Solo Beach Fishing with Weird Squid Fishing Rig

  • Graeme ventures out on a solo beach fishing expedition after getting some sort of visitation during the night that told him the secrets of a potentially exciting new Squid fishing setup. He must really have the fishing bug bad if he comes up with a setup that possibly no other angler has ever thought about before. You can't say the guy isn't a tryer...but afterwards he hits his Totally Awesome Workshop where he has several jobs lined up, including making a new handle for an antique tool using a piece of seasoned Cherrywood from his log store. Add to that painting of some battered lures and all it adds up to some entertainment to keep you occupied. More important..thinking..How about improving on that weird Squid fishing setup? You never really know, the man could have something going here...

    I thought to myself "If he catches anything on that rig then I'll kick the cat" I know I shouldn't have doubted you Graeme but the cat got lucky. Great video again. I could watch people working in their workshops all night long. It gives me ideas for things I want to do. It's great to see such an inovative angler as yourself working with new experiments too, that's why you've written so many books and we haven't.

      Hi Steve,
      For sure Graeme's Beach and Boat Fishing videos are the best. Maybe that's because he is all alone and his creativity really shines through. This also shows in his Workshop videos.

    A good thing for fishing weights are scrap reinforcing bar from building sites where you can chop them into little 1.5 inch & 2 inch lengths so that you can weld a bundle of short lengths around a single longer length & weld a U staple to the end then paint them up as cheap fishing weights. Most handymen out there will have a stick welder or some type of welder & staples from the hardware are very cheap plus if you're a handyman you'll have leftover paint as well that needs to be used up.

    For fishing at night for squidding or catching fish around a pier etc I use one of those 36v 4.4Ah electric skateboard batteries connected to a 36v-48v to 12v 10a converter & a 12v 10w submersible LED squid or fishing stick with about 20m of 12v cable on it so that I can dangle it under a boat or over a pier or out into the surf which will give me 12 hours & 40 mins of use during the night while fishing. The best squid jigs I've found were ones that are like a skewer for putting bait onto as well as the squid barbs on the bottom as well as a glow in the dark bean to attract the squid. The squid tend to be caught easier when they are hanging onto a bit of bait as they are being dragged out of the water.

    I really enjoyed watching you make the new handle for that tool. There are some things I might have done differently, but purely as a matter of aesthetic or mildly ergonomic value. 20 years ago I'd never have thought I'd enjoy watching someone make a handle for a scraper! We live and learn! 😀

    Graeme, put a fish strip of on the lures back with your elastic thread. The light doesn't catch the squid but attracts plankton and in turn attracts the baitfish. This takes some time to happen, By that time you've cast again. Put a small ball weight on the bottom then a foot up use a stand-off loop of six inches and put your lure on it then repeat maybe with a different lure above. Set your depth, so the weight is just bouncing on the bottom, that will make your jigs move up and down like a panicked prawn with the wave or ripple action by the float. The fish strip can be added if nothing much about. I have put this to good fishing on an eelgrass covered bottom. The fish strip will get a better pull as it makes them more competitive to grab the bait. Have always loved your vids mate both sea and fresh water. Keep up the good work, Graeme and well done. Even got you fishing right next to my boat alongside Brixham breakwater.

    Love the experimental Jig Rig, conditions were against you so no squid this time. I hope you stick with that rig and try it in deeper water, I feel sure it would work. I believe a busy mind stops people going senile as you keep the brain active so nothing wrong with that. Again you demonstrate wonderfully how to revive old tools, that handle looked very professional. Thank you for a wonderful post.

    Tomorrow s my first time beach fishing. I done lots of sea fishing from boats in the past but nothing for 15 years. I learn from the best TA fishing but not sure what bait one will be using as what you have in the south is not what we have in the way of fishing here in Northeast Whitby coast ..The only way to do it is to just get out and do it yeah? Not expecting reply from Greame as he only ever seems to reply as one comment man . Thanks for all your teaching G as watched most of your teaching videos but its never ending gear and i don't have never ending money ................. I will do my best to bring in at least one fish... not a blank but the sea is dying and fish stocks are really bad . Once again thank you for everything ..I will use your methods with a twist of my own

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would suggest getting in touch with your local sea fishing club in the area. They will put you right as to rigs and baits.. Mussels whipped on with bait thread was what I heard up that way,but not big casts or it blasts off. I don't know if lugworm is good up that way. The only fishing I ever did up that way was boat fishing out of St.Abbs. Codling I recall,but from the shore I really don't know. This is the right time of year to try,and fishing into dark should increase your chances., Good luck with it.

    Another great video GP, if I asked my missus to do my pack up she would roll over laughing...on a serious note back in the day when I did lots of fishing from the boats whitby/bridlington and off the beach at spurn point, I used to paint my hooks with nail varnish, also used it on jigs and lures....works really well and easy to come by in various colours....at work I used to ask my mates to get any old varnish from their wife or girlfriends, ended up with quite a collection.

    We use something similar squidding. Personally I put the jig and float on a separate trace with a snap swivel. Cast the main rig out and then clip the float and jig on and let it slide out. Can do the same with a strip bait when the mackerel are around.

      That's interesting to hear,I thought it might be something like my body odour that was keeping the beach fish away from me, so the fact you are not getting Whiting down your way makes me feel a bit better. Whiting should be in plague proportions in November and December I don't understand why they are not in ? Are they late ? Global warming ? eaten by all the intrusive Bluefin ? Or will they not come at all ?..I hope some show up soon or its going to be a biteless Winter on the beaches.

    Ok odd rig but I've seen odder rigs like a 6 hook flapper rig ,3 hook running ledger and a 3 three hook up and over rig. they all caught fish. Worst rig for tangles is a Wessex rig. On the safety note for old codggers like us. One very serious possibility that can happen with out warning is a back spasm. Very painful and it can immobilize you completely some times it's hard to breath they are that painful. Always have your phone to hand or have some one with you.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been there several times...a bad spasm will drop you to your knees with pain..its unbelievable,then you are terrified to move in case it spasms again..Osteo told me the pain is to stop you damaging something,the body's way of saying "No" to a particular movement. I do exercises every single morning to hopefully minimise it...Horrible.

      I reckon there is something wrong with the inshore seabed ecology to be honest. Graeme I am surprised yo do not hang a bucket under your Tripod. I learnt the hard way its easier and safer than any amount of sand and gravel over the end of the legs.. I usually have water in the bucket to wash hands etc

    Great video, have you ever tried using the light sticks on dead baits for Pike or Zander at night, i wonder if this would work!

      Yes,I believe there is a film up on our playlist where we caught Zander using lightsticks.

    What do you think about using pigs liver for bait instead of worms please give me your opinion thanks Mark

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chicken liver is,I undestand,pretty good for Catfishing ,so I imagine the same goes for Pig's liver. I would sooner use worms but if you can get the liver to stay on a small hook why not give it a try ?

    Errrrm was the jig not 4.0 Oz rather than 40g? You might have been fishing the worlds daftest ledger :D
    I actually tried a similar thing last year though just using a bubble float to present the rig......sadly bubble floats and bouncy oceans don't get on.

    Where did you get the bluey from, I tried everywhere with no luck

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly coastal fishing tackle shops should stock them, but I know Finch Farm Fishery usually has frozen packs for Catfishing. You might try them.

    Looking at the lump of bluey going out early on, is there any advantage sending it out so big vs splitting it in half along it's length? - split it offers a similar visual-sized bait, larger area for scent release, and your bluey gets two chances rather than one.

      Lot of oil in Bluey and down Somerset they often make a wrap of Lugworm and fillet of Bluey so probably worth trying up my way. Mind you they have much stronger tides to push the scent trail laterally along the beach . I used to do quite well by splitting a mackerel head down the centre ,leaving a hinge and then folding it inside out. Gruesome to look at,but appreciated by Bull Huss and Conger.

    Tried beach fishing not really a fan I find it a bit impersonal if that makes sense I prefer the calm of fresh water. I’d watch you if you were fishing in a puddle though you’re great.

    Its not the rig (which is innovation to say the least) its you can't catch em if they are not in front of you ☝️🧐

    Saw buckeyes ( the nuts) on the bench, or are they monster hazelnuts? If they are buckeyes, do you know what the Indians used them for( American)?

      Conkers,from the Horse chestnut tree. I believe they do call them Buckeyes in the States. Over here my daughter puts them in the corner of each room to prevent spiders.Old school thing, I heard the same thing when I was a youngster.

      @@TAFishing My tribe would grind them and add them to streams to paralyze fish back before whites. It is illegal now due to the greed of them.

    32:25 do you think you will ever go marlin fishing again ?

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only if I have a mind blowing offer !! I've done a lot of it so cannot say "I wish"...but of course I do miss those tropical sunshine days,sparkling blue ocean and twang of the tag line on the outrigger as the band breaks and the reel starts shrieking...Usually at this time of year I used to be chasing the Striped Marlin and Sailfish of Mexico's Cabo San Lucas.I check on the sites now and then...they are hauling them in at present which is exactly when I used to be there. End of November/Early December. Even my wife caught Marlin there !!
