  • MotionSavvy, the San Francisco startup working on tech to help the deaf communicate, has launched an Indiegogo campaign to commercialize its first product, UNI. The UNI app works with Leap Motion technology to translate each sign from American Sign Language into audible words on a tablet. Sarah Buhr gets an inside look at MotionSavvy's new product.

My godson is visually impaired, all three of his paternal aunts are deaf, this app is exactly something that would break down the communication barrier! Awesome!!

@@mohammadsolaiman9579 Hi! I 'm from Mexico, we are trying to do kind of this traductor using Unity and Leap Motion, but we couldn't have any advances than just recognizing the hand model, did you find some way to do it? Thanks

This is really amazing technology! I'm wondering if there are uses for Deaf kids and parents to use this to learn together? Can there be translation? For example, I teach Deaf kids and we use ASL, but their parents don't speak English. Can it do ASL to Spanish or ASL to written Vietnamese? On a different note, I do think that the interviewer really needed to have done more research before talking to this company. Many of the questions that she asked and information that she shared....well it was wrong. American Sign Language and British Sign Language are not "slight" variations! They are completely different languages.

I have a feeling that it would only work if the signer used SEE or contact English. That is to say, if someone signed ASL, the computer wouldn't recognized what the message was a lot of the time. Questions are made with facial expression. Many ASL sentences omit words that are often used in English and the order can be completely different than English. With google translate of spoken languages, sometimes the translations are completely unintelligible. I can see this working if a deaf person signed English word order and used other signs that would be conducive to English syntax, but only some of the time. Interesting concept, however. In reality, however, the deaf person would have much more control using a text to voice app. Bilingualism is essential at any rate if a deaf person wants to email, read closed caption, text, read books or even fingerspell words which are English words. I understand the desire to use ASL to communicate, but there is no magic app.

Yeah, I'm wondering how it processes syntax, since true ASL is so different from English.

That's why ASL is stupid and we need a new sign language, which doesn't depend on facial expressions and actual movement. It can be simple signs with the hand using only one hand. Also, the new sign language can be based on something like Lojban. A sophisticated artificial intelligence system can interpret ASL, anyhoo, but ASL seems to waste energy using facial expressions and movement and looks too involved, bordering on obsessive compulsive disorder.

There's so much you can do with one hand and no gestures. On the other hand (sigh), I would remove facial expressions.

    • @Commonsensor

Okay... why don't you create an app with all the functions ASL or any other sign language requiere?

  • @ninchakii1725

This is just a lazy excuse to not learn sign language to communicate back to someone, yes it's effective but it should be temporary.
