My uncle showed me and my older brother this place in the 90s. I was at least 5 or 6 years old... He passed away a month ago... He went into cardiac arrest ON HIS WAY TO PICK UP MAXWELLS ON 79TH. . he was the coolest uncle ever. Died way too soon. Rest in peace my tio fredo "floyd" torres ❤

As a kid back in the 80s I remember my father waking us up at 5:00am and making our way to JEWTowN. That’s what they called it if I remember correctly! Loved the food and cheap things you could purchase at reasonable prices. It was a way of life for us growing up. Miss it

I still remember the first time I went there with my Dad. A street vendor asked if he'd like to buy a watch, then pulled up his right sleeve to display about 10 watches from his wrist up to his elbow. Dad passed on the deal and I had a good laugh. Now, Dad is gone and both he and Maxwell street are only memories.

Color ttv was 5 years old. 6 TV channels, Bias ply tires that lased 25 k miles. Car engines got rebuilt at 70k miles. But, the sunday tribune was 25 cents.

I was born and raised on Taylor Street years ago I still love going down jewtown to buy clothes or stuff I needed and have my suits tailored upstairs from the Chinese guys .. you can buy just about anything in town years ago anything..... It's all changed now the UIC took over I missed the olden days on Taylor Street it was so nice back then.. all of these videos bring back a lot of memories thank you so much and keep it up with those videos.. I was wondering if you had any videos on Taylor Street back in the sixties or '50s?
Hey Mike---I was born and raised on Taylor St. too, during the 50s and 60s. I went to Andrew Jackson grammar school (by Sheridan Park) and lived on Racine near Mother Cabrini Hospital (where I was born). I remember that Maxwell St was the only stores open on Sunday and we would go and hang out every Sunday morning. It's nice to see these old films.

The market and the entire area was destroyed the expansion of University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). In the 90s, the Maxwell Street Market was moved by the City of Chicago to accommodate even more expansion of UIC.
This all started in the 60s when Mayor Daley ruined the entire near west side and forcefully relocated tons of working class people, many being African Americans into low income project housing so they could build a modern campus for wealthy white people. The modern campus of UIC stands ontop of what used to be a thriving working class neighborhood just west of downtown

My friend's dad sold produce on Maxwell St. in the mid- '60s. We would go with him in his large truck and help set up. He paid some "block guy" for the spot. We would go most of the summer. I never remember any fine artwork being sold there at all, but I do remember the musicians and the guys walking around with watches on the inside of their suit coats. It was wild.

Grew up on 24th and Princeton. I was only there for the mid 90s Maxwell street. But my Grandfather was a yellow cab driver. He was on level with a beat cop with street life...
One time I went to Maxwell St. With a buddy who was looking for a car stereo and thought he could haggle for a good price. I told him that he better be ready to pay the asking price because things are are already cheap. After about 45 minutes the guy he was talking to and finally caved and sold one for $50 that he was asking $125 because he got tired of the back and forth.
This would make a great Colt 45 Malt Liquour commercial. Some of their best customers are seen in this video dressed for a night out on the town
