    Very nice fine art. Could you do an episode about fine art printing, I mean, all the workflow, including the choosing of the paper to print. Thank you!

    Great video. Thanks Serge. Also, the banding is definitely a youtube thing. When I download your raw file, no banding.

    Gotta envy that lean camera rig. An itty bitty tripod for a 3 minute exposure? Risky. I'm surprised the bridge is stable enough. Perhaps a testament to the image stabilization on the A7 rII.

    Have you tried "dehaze" to make the water white? I shot a long exposure and used a brush and the dehaze slider to make the water white.

    Just curious - why do you use long exposure when you are not blurring sky detail/moving water, or trying to remove people from the frame? What's the difference between this long Exp and just a regular shot?

    • @grahamjgreen
      @grahamjgreen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Martin Kincade The river was moving and therefore blurred with a 3 min exposure.

    You should try Noiseless from Macphun, I use it on almost all of my photos (I like to lift the shadows a lot which causes a lot of noise, even on my D810). It is amazing. I got all of their software for only $99 when they had their sale on the Creative Kit for Christmas. Worth every penny.

    Extremely knowledgeable as always. I have a question, did You forgot to use "Masking" under "Sharpening" or it was intentional because it is ideal to use when You have noise in sky and dark areas. Thank You

    How about adding a tiny bit of feathered white vignette to blend down the the vignette that naturally occurred from the ND filter. Don't eliminate but just slightly reduce the vignette at the edges.

    Hey serge ramelli, im a big fan of ur photography and retouching.. But i would like to know whether we can shoot long exposure without nd filter or not!! Nd filters are very expensive and if theres any way with retouching the photo to make it a long exposure, please share.. Thanks and keep doing your good work.

      To create this effect, you can take multiple images and blend them in Photoshop... avoid using cheap ND filters as they do more bad than good to your photo.

  • @drvpereira
    @drvpereira 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    How did you take a 3 minute exposure shot at daylight, F16 and the photo didn't came out all white? When I try to do this, all I see is a white image. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm an amateur.

    To all the haters around... the banding could also be a result of video compression. @serge: you forgot to mask out the sharpening this time ;)

    • @DavidAlanReece
      @DavidAlanReece 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nico Kaiser It is 100% due to video compression. I download his sample Raw files each time and they are perfect. I don't understand why folks won't do a bit of research and use the free tools provided. They are missing the experience of discovery by simply watching a video and then clicking on the next.

    What is the difference between the Variable NDX fader filter and a normal variable nd filter? Does the fader one do something different?

    • @chriswilsoncov
      @chriswilsoncov 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean a graduated filter?

    • @StevenBrener
      @StevenBrener 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vlog Watcher The Fader is variable, meaning that you can dial in the amount of darkening. Sounds convenient, but, it is really made up of two polarizers, and as you move towards the limits you'll find weird banding often happens. Regrettably, I find that you get better quality using a static ND filter that has a set value.

    Thanks for the video Serge. Again, I think new folks who are getting into super long-exposures should understand how to actually calculate the length of exposure with the 10-stop ND filter, which is missing from this video, and from your previous video. Doing your method could be a waste of time if the end exposure comes out under/over exposed.
    Just take your shutter speed w/o the ND filter, multiply by the number of stops (in this case 10 stops), and you get your exposure. E.g 1/6s without ND; With ND: 1/6 * 2^10 = 170s.
    OR use the ISO6400 rule to quickly calculate the exposure at ISO100. E.g. at ISO6400, shutter speed is 3s; at ISO100, shutter speed is 3 minutes (1s at ISO6400 = 1 min at ISO100).
    OR simply use the camera's meter in manual; dial to 30s, and see how many stops it is underexposed. multiple by that number of stops to get shutter speed in Bulb mode.
    OR if the ND filter came with a chart, use that! :)

    • @nycaxl
      @nycaxl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for that, but when we are math haters: how are we supposed to do so? ;) I mean: I don't even know how to time by two a1/6 of a second! In "real number", what would 1/6 stand for?

    • @luckyblueduck
      @luckyblueduck 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nycaxl lol. I think you can double and half numbers - you don't need to hate math for knowing how to double a number and how to divide by two. There are no complex equations. Fundamentally, adjusting exposure is all about doubling and halving either iso, aperture, or shutter speed. Keeping one of the three constant, if you double one, you should half the other for the same exposure. I'm sure if you start shooting in manual (you might already be), overtime with experience, you'll begin to see the relationship. Some math fundamentals are required here, e.g. knowing fractions, etc. hope this helps. cheers!

    • @nycaxl
      @nycaxl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +luckyblueduck thank you for your answer. i am actually shooting in manual, but more of a feeling person or trial and error one if you like... So, i guess i am wasting my time by not knowing my math lol! And fractions are 25 years away for me, so i don't remember much ... But i never took the time to see that they were all connected so precisely in that way: keeping one constant, doubling another one and halving the third for instance...

    Is it me or is there a lot of circle banding around the edges of the long exposure photo? I hear that the Sony a7r2 is terrible with long exposure photography because there's banding and hot spots.

    Sergey needs to invest in a Dustbuster! Seems to be a common theme with all his photos and comes across as very amateur!
    Being sold pricey tutorials from someone who can't be bothered to spend 30 seconds keeping their lens/sensor clean? I don't think so!
