she never won any significant movie awards even in Asia for 40+ years, so you can feel the thrill & joy for her suddenly soaring to the top, winning the Oscar.
Not really...because action movie has been out of trend in Asia, especially hongkong action movie which kinda like becoming worse and worse, no diversity and nee content. This makes she has to change her path from Hong-Kong to Hollywood, and yeah, gold will finally shines not matter what
I think Asian and general movie industry doesn't appreciate much on action movie actors. Michelle has transcended decades of acting, she's now not just purely an action movie star, but also an actress with range. Of course, some luck needed in this historic victory since this is a vote-based award, especially in Hollywood, it is not just skills alone that will take you to the top.
It took her 40+ years of hard work to finally shine on the biggest stage of the world. As a 40+ middle age uncle from Malaysia, I am truly inspired by her. Maybe it’s time to dream big again…
Actually the FIRST Asian to win an acting Oscar is Japanese actress Miyoshi Umeki in 1958 for the movie Sayonara; However, she won in the supporting category.
And she should mention it(the snub as being asian actor in US film industry) when she got the oscar..too bad she didnt... if she does, it might be as one of the monumental speech ever..
@@Lee-1You're just an uneducated and idiot Indonesian netizen full of jealousy. You knew nothing about the fact Michelle Yeoh was born in M'sia. Even her parents, siblings and relatives still living in M'sia until now. And in 1983 at the age of 20, she won the Miss Malaysia World contest. She rose to fame in the 1990s after moved to HK and starring in a series of HK action films. She grew up speaking Malay and English, but could not read or speak Cantonese very well. She is still a Malaysian citizen until now. Even Hong Kong actor Chapman To Man Chak has highlighted the fact that Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian. "A reminder to the Hong Kong government. Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian. Don't take advantage and claim she is a Hong Konger," he posted on Facebook on Monday (March 13).
Not a single question about how she got ready or her (clearly obvious) beauty. Actual questions about her talent and what this moment truly means to her and the community. Very wells deserved and definitely a long time coming.
Michelle and Brendan's wins were the ones that made me the happiest by far. Both were my action heroes growing up, I remember my family watched Crouching Tiger and The Mummy on repeat throughout my childhood, and it's magical to see them both achieve greatness together like this. And I love Cate Blanchett to bits, she's one of the greatest actors to ever live, and she will doubtless end up with 3 or even 4 Oscars by the time she's done. Anyone that's trying to rage over Michelle's win should really just take a chill pill, especially since Cate herself made it abundantly clear on the awards circuit leading up to the Oscars that she didn't want to campaign for a win this year. I think Cate herself realized the significance of this moment far better than the most rabid fans of her performance do. And at any rate, even if some people think Michelle wasn't better than Cate, no reasonable person will argue that Michelle was a distant second. If anything, she was right up there with Cate the whole way, and her win is as beautiful and perfect as anything that's ever happened at the Oscars.
I love both Michelle and Cate but if we’re being objective about looking at their performances, it feels like Michelle won because of sentiment. In that, these awards are really just a popularity contest. I wonder how another Asian actress can follow Michelle’s career. I’ve seen her mostly in martial arts movies, then Everywhere comes along. What would be great is for an Asian actress to do a film where the dialogue is not in English but the native language where the movie is from, and then win.
You have beautifully written this. Thank you for the words. Yes, she was not a distant second, and this award was necessary for the greater good and she rightfully won the oscar. Cate is humanitarian and she perfectly understands that her not winning is the actual win for all her admirers. Cate already knows, whatever role she is given, she WILL nail it and grab nominations everytime and probably would win the most oscars by the time she is done. Her contribution is unmatchable in cinema as well as theatre. As true artist she knows that she actually made far better contribution to the world than just winning another oscar.

Glad that Michelle won. She's luminous!!!! WELL EARNED!!! No matter who you are, you are already worthy. There's nothing to ask permission for. At your first breath, ......it was written. All we have to do is uncross our arms and walk towards your path. Carry on ya'll!!
She's been a badass for a long time. Films with Jackie Chan, James Bond, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (It's still mind boggling that she didn't win best supporting actress that year), etc. She also was a badass on Star Trek Discovery. There's nothing Michelle can't do because she's done it all!
This is a Great Actress awarded for giving a truly great performance. It is a historically significant landmark piece of work in so many ways. She is Legendary and so is her performance, now and forever.
Michelle you are such a global darling. There’s so much you offer people in general about existing on our planet. We are here, we are unique and in all this we get to just put out high vibes. You are so graceful and just gorgeous!!!
What a win, what a performance. Well deserved in so many ways. Peak performance and making history is a rare combination. All the love and warmth to her. She is the inspiration.❤️💐
What a long overdue. She could have done so much more if she was recognized and given fair opportunities long time ago. It might took a long time but im super glad Hollywood has finally caught up.
She speaks so well and so motivating. Especially when she answered two questions about minorities, actually speaks out the feeling of many people from the minority community including me. We always have the feeling that we don’t belong here. It shouldn’t be the case. We deserve to be heard, we deserve a seat at the table, we deserve to have a chance to proof ourselves we are worth it.
So very happy her mum gets to witness this. Janet Yeoh , her mum had Michelle Yeoh take the first step towards stardom by entering her for Miss Malaysia competition and boy oh boy did she have a 20/20 vision!!
This award for the wonderful Michelle Yeoh is well deserved and much overdue. Ms Yeoh is by far my favorite actress. She is smart, strong (mentally and physically), graceful, monumentally talented and more beautiful now that ever before. Sincere Congratulations.
The amazing part of her performance is how insanely complex it is to have an arch in a movie of this kind, with very little references to imitate and take as example. She is relatable and feels familiar, even in the midst of Kung fu fights, and changing universes, it stays consistent and a nuanced performance towards the end grounds it and hits very hard. There are few performers able to EVER to pull this off, it's really mind-blowing and emotionally affecting. Congratulations Michelle!!!
Well deserved. Thank you Tomorrow Never Dies for putting her on the map in the West. The Bond producers saw her talent and this win wasn’t tokenistic (like so many recent Oscar noms and wins). Yeoh deserved it.
Finally. We need more Asian representation. I'm crying so much. I'm happy to see it, so beautiful No I'm not Asian but my extended family is and when they succeed we all do
Beautiful sentiment. Couldn't agree more. Having your voice heard... being represented by those who share your culture... receiving fair opportunities. These are things we all desire, no matter what our background is.
Love her. I just wished they gave Angela Bassett her Oscar. She deserved it the first time and the second time. Michelle Yeoh definitely deserved to win just based on her amazing performance. Jamie Lee Curtis on the other hand had a good performance but to win an Oscar for that performance just was not fair. Her co-star Stephanie Hsu who plays Michelle's daughter in the movie actually deliveres a better performance.
A movie which is promoting love, understanding, filial piety, respect, humanity should be given a credits in the Oscar! It is a good encouragement for the future film makers to do something meaningful in future! For the betterment of the humankind!

As you can see Western is more open to diversity than... ... ... Where is opposite of west? Hur? 😅😉☺️ 🙏
So Asia did not recognize her talent, but America did. The glass ceiling is OTHER COUNTRIES.

Michelle should have already won an Oscar as in past tense for supporting actress for Crouching Tiger , Hidden Dragon back in 2000. 🐅🐉
