I´ve always been puzzle, or was puzzle with why evangelical voted for Trump, and defended him, like some prominent pastors did, knowing that he is not exactly a role model, he is not even an evangelical. Your explanation helps me a lot to understand why it was. Thanks to youtube and to your interviews I have found a possible explanation and even though I haven´t read your book I see things better now.

I grew up in what I like to call an "evangelical adjacent" denomination. The General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (GARBC) is definitely fundamentalist, but not exactly evangelical - although I definitely saw the evangelical creep during the 2000 election. I'll never forget the shock and horror my brother and I felt when we heard a pastor at a church we were visiting (we had just moved and where looking for a church) pray from the pulpit that George W Bush would win.
My brother and I had absolutely no idea who Bush was or who his opponent in the election was. All we knew was that one of the key founding principles of Baptists was Separation of Church and State. We'd heard all about the Rhode Island Baptists and how having a secular government that kept out of the church (and that the church kept out of the government) was one of the key characteristics that set Baptists apart from many of the other groups of Christians in the American Colonies. And we recognized that the pastor was attempting to influence his congregation through that public prayer. I think if it hadn't been for that incident, we quite likely would have gone to church there. For the record, our parents were the ones that taught us all about the Rhode Island Baptists (it wasn't in any of the classes we'd taken, nor in any of the Sunday School lessons we'd had), but they didn't seem to see a problem with the prayer.
The sermons were becoming more reactionary by the time we left the church that my family finally settled on after moving back to Iowa in 2000. We ended up leaving that church around 2009 for several reasons - including the fact that when my mom lost her full time job in the recession, she ended up finding work that required her to work on Sundays and Dad ended up getting a 2nd part time job that also required him to work on Sundays. Ofc the reason we stopped going to that church in particular was because of a disagreement between the Associate Pastor and my mother and then it was basically clinched when it turned out that same Associate Pastor got caught in an "inappropriate relationship" with a 17 year old girl in the Youth Group. And my parents just never found another church they wanted to go to - I think they like sleeping in on Sundays TBH. That was fine with both me and my brother - my brother has gone anti-organized religion in his... unique way. And I'm now an atheist.

It's incredibly clear this has been exported. And for any senior who isn't a traditionalist and hasn't been swept up in the far right experience of religion - whether evangelical or Catholic - much of this has been obvious. As she points out faith has changed. You hear people spouting ideology in the name of the Bible - everyone walking in lock step - when interpretation used to be individual among members of this group. I don't see much in the way of individualism. Glad she's sees the machismo aspect, as I see that too and I see more and more black men buying the propaganda being spouted by the right about the Democratic Party (which has it's issues but not as misrepresented by the right). It is racialised and anyone who is not white who really believes these folk are their allies are fooling themselves. And if you see the right wing as a avenue to get ahead, it will be at the expense of other people. At the core, there is a lack of cooperation with other Americans unless you believe like they believe. Perhaps you want to live in an authoritarian world and think you'll have a place in it.

Paul references living 100% off this kind of charity in his epistles. These communalist values were the seeds of the monastery system which sustained Europe for over a thousand years. I appreciate Kristin introducing me to patriarchy. Having grown up in the Assembly of God church, literally attending no less than four services per week, listening to hours of sermons on record and cassette weekly, it wasn’t until I read her book that I learned that I have lived an isolated life. Aside from one usher that was decisively chivalrous, I have been surrounded by men who were humble, soft and unassuming. I had no idea that this was a matriarchy. Rarely did I hear a peep about women submitting, or about male headship.
I grew up with seven sisters and a great God fearing mother. My father passed away when I was only 8 yrs old. Little did I realize my masculine deficit until my wife decided that she had had enough of her weak, spineless, unassuming husband. Using her sexual power wasn’t enough, she was going for a lawyer this time. But first, she would kick me out of the beautiful house I built for her, was barred from our four children, and would sleep in the house that I was trying to rent out.
With no real support from my church or any other church for that matter, I took it upon myself to discover manhood. I want to thank Kristin for introducing me to “patriarchy.” Because I certainly didn’t learn about it at church, as she supposes. Perhaps she isolates herself to Amish churches?
Kristin laments that we didn’t elect the pro-abortion feminist, Hillary Clinton, because Trump is a big bully and his pro-life position interferes with a woman’s autonomy. It’s proof, she claims, that men want to control every aspect of the female’s choice over her own body. All because of patriarchy! Patriarchy is the problem, because men want their little babies to live. Yes, she really does say this in her book, read it and weep. What has the Christian university come to?
As she complains about men and their interest in guns, hunting and war, I wonder if she ever considered what abortion statistics show, .4 million lives were lost in WWII, approximately 250 million babies lost their lives due to chemically induced abortions since 1973 in the USA. Planned Parenthood reports the number of abortions performed each year in their annual report. Planned Parenthood’s 2005-2006 annual report states that from 1977 through 2005, Planned Parenthood performed 4,068,749 abortions in the USA. Other PP annual reports show they committed 264,943 abortions in 2005, 289,750 in 2006, 305,310 in 2007, 324,008 in 2008, 331,796 in 2009, and 329,445 in 2010. They reported 333,924 in 2011, 327,166 in 2012, 327166 in 2013, 323999 in 2014, 328,348 in 2015, 321,384 in 2016, 332,757 in 2017 and 345,672 in 2018. Again, that’s just for Planned Parenthood. I’m not pro-war but why would a Christian woman advocate abortion on demand? I would bet that she would expect her daughter’s school to ask her permission before giving her Tylenol. Why wouldn’t she expect the same for an abortion pill?
In short, this book is pure feminist propaganda, and I think I’ve demonstrated that she’s a hypocrite who knows little about the American church.

I’m sorry that that happened to you, Jim. Wow: It sounds like your former wife employed the tactics that are historically associated with the patriarchy - emotional and logistical domination that is non-consensual, thus not agreed upon. Anyone who takes power over anyone else, namely in an aggressive way, is not acting from a place of love, but rather from an abuse of power - regardless of their gender identification. I can sense the pain in your post, if I may say, and pray that your heart will heal. It sounds like what happened to you, in your marriage, was not okay. I have no idea what went wrong with your marriage or your divorce, but, with respect, it has no logical connection with the history of american evangelical's vision of masculinity, or this interview. Except, I guess, if I am reading you correctly, you expected your church to intervene in your divorce and support you. But I did not question either the teachers or the students who offended me with racial nor discriminatory comments. I question their faith and how it always avoids difficult subjects like slavery or years of genocide to take over the land of natives. The problem is not how the Christian masculinity has evolved to what it is. The problem is the protestant ideology been forced to others from the arrival of the first eligals in the continent. Culture and religion takes thousands of years to develop. The oldest protestant ideology is no even 840 years old. Most quoted Old Testament verse in the New Testament: Psalm 110:1 “The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’”
God has enemies & he will triumph over them in sweeping fashion. I 100% agree that the church has adopted a counterfeit version of masculinity. But to use that as an argument to say that men & women shouldn’t seek to be agents of Jesus’ victory in our world seems to be out of step with what God is up to in our world. Jesus both loves his enemies and defeats his enemies-He doesn’t need us to figure out or advise him on how to do that. We repent for missing the mark, open his Word & obey the spirit’s marching orders from there.

She makes several good points about how current “Christian” masculinity does not jive with scripture, etc. But I suspect that her research suffers from the same problem that plagues all research in the social sciences. Namely that the researchers usually always find the evidence to support their thesis. History is very squishy; it’s not difficult to interpret it according to your bias.

there's a section in the book where she shows how fear played this important role in the rise of Evangelicalism, and how Evangelical leaders stoked the flames of fear in their congregations. While they did this, it had the effect of solidifying their personal power. We can't know if, for the leaders, this was an intentional or conscious strategy to grow their power and influence... but I don't think it's particularly biased to observe that this happened.
De Mez's book documents occasions when evangelical leaders were responding to threats that did not actually exist. We know the threats did not exist because we have hindsight. Evangelical radio pastors and national leaders claimed the white race was ending, Americans would have their homes seized by secret communists in the government, the bible would be made illegal, etc.
They spread these fears to their congregations. They made it seem as though christians and Americans were facing an imminent existential threat. These fears were used to justify a lot. In reality, though, the evangelical church was never genuinely under any real threat from anyone, much less to the point its survival was at stake. Their fears were totally unfounded.
This point about fear is connected to the movement's history of sexual abuse. It is ironic that a movement which is so preoccupied with women's sexual behavior and purity (say, when it comes to divorce), in reality, ended up passionately defending the rape and sexual assault of their congregants. The evangelical church, like the catholic church, has a shameful history of protecting perpetrators, lying to cover it up "for the mission," and destroying victims. The Catholic church has attempted to make amends, but the evangelican movement still seems unrepentant (at least IMO).
The sexual abuse stuff is just one example of the dangers of this overreaction, this state of being locked into a life or death battle with a phantom. "The mission" can be used to justify anything, even if 'the mission' is totally unmerited.

as a reference (KJV ) numbers 25 read the chapter pay close attention to the verses 7-13 ,Phinehas the grand son of Aaron the priest saves the children of Israel .
And in Roman’s 12:9 the word ( abhor that which is evil and cleave to that which is good)
Also a example verses of masculinity Rom12:1-21. These applied then and today!! The difference is that the law of the land doesn’t not allow anyone to run persons through .Titus 3:1-6 Titus 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work. All examples of masculinity .
Definition of masculinity =qualities or attributes regarded as characteristic of men( just sayin) 🙂

I absolutely think it's time to re-evaluate culture, but I would tend to suggest a different vision for that re-construction. Why reconstruct christianity? It has a long stories history, and not much of it is good. Most of it is grizzly to say the least and frankly, I don't think it can be any other way. Why not create a more secular nation that lives up to the higher moral standards of secularism and strive to make those values even better? It seems to me that continuing christianity is unnecessary, makes good moral values more difficult and less likely to prevail. Consider, just as one issue of many, how do you make a christian? Generally, people become a christian before they can question what they are being told. The very reliance on reaching people before they can question what you're telling them is not a great tradition. Combine with that the use of fear as a a weapon against the mind of a child and it becomes very grizzly business indeed which it is doubtful christianity can survive without engaging in. I think deconstruction and reconstruction is right, but I don't think we should bother including christianity in the reconstruction.

Interesting interview I read Jesus and John Wayne. It is a super polemical book. All white evangelicals are stereotyped into one racist, patriarchal, and militaristic. A more nuanced book could have done much good. Unfortunately, this book had an agenda and seemed to force a one basic bad agenda on all white evangelicals It does not take long to see that how the agenda was created. The author has admitted that alternative models of evangelical masculinity were removed from the book by her or her editors. Her definition of patriarchy includes any form of complenmentarianism. She has defined patriarchy as any system in which males have leadership over females. What I mean is any view that would limit church elders to men or teach that a male is the spiritual head of the family is patriarchy because makes have leadership over females. Thus I cannot see how she cannot say a soft complementarian is does not believe in patriarchy since they hold to some form of male only leadership even if it is in a very self sacrificing and nuanced way. Thus all complentarians are lumped in the patriarchy basket with those that believe that women should not work or hold public office etc. She compares in this video Egalitarian vs. patriarchy. It seems abundantly clear those are the only two models or views as far as she is concerned. That is important since it helps blend radically different views of patriarchy and complementarianism into one story. It confuses things so one story can be told. No nuance.
She can have her own views. That is fine but I think it is important to realize that the text puts widely different views on women, politics, military intervention, and racial views into one camp I see it as a newer (20th century) form of history in which a subject story becomes primary. You find it also in the 1619 project that forces a slavery narrative over the founding of the US. Its history has been criticized by many early American historical scholars for trying to fit a slavery narrative into the founding of the US as otive even when it makes little to no sense. There are many books out here that are highly polemical from liberals and conservatives. They can be interesting and fun but one has to really be careful that one is not just being sold a narrative instead of history.

@@PhoenixProdLLC If it were all that simple. But it is not. History and facts have to be interpreted and that is where often there are major disagreements. what is in the minds of the people saying or doing what they did? Do you know or not? when one uses an outside interpretive grid such as radical feminism to interpret history then the truth can be radically distorted. it is hard enough to figure out what are the true facts themselves. Does children signing "I am in Lord's Army" really support militarism in Christianity or not? What is the meaning behind the song? See how history is not as simple and so easily distorted by a historian with a particular interpretive bent? Just the fact that the author calls all people who are not egalitarian as patriarchal is very telling. She is not being objective.

The title is a reference to the song 'Jesus and John Wayne' by the Gaither Vocal group. The song is about being raised with a nurturing empathetic mother and a domineering father. The book examines how those different qualities became entrenched in the identities of Christian men and women. Quick summary: Christian fear response to godless communism, the questioning og America's moral righteousness following the Vietnam quagmire, the women's rights act, civil rights act, all triggered evangelicals who concluded that it was all due to the erosion of traditional gender roles creating a generation of "weak" men. The solution was promoting an image of the Christian man as a dominating warrior who is always fighting God's/America's enemies.
