  • A"Mes non-contact digital thermometer with 20 to 1 ratio. Not a bad unit with an appropriate spot ratio for the high temperatures it reads, and has a nice Easy-to-Read inverse screen with adjustable emissivity. And has a nice star pattern laser but it is a little bulky and does not have an easy to use min-max.

Of all the use cases I'm really glad you touched on forging applications, that's why I bought mine, was hoping it would apply

Looks like the higher end Ames is most accurate. What I want to use for is to measure rock temperature when surveying for rattlesnakes. Snakes thermregulate, so be interesting to see what heat they will tolerate when basking on rocks.

Couple of points. You can buy much higher ratio IR thermos (30:1, 60:1, etc.) if you plan on measuring larger distances or smaller objects. If you want higher accuracy, generally you're better of going with a FLIR style thermal camera type thermometer, though they're not cheap ($200+). Also, if you want the Ames...wait for a sale, they can be had for less than $54.99 (got mine for $29.99).

Polished stainless steel emissivity is about 0.20 - adjust that and they should read much closer to the contact probe thermometer.

The Owner's Manual has a small mistake. It says press and hold the "SEL" button to adjust emissivity. It should refer to the "SET" button. Good review. Thank you.

I was wondering how familiar you are with a Ames Infared Thermometer to temp a hot griddle to see where the temperature is, it is rolled steel grill. what i'm really trying to figure out what is the correct Emissivity setting should be,

I use both Ames and I have the Fluke as well. All 3 measure air temp exactly the same. So for $16 the cheaper Ames was a bargain. I just needed to invade I have to double check or question the tool.

ALL infrared laser temperature gauge always fails to give you an accurate reading on a shiny surface because of the reflective material. If you were to spray paint it with a flat black high-temperature paint you will get an accurate reading every time.

Is that the Catus’ knee that we see in the video from time to time? Is he squatting while doing these videos? I’m so confused about how he shoots these. Ps. Love the videos. Knees just confuse me.
