairs and got confiscated when the "not a war on ukraine" started. It's still there drifting about just outside of the port because Italy doesn't want to cover the expenses of having this thing docked. Looks pretty cool though.
Italy should be nuked for interfering
Love this series
good question would be "why countries do not ban vessels not registered under their own or "whitelisted" flag that ensures the standards are kept?" - in reference to the oil industry...
I like this guy, and I like what he reports. More of it would be great.
A great series!
Nice job!
Might as well raise the skull and cross bones☠️
Yeah but then they would just file and get a huge insurance claim...
That was fu*kin hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So where's "Inside Saudi Crown Prince's Ruthless Quest for Power?" Weird that it'd disappear right after you made a big business deal with the Saudis.
Glad to see Vice doing what I used to do..
Flags Of Convenience also provide additional benefits, e.g. protection by the navy of the country who's flag you're flying - so if you're flying a Chinese flag and you're boarded by pirates, a nearby US navy ship would probably not intervene, but if you were flying a US flag the US navy would be bound by law to assist you.
It's not like this system *only* exists so that people can abuse it, it has other, more legitimate uses as well.
The people that own these mega yachts don’t need help from the US Navy. They hire a bunch of retired navy seals for their own private security.
@@anthonyburlison2044 I mean I used to work in yachting and you're so far off the mark there. Maybe someone like Trump would do that, but most yachts are just toys. The owners are almost never on the boat, so they're not paying for someone to protect a load of waitresses and housekeepers.
What's your own experience?
On the boats I worked on the staff had to share bedrooms half the time - there certainly wasn't room for any soldiers and all their kit, most of the time we could barely fit the chefs aboard!
I really like the host😅 he’s so unique and funny
I can't grow 50 poppies in my garden but these monsters can get away with these atrocities?! Yeah right
The scene from "Lord of War" when the crew is scrambling to paint a name change and find a Dutch flag for their arms shipping boat bubbled up in my memory after watching this - keep 'em coming!
Please keep making offshore videos i love these so much🥺
Ahoy, mother-scratchers! Eat the RICH, y’all!
Great story, strange presentation 😂
the transition to the captains robe 10/10
They making the vice accountant do his own show as punishment for the fact that they went through a bankruptcy 😂

Well done!
I like the dude who made this video 😂 dude is pretty funny, I’d like to see some more content through him
One of a few things worth watching on Vice since Hamiltons Pharmacopoeia
Why don't you do an episode about Mohammed Bin Salman's offshore accounts?
Hahaha
Cool video, talk about the Saudis next 😊
Is he wearing Glen Quagmire's shirt??🤨
I love this series. The salt is super strong with this one. Perfect salt for a Margarita on my mega yacht.
AMAZING!
We need an offshore series
Great video
very good documentary
Important to know so when I retire & get my few million yatch🤣😂
"Inside Saudi Crown Prince's Ruthless Quest for Power" was taken down!
The topic is really interesting, bzt i think the video cpuld have a little more specific information. Like what are the specific regulations they bypass or how much they are able to safe
I agree, it would've been nice for him to include some facts instead of making baseless statements.
With regards to yachts flagging in the Cayman or Marshall Islands, or other red ensign countries, it doesn't afford them (m)any advantages other than tax; unlike US flagged vessels they follow MLC 2006, a workers' rights convention that provides more strict rules on hours of rest than those flagged in the US (and other non-IMO Whitelist countries). Most yachts will still follow ISM, or an adapted version, which helps ensure crew and vessel safety and environmental protection.
Sure the container ships have convenience flags and have a lot of employees from third-world countries as they're a business and in the business of making money, but yacht owners are seeking the best with pretty much no budget, they're going to get a better vacation if their crews are happy, well fed and looked after.
Love this guy I really really hope he gets a whole series
It's sad that I have to unsubscribe to this channel but I got morals and unlike vice no amount of money would make me sell my morals
the older i get the more i realise there are few down sides to wealth. Should be a lesson somewhere taught by someone - aquire great wealth to avoid being poor. I wasnt taught that as a young person, but i wish i had been.
Jesus said that a rich man has as much chance to get into heaven as a camel does fitting through the eye of a needle!!!
They might have a good time now but their eternity i wouldn't wish on anyone!!!!
how come there aren't bands of pirates that go around robbing mega yachts?
Vice, what the hell was this? Embarrassing
mikefrompa sent me, banger vid
here from the DSA central committee-this piece is mike approved 👍🏻
Jesus... tell whoever edited this to cut down on the stimulants. You don't need to cut between angles every three words!
I uh, give my condolences to the staff at Vice News who have worked so hard to deliver quality news and reports over all these years, that the current situation with Saudi Arabia is undermining the legitimacy of this channel. I used to be a subscriber, but no more.
Id love to fall asleep on a yacht
Hey vice, how’s that Saudi blood money?
Hey, how are you guys spending Saudi Arabian blood money, which you got for posting positive about them?
Did Saudi Arabia bail Vice out of their bankruptcy?
@@kickingleaves5122 basically..
Any of those yachts belong to Saudis ?
This dude is too funny ❤it
Mi familia et englais. I grew up in the south. If I could go to another country. It be to help people start business in poor country. Like south america or africa or southeast asia.
The amount of drugs and prostitution on these yachts are insane. They're called "yacht girls" but they're essentially luxury prostitutes some of them are ex models or semi-famous lingerie models.
Hardly breaking news mate.
Cough cough Meghan Markle …
Wanna be space cowboy. Hysterical and sad at the same time. We won't have to feed them or let them sleep
Brought to you by Saudi blood money honestly it just compromises your whole view point as we have come to know it just embarrassing
That’s why they invented torpedoes
1:15 it seems criminal to mention DeVos' yacht, then not tack on "along with her other 9 yachts" (or whatever the current count is)
dying company lmao
"hey I have an idea let's ruin any credibility we have left with a gimmick"
I seriously need to go to sleep
Most have Cayman passports or similar too, for general tax evasion and a stronger passport for easier travel without visa/entry requirements
Yeah you know nothing about yachting- Any vessel over 500GT needs to follow all international and national regulations including SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC Etc- irrespective of whether they are pleasure or commercially registered,
Americans fly foreign flag because US flag means nothing when you are cruising around the EU waters- and you can only employ US Nationals which means hassles for VISA in Europe.
Axioma- money went to JP morgan because they had a first priority mortgage registered over it- which means once a vessel is sold, first crew get paid then they bank- thats how mortgages work....
MikefromPA sends his regards
This video is so misinformed it is funny.
Go to work and the government takes half your money. The only way to become rich is to figure out how to NOT PAY TAXES!!
Dude all the US Oligarchs (yeah you call them "super rich") do the same thing.
Wait NO HAITIAN or SOMALIAN flags ?? Come on Rich people you can go even lower
Secret lives of the ultra rich.
Man, those crew members could easily just go rogue and take their billionaire out and do hood for some people but sadly they must be just as corrupt.
Aren't you guys going bankrupt??? Wonder why???
Enjoying that blood money? Bet you are
ahoy MF'ers hahaha. IM IN.
Oooh how Vice has fallen too long to become what they swore to be against
This is not a funny topic. Get this funnyman outta here
Please keep this series vice this is so good
Tax avoidance is patriotic, tax evasion is a crime, I'd do the same thing!💯
VICE production value has somehow regressed. This is crap media
VICE's insincere and forced cursing reminds me of the "How do you do, fellow kids?" meme.
Yeah it did feel a bit rough.. enjoyed it otherwise.
do a video on epstein's island
This is why vice is filing chapt 11
??? wtf u on abt freak
they are filing chapter 11 bc u can't fund 500 employees with youtube clips and shite articles

@rrrbBbiEEERoba about what? They don't have tax problems with the irs or they filed for bankruptcy?
