- This can be a perfect by-ear lesson for beginners starting their journey picking out melodies up the neck. We do very simple melodies that many folks know like Mary Had a Little Lamb, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, You Are My Sunshine, and She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain.
We are playing out of a closed position which means no open notes. This way you can take this shape and move it to any other key you want. When this skill becomes strong, it unlocks the music of the mandolin in profound ways.

Do NOT underestimate what you are doing. Simplicity is rare on tjis media. Everybody and their dog wants to be a sombody. An instructor that wants to boast about themselves by convoluting simplicity.
Thank you again for your much appreciated basic beginners instruction.
I look forward to.many more steps in musical education.
Thank you for the kindness Dennis! I want to help as many folks as I can and your reflections are encouraging. I hope you connect with more videos you find helpful here down the road!
Very good lesson and theory of the closed position playing. That's how I play amazing grace
you're ahead of the curve here John! thanks for the kindness! :)
Thanks for another helpful lesson, Christopher! The exercise you suggested is golden.
So welcome Karl! Glad you connected - thanks for the kind comments! 😀🎶
Here he goes with the twinkle little star. 😊
he can't stop - he thinks it's helping :D
@@ChrisHenryVideos It's definitely working. You're right: these songs are so familiar they roll right off your finger tips and your brain knows instantly when you're wrong. They also provide tons of space for trying all the new techniques you're teaching. My only criticism is you talk about these songs so often you should abbreviate them to save yourself time. We're going to work on some TTLS and some TLIYL and some YAMS and some MHALL today folks! Wait, maybe that won't work. On second thought, just keep doing what you're doing, Chris! :)
I’m glad you can feel where they can be a good bridge for exploring without having to have the road map out all the time so to speak! Maybe some nicknames might come for brevity! 😀
Theres a pattern you can use on every fret up the neck
How do the workshops work??
each one is different, but with this one, i'll probably start of with easier material, then work up to double stops, and then end up with some improvising and Monroe Style Devices. Plenty of chances for questions - some are more interactive than others, a lot of that can depend on who is in attendance. this one is going to be on the larger size, so i'll probably be able to cover more material by doing a lot of demonstrations guiding and then answering questions along the way. So that's a basic idea for the flow - happy to aim to answer any other specific questions you might have!
@@ChrisHenryVideos awesome!! I’ve seen things about them but wasn’t sure exactly what they were, thanks for anwsering have a good night
welcome! Cheers! :D
