The Constructicons suddenly get the drop on the desert-bound Grapple and Hoist. However, they claim to not be looking for a fight but instead looking to help in the Autobot cause. They prove their newfound loyalties by using their skills on Grapple's powerful solar energy-collection tower schematics. Grapple is thrilled at the opportunity, especially since Optimus turned it down earlier. The Constructicons are lying and Megatron plans to use the power tower for himself.

Optimus Prime is way too advanced, and has much higher priorites than to pay attention to primitive flesh creature phrases.

Optimus at least attempting to have fun is just something we need more often. Not to say I dislike him being more serious, but I just feel like it would be nice if he does goof around a little bit.
Also feel really bad for Grapple. An amazing idea and he couldn’t even enjoy it.

I think the Constructicons in this episode actually weren’t initially helping Hoist and Grapple under Megatron’s orders. I’m gonna take their side and say I think they may have actually been telling a half-truth and wanted a good use of their talents. One of the rare occurrences in the original series where it occurs to you that the Decepticons may not all be single-minded evil
My defense is the Constructicons had to be threatened into revealing a double-cross plan, and they seemed to genuinely enjoy building the tower (except for Longhaul).
Also couldn’t that tower, as powerful as it is, have ended the war single-handedly? I mean the whole war was fought because of a resource shortage on Cybertron, wasn’t it?
But Megatron is a mega-brat. If he can't have it all for himself, no one can.

@@willow9490 Which is sadly why the war lasted so long. Megatron is too prideful and Starscream is too greedy for peace, the former made even worse when he loses his sanity as Galvatron. There’s no way they would allow it unless they had complete control over it. Under different leadership, then you would probably be right and just a couple of these towers could mean energy for more than just the Transformers.
@@MasterArchfiend If I remember right, the reason for the war was unnamed except for "a falling out" between autobots and decepticons with energy loss being a major side effect since the war was unending and impossible to win. But of course nobody will ever win, they need episodes!
Yes, I too think that the Constructicons were sincere, at least until they found themselves on the wrong side of Megatron's fusion cannon: at that point they had to save their skins.
The Constructicons exists to build things, it's their reason to be and the solar tower project ignited their imagination, their creativity and the desire to be part of it to see it works.

But I always really liked this episode with how the constructicons took the initiative to trick Grapple and Hoist. But they were doing it in service to Megatron and the decepticon cause. Plus giving Grapple such an ego in this worked to show the autobots were not perfect heroes either. Even how the constructicons were getting Grapple to do some of the work for them while padding his ego was another nice touch.
Did anyone else think Scrapper was the leader or at least the spokesman for the constructicons? I don't know if it was ever established who was the leader of the group.
When they first introduced themselves, megatron addressed scrapper. And he introduced the others.
Scrapper was the leader, but not like a typical Decepticon ordering others around. They shared in their duties, which is kinda explained from their origin in ep. "Secret of Omega Supreme".
Scrapper is the leader. It is stated in his bio. Megatron chose him to be the leader because he is good at his job but is also modest. Hook is very good at his job too but Megatron didn't choose him because he is too arrogant.
Scrapper is the leader of the Constructicons while Hook is Second In Command.

Its cool to see that Autobots and Decepticons all have their own hobbies, like how the Constructicons were actually going to help them build it for fun, until they found out they where being spied on and then betrayed the Autobots Overall if there was no war they would be a good team.

Given that in this universe, the Autobots are relatively well known, he’d probably just call it a rough day and call insurance.
I'll tell you, by the end of this episode, I felt so bad for Grapple, he seemed genuineley excited for his project to be complete, the constructicons were real bullies for using him and Hoist.
i think the constructions wanted to really help but megatron found out so they had no choice but to betray them

So let me understand this: Perceptor is the autobot scientist. Ratchet and Wheeljack are the repairmen. Hoist and Grapple are the autobot inventors. When I was younger I thought they were all the same. But they each have a specific craft. They all seem to do their craft interchangeably.
well, in idw they kind of have this differ a little... Ratchet is mainly medic, Wheeljack is an inventor (as in actively making tools/weapons), Perceptor is a scientist who rather studies and understands things, and Hoist and Grapple are engineers who construct building-sized things. Wheeljack can make something large, but not necessarily a building. Hoist can patch up others, but he'll note they "have to make do with an engineer" (say, like someone who studied pharmacology, molecular medicine or biology instead of a practicing medical doctor)
they are basically tradesmen like I'm in a machine shop so I'm a machinist but someone in a welding shop being a welder we can do similar but not the same things exactly
Beachcomber is a geologist, huffer is a construction engineer, seaspray is a naval tactician and prowl is a defense strategist....
Ratchet is a medic who fixes other bots. While Wheeljack and Hoist sometimes help him, Wheejack is mainly an inventor. Hoist only does basic maintenance for other bots. If they got heavily injured, they need Ratchet. Hoist is an engineer.
In some of the stories grapple and hoist were part of the same group as the constructicons and before some became the constructicons
You know, grapple and hoist really should’ve been a little more distrustful of the Constructicons.
Their stupidity is probably why they don't make as many appearances.
It was a mix of all of Grapple's frustrations and his ego that I think made it easier for him to want to trust the constructicons. He's an architect of renown reduced to grease monkey by the war. And Optimus shooting down his tower project added to that frustration. Then the constructicons role up, heap flattery on him, and even give him enough energon to do the project. You're not wrong but it was easy for Grapple to get caught up in the belief they just admired his work so much they would put aside their differences to make something grand.
Grapple isn't much of a warrior, he was probably just happy to have someone to work with.

I don't get why Grapple got down about his tower. Optimus didn't disapprove of the tower itself, he was just being prudent due to the fact that the Decepticons could exploit it. And lo and behold, that's exactly what happened.

This episode and The Golden Lagoon were great episodes, especially by typical 80s standards. Poignant and, actually, kind of depressing.
Ah, well, this episode kinda karmas itself though. So many mixed feelings too. Also that bit about signing his work in giant letters has always kinda bugged me. It's not just the scientist, or the architect, it's... something else. Not quite right.
Now, Golden Lagoon, that was like an 80's movie or something. Very bleak. "We won?" Indeed, Beachcomber. I hear ya. (Top 5 personal episodes, probably, mostly Series 2 I think if not entirely.) How was that The Comedian responded to the question, "What the hell happened to the American dream?" "It came true. You're looking at it." It's like that.

i like to believe the constructicons were being completely legit with grapple and hoist when they offered to help build the solar tower, but turned only because megatron threatened them
then again, given what the robo smasher did to the constructicons in "the secret of omega supreme," it's more likely the betrayal was planned all along
then again again, the constructicons have three different, separate origin stories throughout the show so who really knows

@@Roycestiles then you've just screwed the affordability factor, and feasibility to produce them. they're being produced because MANY will buy, and when many are produced, the prices are more affordable (though the "affordable" prices today just make my head spin).

A hard lesson learnt for Grapple. Prime didn’t really disapprove of his proposal but only withheld it because Grapple missed the important point, how to prevent the Decepticons from exploiting his work. Grapple simply went ahead with his project without realising the consequences. In the end, though he was disappointed his solar tower was destroyed in the end, he found some consolation that his inventions worked. In the next few episodes, he made improvements in his architecture and did not make the same mistakes as he did in this episodes.

sometimes it's better to go to "magenta alert" instead of "red alert" because that way you don't have to change the bulb and it causes less confusion for Red Alert if he is in the vicinity.

Because Grapple disobeyed Prime's orders, the Decepticons almost managed to create a near-limitless source of energy -- something that would've meant almost certain defeat for the Autobots. At least Prime punishes disobedience in a humane fashion, and in a way that results in the disobedient bot actually learning a lesson. Megatron would've torn his soldiers limb-from-limb for pulling that kind of crap on him.

Grapple (and Hoist) knows his way through engineering skills than the Constructicons when it comes to building, Scavenger doesn't know how to weld, all it takes requires "temperature and timing" that's what Grapple told him. Well, except for Hauler, he could've use his extra help right about now!

Grapple was my 1st Transformers toy, but I found this episode sub-par as a teenager.
On a rewatch as an adult, I realized just how much the tower meant to him.

I forgot that Casey Kasem played the computer voice for both the Super Friends computer and the Transformers computer, Teletran One.
Listen - at 7:34, and 9:22, these are the only two times, in the American 80s G1 Transformers cartoon’s entire run, that Bonecrusher speaks in his proper voice (that voice is certainly a nod to his strength) [although he still mustn’t have had that much strength, given that the Constructicons formed Devastator, who’s even the only gestalt I like]. Interestingly, and, coincidentally, they’re both after Hook speaking, and both before (followed by Long Haul speaking). Oh, and gotta love Mixmaster’s line ‘Right here, buster! Stand aside!’, when he transforms to robot mode (virtually his best ever line, in the show’s entire run).

The Decepticons finally got their hands on an energy source which doesnt destroy the world or threatens to do so if mishandled, so why the Autobots dont build their own tower so it become a farming simulator for both? Endless Energy for Cybertron incoming!

I don't get it optimus prime didn't want the tower built on the basis that if it ever fell into megatron's hands it would be dangerous but he approved WheelJack's Dinobot project. (dinobots that almost killed optimus prime in one episode because megatron tricked them into thinking he was the enemy LOL) That's favouritism!
Because Prime learned from that past experience. After all, he is a leader and not a wizard of faith.

The Autobots could have built it near the Ark if Omega Supreme was protecting it, but Omega is not in the Season 2 story line till later.
@@dmonsef if so, they would probably need a lot of Earth's building materials to build the tower. And that would be a lot as demonstrated when the Constructicons raided the construction site of that construction guy.
It's because kids would buy dinobot toys and not solar power tower toys.

I think I watched this episode about 100 times since it was aired and the fight scene felt different. Maybe I am getting old or it was different :D
What I meant, by Bonecrusher not having that much strength, hence the Constructicons formed Devastator, is the point of these teams combining (I prefer the five individual Combaticons to the combined form of Bruticus, the five individual Stunticons to the combined form of Menasor, the five individual Predacons to the combined form of Predaking, the five individual Terrorcons to the combined form of Abominus, the five individual Aerialbots to the combined form of Superion, the five individual Protectobots to the combined form of Defensor and the five individual Technobots to the combined form of Computron) - these teams combined to become more powerful (as they were weaker on their own).
I’m aware I’ve posted, to videos of other Transformers episodes, uploaded by the same user as this one, why the Dinobots never combined - again, because there wasn’t any need / there was no need for them to combine, given that they were, already, merely equally as powerful on their own.

Why the writers decided to go with a hidden camera in a random rock at the 6:20 mark instead of just using one of Soundwave's cassettes, is odd...l mean how convenient that Megatron just happened to have a hidden camera in a rock right at that spot...and why did it suddenly activate right at that moment?? It's little unnecessary things like that that bug me.

I enjoyed this story. I believe Optimus Prime improved his leadership skills by observing parent animals taking care of their offspring. I believe his spirit animal is a wolf. Wolves are very protective of their cubs.
