- In this episode, we're back to work with the building of our Hybrid Homestead. From foundation footings to the ridge cap of the metal roof, we have built this ourselves. Our biggest DIY building project to date and we're very pleased with our accomplishments. The next step is to build the cupola and start plumbing the building.

Fantastic progress J.C and Laurie. I turned 61 this year, officially took the N.C General Contractor Exam and passed it. Currently building 4 homes under my new G.C sideline business, and a 5th home that will be for my family. Dream it, plan it, build it !! Thrilled to see that your health has allowed you to continue to pursue your dreams. We don't have any guarantees on our time here , however nobody can say I wasted mine pursuing my goals. Once I get my family home built I will purchase land above 3,000' elevation in the N.C mountains and build my camp, including a bushcraft campsite. Keep on keeping on J.C , God bless you and yours this Thanksgiving. We are blessed brother🙏

For part of my working career I was a union carpenter and I have to tell you with all the breaks we had…we never got any Kissing breaks. Definitely joined the wrong union…lol.

I was a little disappointed to hear you were selling the family camp and moving to another property, I guess because it was in the family for so long. You can do collar ties like that, no problem. But it's important to note what they no longer do. They no longer keep your rafters from drooping in the middle and pushing the top of your walls out. In this situation, you don't need to worry about that because your attic floor joists hold everything together. Other houses, houses that have vaulted ceilings, they would want to do rafter ties the old fashioned way, attached to the side of each rafter, preferably as low as reasonably possible. And they can double up the collar ties later, if they want to make the nailing distances the same.
Yes that is correct for applications other than what I have here, but if you view further videos you'll see knee walls and interior framing that will eliminate those potential issues.
