I am a professor in Asian American Studies and did my phd in ethnomusicology. I am currently teaching a Filipino American History class in San Francisco City College and I used this video fo display Fil-Am nationalism. Nationalism can be expressed in many languages, music being only one of them and Hip hop is just a medium of many musical genres to express that nationalism. I found the video very moving when I first stumbled onto it and it offers important critiques of post colonial identity
I choose to believe you are absolutely right maganda babae . 😊 Awesome song it gets me everytime ! The sad part about it, is when I show this to your people & they just don't embrace it . They're too americanized ! So 😢👎
haha. actually the guy at the end of the video is Heber Bartolome. He's the original singer & songwriter of the song that we sampled from (Tayo'y Mga Pinoy). He gave us permission to sample his song & blessed us with the honor of making a cameo in our video.
Thanks to whoever did this. Although some of you can't speak the Filipino language, you sure represent the spirit of the Filipino warrior blood. The Maharlika blood.
Ten years later....they were rapping about this before social media blew up. Before it became cool and hip to be an activist. 10 years And still relevant. Underrated song of revolutionary hip hop. Man I’m in NYC now and I just wanna meet all these guys and talk about our people man.
This showed up again on my feed. I actually worked with these guys on their second album. I look back and would love to make beats for them one last time, if we were to never make hip hop music again.
and for the record, the song samples "tayo'y mga pinoy" by Heber Bartolome. Sir Heber is a noted musician who is as proud of his Pilipino heritage as they come. He not only gave us permission to sample his song, but he praised us for the final product. The reason is, he saw passed the medium & focused on the message.
Whoever is giving you guys crap for this video...don't worry about him. In order to solve problems in our community, it's important to address the issues that are prevalent. Recognizing the problems are the first step, and I feel this song does a great job of making people aware of the problems facing our people. This song could serve as the first step to opening many young Pinoy/Pinay minds. Keep it up guys!
I also wanted to add that even though I'm not a Filipina I'm proud to have been a part of this video. I've been a huge fan of DF and I know that this means so much to you guys. And congrats on making a song that stays true to who you are and what you stand for. I've always been a fan and supporter of your talent and struggle, and I want you to know that I will continue to support you in the future. Even though I don't hail from the Philippines I still know good hip-hop when I hear it! :)
why am i the most non-hip hop lookin fool in this video? haha for reals though, big ups to the DF fam for the opportunity to collab. everyone ripped it! and thanks for the francis m tribute. i'm sure he would be proud. mabuhay! -kiwi
First off, as a musician myself, I totally respect you guys and this song is amazing. Now, I'll admit a story, growing up, I wasn't sure I really wanted to embrace my parent's filipino roots. I wanted to be "american." As I got older, I truly got wiser and saw a lot of the things you guys mentioned in this song especially the part about our identities. But anyway, I now know where my parents came from and I am proud of them. When they are gone, my kids will know about my family.
much love to all the rappers here.,one love bros.,but for those who never been here? you need to see the P.I hiphop culture for what it really is.,I suggest you go back here and have a concert of some sort here.,like bambu and masta plann did last saturday.,i was there.,so you need to do the same bros.,we'll be there to show our support.,and also so you can know the true philippines not just from the news or internet
LOVE IT!!!! That' s Right!!! Ya'll represented. Made me wanna cry. Thank you for breakin' it down and telling the truth!!! "F" all the haters. Keep doin your thang brothas!!!
I feel ashamed i never heard about this song im 10 years late but hey better late than never right? This song is so underrated. Must have a millions of views!
I found this years back and still keep coming back. I grew up so close to the 69th st 7 stop, and I remember shopping at the phil am market. mabuhay pare.
Nover is not only a talented fighter, but a mad humble & cool dude. We'll always support him. he's the kind of dude you would want to keep rooting for. thanks for props!
This is the only album I ever picked up on iTunes. I can't even begin to explain how resonant it's been with me in my life Y'all need to do something with "Never Forget" though. That's the jam.
Love the track bros. Keep making that good music. You guys got talent. This is the next generation Filipino Anthem. What a great way to help open the eyes and ears of many Filipino Americans youths who overlook our heritage and are ashamed of where they came from. We got to know our history and appreciate what we've been given.
thanks. CJ & I were in the Philippines in January & that's how we were able to get some of the Philippines footage. However, most of the P.I. footage was shot by DF's own, Sawnd G.
Dope track, especially the last verse. My great grandfather is of Spanish heritage, and I grew up with the idea of being light skinned with a sharp nose was a blessing. However, as I got older I knew that wasn't the case, and this song proves it. Deep Foundation, Bambu, Kiwi, Geologic, and other Pinoy Emcee's out there keep this real. My bay area Pinoy posse and I will be looking forward to more of your tracks in the near future.
@Jayvizespana A young lawyer.. How amazing.. Just breath taking... Out of 90 000 000 of u guys, one actually becomes larger than life, a young lawyer... Marvelous...
Video and lyrics were hot. CJ, your verse hit home hardest, because going to the Philippines several times these past years, the one thing that's bothered me more than most is all the people in love with the skin-whitening, when so few people there look like that (outside of those koreans and chinese coming in). Like, 'who u trying to be', just be you, lol.
I loved the video!!! Doin it in HD was great, rhymes were tight, shots of Philippines, and all that was VERY well done! I appreciate how the struggles of Filipinos leave them a very strong, passionate, proud group of great people. Plus, I think Phillippe Nover is gonna make waves in the UFC lightweight division. I trust as he gets bigger, he'll keep biggin up DF!
This is a rap masterpiece to say the least. This is music you feel, not hear. If people felt music, there'd be alot of less shitty artists out there lol. Keep it real Boyz !!!! I FUCKIN love your beats.
hey deep im feelin the video keep doin ya thang homiesmuc luv and respect tonall ya in the video haha my cousin winfred and my friend roger eddy and cecil and wow i cant believe philipe nover is in here
Man Dont mind them haters theyre just jealous cause you made heber bartolome proud of you. plus the message of the song is inspiring and true, So Haters keep on hatin... :P
The original song is "Tayo'y Mga Pinoy" by Banyuhay Ni Heber. The man at the end of the video singing and playing the guitar is the original lead singer of the group.
Dro, I think some people get the mistaken impression that rappers are thugs (wonder why :p) but this video and the song are almost like spoken word. The message is so far beyond mainstream rap.
the name of the song is "Tayo'y Mga Pinoy" by Banyuhay Ni Heber the original singer/songwriter of the song, Heber Bartolome, makes an appearance at the end of the video. he's the dude playing the guitar.
good job guys..submit this video to the Pac camp as the entrance song for his upcoming closing fights...i saw APL Pineda of BEP perform Bebot at the Marquez Pac 2 fight in Vegas. It was dope..It would be great if you guys could perform this in vegas...let me know..

Most underrated, ethnic, revolutionary hip hop song ever made.
