I just love Shirley Horne, wish I coud've seen and heard her perform. She's my favourite vocalist of all time. Deep gratitude to the gift she brought to us all.
She's so exquisite! She should be way more famous, but apparently, her perfect taste and integrity won the day. 'Largely rejecting efforts to remake her into a popular singer, she stated: "I will not stoop to conquer." '
Her voice here makes me feel I am sailing on a schooner with a big spinnaker, filled in the tropic winds, speeding along with the dolphins jumping for joy ahead and in the bow wake. What a feeling! The orchestration !
It's interesting how music effects us.I being a former shipboard engineer would love to be in the engine room southbound somewhere in the Caribbean with everything going well on a moonlit night. The 700 ft long ship rocking along with the waves.
I had the pleasure of seeing Shirley Horn perform twice at One Step Down in Georgetown in Washington, DC, her hometown and mine. I was in awe of this woman's talent. She not only sang so beautifully and soulfully, but she made that piano talk! I know she's up there delighting God and the angels with the gift he bestowed upon her.
The Late, Great!! Legendary Shirley Horn! A musician, pianist, vocalist and a interpreter of song. Barbra Streisand said, "She is a artist and a vocalist beyond perfection" I agree!!!! Rest In Paradise...(project 52)
I just love her so ! Her spirit, voice and inimitable piano playing will be in my heart and head forever . Grammy and Academy and other awards winner composer and orchestra arranger Johnny Mandel said of Shirley He never worked with a singer/musician who could play and sing at the same time as superbly as Horn . Mandel also said Horn's piano playing was as good as modern jazz legend Bill Evans. The great & eclectic composer & arranger Quincy Jones said of Horn " Her piano playing is like haute couture clothing while she seduces you with her voice"
I am sure heaven sent her here to bring the beauty of her music to engulf the world. Her piano playing alone is a work of art. And that voice! She transports you to whatever world she wants to share with you. She wraps that miraculous voice around every word. Just close your eyes and you are gone. And some say there is no God? Shirley is proof. Rapturous.
Shirley (also the name of my mother) was never "underrated" she took time off from a brilliant career to attend to her children. Which makes her even more amazing.
In 2002 I was on a lunch break from work and wandering through a Coconuts music store...saw one of those Verve compilations and this was on it...I was hooked instantly...she was truly amazing...very cool how she became more of a star in her 50's....needless to say I have more of her music now....sorry I never got to see her in concert....sigh
Such pacing! Love this CD ! Used to play this for my kids when they were young. Played it with the lights turned down low. One daughter still listens the same way to relax. Can't recommend it more. Where are today's Shirleys?
She has the voice of a younger woman. As a compliment, I couldn't match the voice with her appearance. Her passing was a loss because there are not many voices that could produce her tone quality...Return to Paradise one of my favorite.
I had the opportunity of meeting this mega talented jazz lady some years back in DC, when I was trying to get my dust off the ground... so inspiring 16th an T
This track is from her Grammy Award-winning disc, "Here's To Life:Shirley Horn W/ Strings", 1992. Personnel: Shirley Horn (vocals, piano); Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Charles Ables (bass instrument); Steve Williams (drums); Johnny Mandel, producer & arranger.
shes so badass. her piano is as perfect as her singing and the arrangements are simply the coolest. check her version of my man's gone now on the same record. why isn't this woman my grandmother
I know this one from a sampler in CD sound quality - it's a delight! Listened to it a hundred times... On the side of Shirley, there are her marvellously imaginative instrumental partners, most notably piano and a agile bass, together with an exciting arrangement full of surprises! Who are THEY??

So cool and elegant. Her haunting rendition of "My Man's Gone Now" left me breathless.
She was such a wonderful vocalist. And pianist. One of those unforgettable musicians who live on in their fantastic recordings.
Accidentally discovered her on radio once, she creates magic with her music, RIP
loved it back when I was 16-17 years old, still has that pull at 44.

Extraordinaria Superclase. Un abrazo a la Eternidad.
Hard to find an adjective of praise that hasn't been exhausted on Ms. Horn's behalf--and deservedly so. She's in a class all by herself.
What a Wonderfull singer !

I feel so happy to have found her,and enjoyed her mastery of voice and keys before she went to be in the choir of The Lord. I miss her Very much
