Human bodies are huge machines with a lot of parts that are constantly decaying. We can prolong life by swapping nearly any vital organ with a machine, but living 600 years while being tied to a lung-replacing machine is torture. As Dr Levine said, we should first combat the earliest signs of decay, and longevity will probably come with it.
Is it possible to maintain a healthspan of life until the end of life? I am an occupational therapist, and I am at late 50. I am experimenting to live with healthy lifestyle, basically eat health, maintaining very active in sports, maintaining a good family life, maintaining a very positive social circle, work positively with a balance between work and life, going for exploratory trips, going for competitive game etc. Hope that I can make it.
Why are we always trying to prolong and extend life? I agree that we should be trying to extend the healthy period of our lives for as long as possible; but I think all these aging diseases are a sign that we’re simply living wayyyy too long these days. If you look back into deep time early humans were extremely lucky to make it to even 40. 50 was old age, and 60 and 70 were nearly unheard of. Im not entirely sure we’re doing anyone any favors by trying to live longer. I don’t really think that’s the way it’s supposed to be, but we (especially in the west) are incredibly arrogant and tainted by this notion that life is precious etc. In our arrogance, we forget that we too are animals and part of nature and the natural cycle. We’ve done an unbelievable job of messing up the natural order of things because of our arrogance, selfishness and discomfort with death. Call me a cynic, but I don’t think how long we are living today is natural at all.

She does provide information? Research shows prolonging life in healthy ways, so what you mention here, also decreases the time spent from when mobidity starts to the end of your life. So increasing quality of life through various means, decreases a life with various diseases and health conditions. To me that is pretty eye-opening because it means something you might not count as part of prolonging life, actually does - like getting glasses when you need them. It could also be social gatherings - but a con could be the inclusion of alcohol, it means lowering risk of stress, but if that means lowering your income it also contains risks to your health and lifespan. increasing your ability to learn and prolonging learning through life. For how short the video is, it really made me think hard about how we go about increasing a healthy life.
That's fine but we'd have to control population growth if it happened. People can't be living that long then having 8 kids that also live that long, the world will collapse even faster than it currently is. But how do you control that? 500 year life spans is very much a case of just because we can, should we.
Death gives our life meaning. To know that our time is short, our days are numbered. It clears out the old and makes way for the new. People have a tendency to become change-averse as they grow older. Imagine becoming worse in your character and behaviour and still getting to live longer and making life unbearable for the younger generation. Death is as natural as life is.

The one who can run each morning, traveling somewhere far, climbing mountain or diving to ocean, etc. I can still do the work (hopefully meaningful work to society), albeit very very limited both in time and energy and focus. That being said, I respectfully disagree with Dr. Morgan Levine opinion (?) who think that it is better to have quite long healthy life, then at almost at the end of our life, we start to have serious illness that eventually cause our death. I, myself believe that due to my current condition and able to adapt to live, I can truly feel blessed to be alive. My illness caused me to be more aware to my social circle, which priority that I need to pay attention first, and more importantly much more grateful for the time that I have. I feared (again, this is just my opinion) that if Dr. Morgan opinion and research truly works and the only time people have the disease is during at the end of their life, they are not truly feel alive. Day by day goes by like an automatic machine, working 9-5, constantly observing the internet, or any automatic things that we did during the day, and at the end of our death bed, we regret with how much time that we spend as "junk time". In my opinion, it is much better to as soon as possible to realize and truly feel alive, which sadly (usually) reminded to us via the illness or disease or any discomfort in our body and mind. We seem to have no trouble getting everyone sick. Just feed them a western diet. Wanna help them live longer? Leave them alone. But no we can never reach everyone. That's a pipe dream.
Modern medicine has done a pretty good job at increasing lifespan, but healthspan not so much. Living longer, while being sick longer and disabled isn't an attractive prospect at all. Basically, the aim should not be to stave off death for as long as possible per se, but to preserve disease free youth, mobility and function without pain. Living eighty healthy years and then dying suddenly and painlessly would be a far better bet than living up to a hundred or beyond with an increase in chronic illness and disability. Imagine a world filled with two hundred year olds with dementia. Would living that extra hundred plus years really be worth it if so much time is spent sick? We have to figure out what makes super centenarians live not only long lives but relatively disease-free lives as well and apply those findings to the rest of the less "genetically privileged" I guess you could say. I want to see humans staying healthy and young for much longer and to do that we need to address ageing as if it were the mother of disease, not just something to be accepted as is. Because a lot of these problems are a direct consequence of ageing, or perhaps ageing more poorly than a few lucky ones.

If I'm still alive and healthy in...... 75 years and ofc if I happen across this video again (doubt it) or if by chance I die and live again remembering my password on this account, I'll reply or comment here again. Cause why not.
We have no choice in this matter.
I mean you can still reduce the risk of getting diseases or injured
Delay dying, what a concept. Now I’m closer to death. I just wasted 3:49 seconds on this video.
I actually disagree with this notion that therapeutics is only for the rich. As gene therapy is scaling it will become very cheap. It's a disrupting technology and the price is dropping like a rock. In 2030 you probably can get gene therapy for a very low amount of money. And yes I know it might still be too much for a poor family in Africa or such but they have a whole other set of issues to solve before this issue. And no matter which solution we chose it will require money
we are already immortal
thanks
Delusion is not helpful.
@@mowthpeece1 you right. That’s why I studied the topic. And still I am.
@@mowthpeece1delusion actually is helpful. the placebo effect has been proven to be worth noting.
Exactly... Ideally, you have a lovely day on a beautiful shore, listening to the breeze, and go to sleep tired but happy. Then you die in your sleep, leaving millions of dollars for your remaining LOVED and LOVING friends. Oh, and I just had an idea, free healthcare for everyone in the USA, like every other country in the world... Hmmm... Deep Questions! lol
Aj Applegate is truly multi-talented
when I realized the limitations of my flesh i was disgusted, I cast aside that mortal shell and cast my soul into the necrotect construction. Immortal and pure I became.
Eat a plant based diet.
Delaying?
No answers in the video...
genes are important . example two sisters one is 100y old another in 99 first in 1945 escaped to usa from russian ocupation worked as dentist .. eating good food.. another was working under russian occupation in Latvia in colective farms milking covs by hands and doing hard phizical work..
This video was a bit useless
If you read this comment before watching the video, don't bother watching it.
Huh? Interesting topic but this video had absolutely no substance
World is already overpopulated lol
pointless video
Lift heavy weights.
Another utterly nonsensical video about lengthening the lifespan on a rapidly decaying planet, ecologically, politically, societally and climatically speaking? _Clearly, "Big Think" doesn't think as big as it should._
*2/10 - Must try harder.*
Just because there are lots of problems in the world, doesn't mean we shouldn't pursue a better life for people on the planet already. Often times research on one field of science leads to innovations in other fields or the uses of new knowledge can be applied elsewhere. in general I think limiting what scientists and educators should focus on is not that helpful.
@@Munchausenification Nowhere did I mention placing limitations upon scientific research, ergo your words do not fit in my mouth. Furthermore, "A better life"? (quote) _"on a rapidly decaying planet, ecologically, politically, societally and climatically speaking?"_ by simply extending lifespan? Think before you type lest you reveal more about your shortcomings than you would otherwise wish to.
In conclusion, yours was a weak effort, try a softer target in future, or, you know, grow up and move on from the impotent futility of attempting to change peoples minds online while hiding behind the cowardice of anonymity.
@@meh3247 Well I didn't try to change your mind, it was more for other people. I didn't address you in the slightest so it is not me "putting words in your mouth", just a counter to your opinion. I shouldn't have to explain this, but here we are.

You're second.
Stupid title. I clicked on this expecting it to be about cryonics.
another repost
"Delaying Death?"
Absolute fallacy!
Millionaires and billionaires would all live long, healthy lives if this was remotely possible!
You're assuming money buys self discipline. It does not. You can't buy longevity if you trash yourself. The population you should look at are celebrities, not the rich. They actually care about their looks, and longevity. Do they live longer healthy lives? The ones that actually try, like Cher? Clint Eastwood? Betty White?

Why delay it?
