For my earlier three finger picking lesson : www.talkingbas...
A couple of weeks ago I gave a little breakdown of Raining Blood by Slayer and showed you how avoiding the standard doubling of guitar riffs can work really well. I was also asked for a little more metal in the bass lessons.
So this week I’m going to give an example of the opposite effect of doubling a very frenetic riff in the shape of the greatest love song ever written: Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse.
Alex Webster is an awesome bass player with sick 3 finger picking chops. Hammer Smashed Face is a great example of how to apply that technique in a death metal setting.

-the phrygian, phrygian dominant, and the phrygian double harmonic modes
-chromatic tonality (particularly how it's used in metal)
      -the octatonic scale
-minor thirds, diminished fifths, and major sixths

Hi Mark! After 20+ years of playing guitar to a point where I'm not as good as I could be and not interested enough to get better, I picked up bass because I'm hooked on Funk - also because bass players are a dime a dozen, but really GOOD bass players are hard to find. I searched everywhere for tutorials on the techniques of funk/slap bass and found yours. Gotta say, I still suck but I have been able to craft some neat slap licks with some cool ghost note stuff in there too just form watching a few of your lessons and practicing the techniques. Would love to see more videos going over exercises slap player wannabes can use to improve accuracy, speed, and coordination. You videos are excellent so I know I will get a lot from them!

When people say Death metal is just noise for people who can't play their instruments properly Alex Webster is always the first person I bring up . He's a virtuoso , your average bass player can't just pick up one of his bass lines and get it right . He's super humble as well despite being well above and beyond most the level of most the his contemporaries .

My experience is, if you're gonna do the 3-finger gallop; you really should do it closer to the bridge. Reason being that if you're doing it in performance the soundguy will have your bass channel EQed a certain way; and if you pick that at the neck most of what the system will pick up (because you WILL be DI-boxed 90% of the time; meaning your amp tone will have no say in the matter) will be the "pops and clicks" of your finger hitting string, or string hitting neck. Picking closer to the bridge will minimize that; and give you more "note' than 'pop' in the output. It's a bit harder on the hand, but the sound will be better.

thank you for the "metal harmony" explanation. indeed. metal in it's composition is just as if they were looking for tensions that other genres seemingly avoid. also because if you want to take a deep dive into metal theory you kinda have to explain a lot of things with modal interchange, cromaticisms and what not. also, metal musicians don't break their heads that much with theory they just plug in what sounds cool and call it good (maybe save for the prog metal guys).BUT, when it comes to bassline creation for metal, you can use the same principle you use while soloing: the less notes the chord has, the more you can play around with scales and modes for example if you have an Eb5 playing in palm mutes you can plug in anything from Eb Aeolian to Eb minor pentatonic to harmonic minor to even a major mode like lydian (of course you must keep within the vibe the song has but still). but like you said following the guitar is usually a good idea in this genre. anyways. cheers, mate. great vid

I've also moved through several different pickup sets. Started with Ibanez stock, then EMG P J set and finally the Sims Super Quads you see now. You'll see how it was just by looking at a bunch of my older videos.
