Our mechanics steam all the bus engines every year for state police inspections.. the diesels are always pretty nasty. So interesting to watch you guys figure all that out.. love to see the little out there learning
@@kellysherrill4224They steam them so they can get past the DOT safety inspection,no leaks allowed so they are cleaning them and rinn8ngbthem thru every year in leubof fixing the leaks since most are minor anyway.
Great to watch, as always. I've always been fascinated watching professionals, work. I used to live right near the docks, (Liverpool), as a child, there was very little in the way of entertainment during my childhood, (second world war). I used to spend a lot of time, watching the dockers, loading merchant ships with goods, for foreign lands. I'm 80 now, and still love to watch, really interesting, innovative professionals, such as Jessie, do incredible work. Always a highlight of my viewing experience. 👍
The slide out skid is a lot of work but it’s also kinda a pretty neat concept. Especially on heavy equipment where like you said , some things are literally just not accessible. This was really awesome to watch. Jesse , you did awesome at filming and you got good friends too. Thanks to all 3 of you guys. (Seth from North Carolina )
Yeah neat concept to have the complete drivetrain slide out, allows for a really dense solid welded frame. But in reality its still alot of work to get to that point, and pulled out you still cant just take off the oilpan. Todays telehandler all have the engine mounted more accessable on the side of the frame opposite from the cab.
Looks pretty straightforward providing you have a huge warehouse sized workshop, and massive crane, giant excavator, skid steer and a couple of dedicated helpers :-)
Jesse , Ive followed you for years and I knew that you would absolutely be working on equipment in the new shop before it’s finished. You have done amazing things “in the elements” and now you have officially stepped your game up. It’s gotta feel good.
I am the old man who lives in alaska, worked as a heavy duty mechanic. To address the pump and where its leaking, there are metal shavings, yet not uncommon to find. They are coming from something but drawing a line in the sand, I would use a gasket maker like the one mentioned as I now can't remember what you said.. yeah my memory is so bad that sometimes feel like I might need to write my name on stuff to remember that also. Ah, right stuff has been my go to for ever. Now that you find metal and its coming from something you can always fix later... leave it alone and it may or may not ever rear its head. Its a old machine with wiring that is just as old and should get at least some attention. Fix the obvious issue of rings, not sure if you are going with new pistons, liners and rings but its your call. Money dictates what your choices are and so saving money that might afford you a porta power or winch for this shop is a better idea for the time being. Seeing a problem with those cast iron manifolds makes me ask you about you using a header system like they do in vehicles. Steel can conform a lot easier. I did not see a turbo on it so if all it does is exhaust smoke, then it might be a option for you. I know from experience about drains and there being a issue with complying with clean water. I believe its easier to shovel up a mess than take on the EPA later. I was grandfathered in my shop but that made my shop unsellable as they required any new owner to comply.
It was funny watching you working because I could see little boys through the openings and gaps of the machine. I guess they were close by hanging out with Dad.

I think you should make your own parts for this. It would be less hassle and less time consuming and you would have the parts at your hands rather than having to wait. You are very talented and you know exactly what you’re doing. I love your videos. You’re right when you say they don’t make parts like they used to. No they don’t. Especially on vehicles.

Jesse, you meant ask the questi in a couple videos about where you should put the air compressor I would say put the air compressor outside and soundproof it, so you don't have the air compressor cabsolutely hearing it when it Kix in and put it automatic drain on it. Turn those bolts around for reinstall. Someone put them in reverse last time. I have that same Makita. It's a beast and I use it almost daily. Man you do great work. My favorite channel for sure!
Getting the lower cost 1" hose from NAPA was such a time saver and cost saver. Living in the area you do is so efficient compared to around here out west, plus getting such good deals on such used equipment you desperately need. Such heavy lift equipment is very necessary for working on heavy equipment. For me with a skid steer moving that sliding unit outside would lower the amount of work and contamination.
That machine is handy as the pocket on a shirt as my father used to say. I'm glad you're fixing it up because you'll probably use it until your boys inherit it. Wild and highly entertaining video, Jesse. Keep up the good work. BTW, Pat is becoming an excellent presenter in your videos.

Awesome work Jesse. Not a solution here but noticed the rockers were pretty sloppy on a few cylinders. I have John Deere skid steer that would give me fits missing on a cylinder because those rockers would rattle out of adjustment. Your kickin ass and taking names keep up the good work.
I would use some anaerobic gasket sealant on that pump/transmission surface. Doesn’t seem like there’s any pressure behind it but just some seepage. Great video and as usual- you make another massive project look easy!

Wow, yet another massive project and undertaking. You most certainly don't mess around and jump straight into it. I hope Paddy isn't still out in the shop working under candlelight with his magic scraper. The ring cap is huge. When you consider the combustion the pressure and produced gases, you must be down on power massively and not to mention the blow by into the sump, etc. I'd agree that it's definitely a previous 3pm Friday job and some mechanic threw in the wrong size rings. Can't quantify how they're worn that much where they are missing around 5.0mm of material. Keep up the great work, Jesse & Paddy

When you buy new "power-packs", (piston, rings and liners) the rings come pre-set. You quoted a minimum spec of .013" and that is way too small. If the gap is too small you will end up breaking rings. If you check online, many complain that the ring end gap on Deere diesel was found to be .100", is common from the factory. There are charts to tell what is proper. On Cummins they recommend a minimum of .015" and a max of .028". Also, make sure that during your installation, the ring staggering on the piston is every 120 degrees on the piston to prevent blow-by. If an engine is boosted the ring gap has to be greater. I would set the ring at max to insure no ring breakage. As long as the 120 degree method is maintained it will not have excessive blow-by. Finally, I would send that injection pump out to Area Diesel and get it rebuilt. Best of luck. C&C Equipment is a good source for info. They rebuild and restore most brands of HD diesel.

PUT THAT UNDER MACHINE, WRAP 2X4 AND STAPLE PLASTIC TO 2X4 TO CREATE A BORDER TO CONTAIN MESS, AND WATER, LEAVE IT OPEN AT SHOP DOOR, AND YOU CAN SWEEP MESS RIGHT INTO SKID STEER BUCKET, AND DUMP WHEREVER YOU WANT IT. CLEAR PACKING TAPE TAPES THAT PLASTIC TOGETHER PRETTY GOOD FOR MAKING BIGGER SHEETS, YOU COULD EVEN PUT PLASTIC WALLS ON SIDES TO CONTAIN SPLATTER. ON MOTOR, MIC PISTONS, AND USE BORE GUAGE TO MAKE SURE BORES CORRECT SIZE FOR PISTONS.BORE SNAP GUAGES ARE PRETTY ACCURATE, AND CHEAPER THAN BORE GUAGE, JUST PUT IN BORE, SET LOCK AT MAX DIAMETER AND YOU CAN MEASURE IT WITH YOUR MIC.

Hello Jesse. I am five days late seeing this video. If I was as close as you are, I would find out more about the engine and look for a better mechanics book. Too many things have been left out. While you are there, why not? Have good days!
OTC makes engine stands for HD diesel engines but they are very expensive. Most, if not all of the HD diesel engines I have rebuilt use the OTC side mount set up. I would also cut that welded-in frame mount out and fab it to a bolt-in. That way you would be able to do an in-frame overhaul on the engine in the future and would not have to pull the entire engine/trans slider out to work on it.
I see no point in modifying the frame mount. Jesse does not use the telehandler all-day, every-day for a living. He just uses it occasionally in a concentrated time for 10-20 hours here and there. A proper engine rebuild will easily outlast the rest of the machine as well as his own expiration date.
Jesse, i have a business idea.... once you get your shop finished ( hopefully with a overhead crane) .... start a heavy equipment maint service. You can create an outside pressure washing station, and once its clean, you can drive into the shop to start the maintenance whatever it needs ( basic tune up to major repairs) 😉. And, once everything is fixed, be able to sand blast the rust and give these girls some yellow paint. You seem to enjoy that type of work and i bet in your area there are people needing that help cause they don't have the equipment , tools or skills like you do. Advertise what your crew can do for a fair price. 👍

I think with a proper gantry it would be easier.

They may have put the bolts in that way around because they were bottoming out on the counter weight plate.

I think maybe the builder had a little bit to do with it.
When you buy new "power-packs", (piston, rings and liners) the rings come pre-set. You quoted a minimum spec of .013" and that is way too small. If the gap is too small you will end up breaking rings. If you check online, many complain that the ring end gap on Deere diesel was found to be .100", is common from the factory. There are charts to tell what is proper. On Cummins they recommend a minimum of .015" and a max of .028". Also, make sure that during your installation, the ring staggering on the piston is every 120 degrees on the piston to prevent blow-by. If an engine is boosted the ring gap has to be greater. I would set the ring at max to insure no ring breakage. As long as the 120 degree method is maintained it will not have excessive blow-by. Finally, I would send that injection pump out to Area Diesel and get it rebuilt. Best of luck. C&C Equipment is a good source for info. They rebuild and restore most brands of HD diesel.

PUT THAT UNDER MACHINE, WRAP 2X4 AND STAPLE PLASTIC TO 2X4 TO CREATE A BORDER TO CONTAIN MESS, AND WATER, LEAVE IT OPEN AT SHOP DOOR, AND YOU CAN SWEEP MESS RIGHT INTO SKID STEER BUCKET, AND DUMP WHEREVER YOU WANT IT. CLEAR PACKING TAPE TAPES THAT PLASTIC TOGETHER PRETTY GOOD FOR MAKING BIGGER SHEETS, YOU COULD EVEN PUT PLASTIC WALLS ON SIDES TO CONTAIN SPLATTER.
ON MOTOR, MIC PISTONS, AND USE BORE GUAGE TO MAKE SURE BORES CORRECT SIZE FOR PISTONS.BORE SNAP GUAGES ARE PRETTY ACCURATE, AND CHEAPER THAN BORE GUAGE, JUST PUT IN BORE, SET LOCK AT MAX DIAMETER AND YOU CAN MEASURE IT WITH YOUR MIC.

Jesse, there is a square oring that goes between the pump and housing to deal the pump and housing.
Jesse, with all you will be doing, I would put a seal on the splined shaft. Much more assured solution, and with it torn down this far, that would be good insurance. Just my opinion. Thanks for a great video.

I'd think that outer recess groove around the pump housing is a place for a flat O-ring seal to go and somebody just forgot to put one in.

I agree. I’ve pulled many pumps while working in a hydraulic shop and not all , but many of them had o-rings there.
If it’s accessible after the skid is back in place I would probably try some gasket maker.
I guess the side that would be pushing against/ into an O ring would also b machined so as not to damage the ring. Another clue to look for perhaps?

Hello Jesse. I am five days late seeing this video. If I was as close as you are, I would find out more about the engine and look for a better mechanics book. Too many things have been left out. While you are there, why not? Have good days!
OTC makes engine stands for HD diesel engines but they are very expensive. Most, if not all of the HD diesel engines I have rebuilt use the OTC side mount set up. I would also cut that welded-in frame mount out and fab it to a bolt-in. That way you would be able to do an in-frame overhaul on the engine in the future and would not have to pull the entire engine/trans slider out to work on it.
I see no point in modifying the frame mount. Jesse does not use the telehandler all-day, every-day for a living. He just uses it occasionally in a concentrated time for 10-20 hours here and there. A proper engine rebuild will easily outlast the rest of the machine as well as his own expiration date.
Jesse, i have a business idea.... once you get your shop finished ( hopefully with a overhead crane) .... start a heavy equipment maint service. You can create an outside pressure washing station, and once its clean, you can drive into the shop to start the maintenance whatever it needs ( basic tune up to major repairs) 😉. And, once everything is fixed, be able to sand blast the rust and give these girls some yellow paint. You seem to enjoy that type of work and i bet in your area there are people needing that help cause they don't have the equipment , tools or skills like you do. Advertise what your crew can do for a fair price. 👍
@-XtraCredit- yea I dont really like the idea of having alot of people coming and going unless I know them pretty well. maybe when the kids are older. but there are some wackos out there
