Oh how I yearn for Chicago in this era. The newest vehicle I saw was a 1952 so that’s probably the correct year for this film. Chicago used to be a really great place, but so then was the rest of the world. I remember going to Chicago in the 60’s & 70’s and it was very exciting to someone growing up 2 hours away in a small town.

Someone must have been fascinated by trains.

Definitely pre-'55. The CNW at the 7.30 mark is pulling Union Pacific coaches, indicating that they still had their contract with UP to continue the "Cities" trains before switching to Milwaukee Road. Awesome footage, wish the transportation world were still like this.

I'm seeing no autos later than 1952.

The CA&E is still running to Wells Street, so this is definitely earlier than September 20, 1953.

This film is from the early fifties, maybe earlier. Can't make out the sign on the single wooden El car @ 2:08, but the center entrance "Baldie" El cars @ 2:17 were used in the early Fifties. I rode on them when we lived on the South Side, and some were still lettered for the Chicago Rapid Transit Company. Remember riding the Green Hornet PCC's and the Red Pullmans and the North Shore too - all big adventures for a little kid!

2:04 reminds me of my family driving down to Maurice Mandel & Co ( another Furniture showroom located on Wabash) in 1983 or 84 to get my sister a trunk for college.

And to think how proud they were of those trains and buses. Sort of like me with my flip phone

I know this film is older than 1957...I recognize the cars better than I do the trains. These are what automobiles looked like AFTER the Capone era til the roughly 1955.

Yeah that eastbound ride along with the CAE is just awesome. Pass over the BOCT diamonds in Forest Park and then meet a short freight train at Harlem Ave. Unreal to compare the area pictured in the video to the present day view. Wow.

Based on the paint schemes of the "L" trains in the early moments, I'd say this is more like 1952 or 53.

Also, I see no 1955-57 autos in Chicago, so I think you're right. I also notice there are wooden "L" cars. I believe the last ones were removed from service in 1955 at the latest.

Also, the CA&E didn't run east of Forest Park after September 1953. Further, the "L" tracks were partially relocated to street level for construction of the Congress Street (now Eisenhower) Expressway at the same time. The CA&E stopped running passenger service on July 3, 1957. So I agree with the general date of 1952-53.

"Home closed on September 20, 1953. Home was not yet in the way of the construction project but was closed due to its low patronage to speed up service on the Garfield Line, which had slowed due to a temporary grade-level trackage along Van Buren between Sacramento and Aberdeen with multiple street crossings."
Home Ave is the station we see in the distance at the 9 minute mark. Hard to define the date, because although the station was closed we do not know the demolition date.

Another date..."On September 14, 1952, Hannah station closed due to its low patronage and to speed up service on the Garfield Line. At that time, Harlem, the next station east, changed from being an "A" station to a "AB" station in the A/B skip stop pattern."
You can barely see the Hannah Ave platform behind the crossing of the BOCT. Hard to see it, but it is there.

September 20, 1953 was the date that CA&E service was cut back from Wells Street Station to Forest Park, so anything left east of that point was CTA service.

Fun to watch but this is not 1957, In fact it seems to be clips from different years. I did not see one automobile newer than about 1952

I try to spot the license plates. Most looked orange which (if not in PA) would date the film to 1952 in IL. Originally I thought they might be 57's which were white on red in IL - and the color film might be making them appear orange.

This should be titled "Chicago's North Suburbs" as little footage is from the inner-city.

😄Yeah, Either that or "Watch how the trains pass each other"...The nostalgia was great but I was expecting to see something I could resonate with like the "EL".

All of the CAE servicing and storing going on at Laramie Ave. So neat. Absolutely nothing of importance at Laramie Ave and Harrison nowadays.

That C&NW train dates the video to 1955 or earlier - that was the year that the UP passenger service switched from the C&NW to Milwaukee rails.on October 30, 1955.

Alright, I'm going to declare this location solved. 6:44 is the curve near Sacramento Ave on the Garfield Park El. The new metal structure is the curving ramping up from the temporary street level trackage along Van Buren St that is going to put the elevated out of service between Sacramento and Aberdeen Ave.
A photo to go along with the caption below. thetrolleydodger.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/pict730.jpg
A CA&E train at the Sacramento curve on the Garfield Park “L”. You can see that construction is already underway at left on a ramp that will connect with the temporary trackage in Van Buren Street, which was used from 1953-58 (but not by the interurban, which cut back service to Forest Park). Since the ramp went to the east, it follows that we are looking to the southeast in this view. The area to the right of the ramp is where the new Congress Expressway was to be built. This picture was probably taken circa 1952. George Foelschow: ” The view is looking northeast, presumably from the Sacramento station platform, not southeast.”
