We call it yagyopavit or janeu . Never heard anyone calling janoi . Anyway . Good to hear you again .

Yagnyopavit or janeu is a sacred thread. Wearing it and chanting Gayathri mantra and sandhya vandanam, piercing ears (accupressure) enhance the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a man. They learn to live a peaceful and balanced life.
For some "random guys" in the comment section, the student or brahmachari wears a 3 thread janeu and it will be upgraded to 9 threads during the wedding, for the man to start handling grihasti and other phases of life.
There is no choice and one must follow the rules and respect the yagnyopavit or janeu sanskar if it's in one's legacy!

I think those are just some threads which reminds a student what he should do.
It's completely on the child/student what he will do.
It's not compulsory to follow all those rules.
(It's my opinion)

Sir, why do boys only wear janoi? As everything you explained implies to women too right? Also why it has been such a big deal in Brahmins as the significance of Janoi suits the whole human civilization.

No Its only till period of brahmcharya..ie. Educational period which is upto 25 years of age.

Every region has their rules ... Maithil Brahmin do it before marriage specially in childhood

Upanayana (Janeu) generally takes place at the age of 8. After that 12 years of Brahmacharya (no lovey-dovey) is to be followed. After that another ceremony takes place called Samāvartana. After that you can get married and start lovey-dovey-ing.

By the way I had ceremony then also I rarely wears those stands and have a gf.
