    This movie is my all time favorite. How does it change my life? Well, everytime I wake up I now can understand that life can be cruel with me, but if I sacrifice and fight for what I believe even if nobody believes in you, some day you will get what you deserve. This movie gave me "hope" to keep going in life. It touches my heart in such a way that very few movies have done it before (perhaps Schindler list). A truely Masterpiece.

    The title of this video made me do a double take: "Mark Kermode Pans Labyrinth"
    Really? Labyrinth was great! I'd have thought even Kermode would like it!

    When I first saw Pans Labyrinth I didn't expect to see what I saw.. and I walked out of the theater like i'd just gotten off a rollercoaster. It's such a beautiful touching film. Del Toro's finest work.

    Sometimes, especially during one of Mark's rants or eulogies, I wonder what is the point of Simon Mayo. This episode highlights why he's there - to affectionately keep Mark's feet on the ground. I love these two.

    Go see Pan's Labyrinth or have a beer.
    You could have both while watching it in a cinema that serves alcohol. 😂
    The times I saw it at the cinema (either 9 or 10 times) I always watched it with a glass of wine. 🍷👍
    The film is a masterpiece. My number 1 film of all time.

    Candidate for best film made, certainly the most artistic and beautiful piece I've ever seen. It re-energised my love for films, making me realise films are first and foremost the telling of a story. I agree with the idea if being able to sit through the onslaught of bad/average films, the knowledge that films like this are possible keeps me going to see them.

    I wanted the satisfaction of hearing Kermode give film of the week to a Bond film, and low and behold, Casino Royale gets reviewed the same week as a milestone like Pan's Labyrinth. Rotten luck cos most other weeks I'm sure it would've beaten the competition.

  • @LucieW123
    @LucieW123 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Personally, I think the only people who don't appreciate the film as much are people who do not understand/care for/appreciate the deeper meanings of film, cinema and genre. The film's cinematography is stunning and visually it is magical. All the deeper meanings of the film are incredibly meaningful, inspiring and almost enlightening. I won't carry on into too much detail to what they are but when Kermode said that the film had changed his life in a way, I could understand what he meant.

    @ellbo2 Having not seen a huge ammount from that year, there's not much else to choose from. You're right to mention The Departed, but there was also Red Road, Inland Empire, The Host, United 93, This Is England as well as documentaries like Jesus Camp. I'd even rate the likes of Little Miss Sunshine and Children Of Men as films I'd rather re-visit Pan's Labyrinth.

    Pity to see childish arguments breaking out even here. Anyhoo...
    I've been evangelising about this to my friends at uni far too much recently, I'm gonna have to show it to them. I reckon that what makes the horror and violence particularly striking is just how beautiful the aesthetic is; an ugly, coarse film just doesn't have the same effect. It's like how the monster's elegance in Alien makes it so unnerving.

    @pancakeday2006 Yeah I'm with you. The story left me completely cold, the main character was flat, and the whole thing was rather humorless (Yes, I know the setting was bleak, but even so.) Kermode goes as far as to say it's the best film of the decade. Really? Better than There Will Be Blood or City of God?

  • @stevindiesel
    @stevindiesel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have to say that 9 out of 10 times, I to largely agree with Mark’s views on movies (except perhaps for The Last Jedi, but that may be because he’s not a Star Wars fan?). The description of the movie would never make me want to watch it, but after being entranced by the Faun and the fairy eating monster, I had to watch it. GDT is incredible, and this arguably should have been a launchpad to EVEN greater things.
    How good would some Star Wars movies be with GDT at the helm!!?? (Possibly more about other creatures than just Stormtroopers fighting Jedi etc)

  • @sewing2165
    @sewing2165 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's "life changing" because the critic had seen a series of bad films and then saw this one. That's how it transformed his life!
    1). A series of mistakes followed by something that is not a mistake brings him joy so he heralds it "life changing"
    2). How many bad films did he see and what does it say about his judgement
    3). What kind of critique is this? I watched championship football before watching Swansea, therefore Swansea must be a great team!
    Can someone please give me a more compelling reason to watch the film as I hear (from others) it is very good.

  • @pancakeday2006

    It's not often that I disagree with Mark Kermode and generally regard him as THE leading British critic but, on this rare occassion, I don't share his praise of Pan's Labyrinth. A well made fantasy, certainily. But best film of that year? Definitely not.

    • @iluvatarchem

      Josh Allen I completely agree but that doesn't mean it is still a masterpiece. Time was harsh on Citizen Kane.
      Another example: Psycho was amazing too 50 years ago, but that doesn't mean it's still good. It is just an common horror flick by today's standards..
      It's just that some people put some things on a pedestal and aren't able to remove them no matter what. It's just sad:P

    I like Kermode and I respect his views and opinions but when he doesn't let anyone else have an opinion or just says "you're wrong", well, that's just ignorance and big-headedness. Any critic should be open to debate but, as seen here, he just brushes aside anything negative to be said about this film. It's poor and it gets rather annoying.
