    @ross what types of peach tree are these? All my blooms died from the late Frost on my Redhaven and Carolina Belle this year is why I'm wondering. I'm looking for something that blooms later

      I'm probably going to have a rough time with peaches/apricots as well. Last year I lost my peaches to a frost. This year I think I got lucky.
      There's a few strategies I may have to employ in the future, but I think for now.. the best advice I can give is to play around with your planting location. Having them on higher ground may be best & in a warmer microclimate that'll avoid frost on those early spring nights. Site selection is in my mind the most important factor and honestly should be your first thought. Perhaps playing around with planting depth could help as well. Grafting high and planting the rootstock much deeper. I would be interested in putting in some research at some point to be honest.
      Second thought would be variety. Definitely wise to find a later blooming variety. One is Redhaven. The other is Elberta. I'd also have to do some research to find a variety that will bloom much later.

      Intrepid, reliance, contender, and finger lakes are all good cold hardy peaches. My experience is that mid winter sub zero temperatures affect bud damage more than late frost. I had snow on my trees last year after bloom but still had a good yield. This year we seen at least 90% flower bud loss from sub zero temps but as prolific as peach trees are that’s still a pretty good crop of peaches.

    Thinning and bagging is a great idea for bigger fruits. You have some nice healthy trees. Hope you have a good day!

    Do the bags help you with the plum curculio?

      Put it in the ground asap. Wait for a cooler day with rain coming.

    Can those peaches and dry them and give them to neighbors. Tie up the branches. After the fruit is picked THEN open up the inside branches to sun.

    squirrels keep stealing my peaches, last year my red baron peach produced 20 huge peaches, they take a small bite and drop it to the ground; you have any tips on squirrels?

      Those Organza Bags help with a lot of critters. You can also try those brown paper bags that kids use for their lunches.
      Alternatively.. find something that ripens around the same time the squirrels can eat instead.

    Those peach trees look great! Especially since spring took a while to get here.

      I think we are too impatient! I thought our spring was right on time. Plant some stuff that will do well in cooler weather and you'll see what I mean. Glad to see you still watching after all this time.

      Ross Raddi I am in Toronto and we are still hitting almost freezing at night. Boooooo...It's usually not this cold by now but what can you do. Enjoy your info, great stuff, I will probably end up with a peach tree soon because of you. By the way, totally losing on the cold weather stuff, lost my kale and cabbage already.

      Ouch.. Yeah. Canada is rough this year. I've got a friend in Toronto who lost his entire GH in a storm. The thing uprooted and blew away down the street along with his trees :/

    Might be a little off topic... but what size bags would you recommend for figs?

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      6x9 is a great size for a lot of fruits. Some of the larger figs may not fit in something a little smaller.
