  • This time I am reviewing a little French car in the heart of the Dutch riverlands together with my Brother. The 1972 Peugeot 204!

    High speed was 138 KM/H and O/100 KM/H within...19,8 sc :-)

    Great little thing! Remember my dad simply drove it at a steady 75MPH on almost any road. French cars, typically the slower 60’s and 70’s one, can be driven hard, pedal to the metal. They’re designed for that. Think of the twisty French roads with all the steep hills! For the same reason: superb suspension, great road holding and precise steering with great response and feel, so you can maintain speed and make swift progress.

      Yes but no power in hilly areas....fine on level terrain for sure...and 400 series highway in Ontario...but you didn't use the highspeed lanes! LOL!

      @@brettatton You are wrong they are smooth with good torque on hilly terrains.

      @@guhanandanselvadurai5298 You have obviously not driven one in Canada! On that hill ef we did not accelerate as much as possible before the grade (and in excess of the speed limit!) the 204 needed third gear before the top. We would then be traveling less than the posted speed limit! There is only so much an 1150cc engine can accomplish! Lovely car...we enjoyed it very much but the 404 and 504 were even better!

    Don 't forget Peugeot 204 is all independent suspension beautiful and comfortable little car.

    Drove this car in the 70s. The earlier models had column mounted gears while the post 73 models the gear lever was mounted on the floor. Peugeots had the best brakes even then. The post 73 to 80 Peugeots were plagued with rust, later models were rust protected very well.

      All 204s had a column-mounted gear lever except for the RHD versions from the 1970 model year onwards. Actually, the steering column was modified for the 1970 model year and Peugeot didn't bother designing a specific RHD column-mounted gear shift and used the 304's floor-mounted lever instead. RHD cars before that were a mirror copy of the LHD versions and the gear lever and indicators were on the left while the ignition key was on the right.

    Awesome car review! Enjoyed learning about the Peugeot 204 from both you and your brother. The design of the Peugeot 204 looks so smooth. The interior of the car looks so elegant. It's a bit perplexing regarding the key ignition being on the left side and the turn indicators being on the right side. I want to see Peugeot break back into the U.S. Auto Market. I think the French automaker can find a way to distinguish themselves.

      I feel they would do well, but they got to make sure their dealership network is spot on. And that is the most difficult thing to get right. Thanks for enjoying the video! Much appreciated!

    To explain your "French are weird' observation, most of these cars had the steering wheel and attached controls where your brother is sitting. When I drive an American car, I shift with my right hand. Americans are weird.

    These are very nice small cars, but when I was in my early twenties in '71 in Germany on the French border, we drove these things flat out. All of the cars back then had wind noise. So 120 kmh...you're being too careful.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But 45 years later, is the car still as structurally sound as when it was new? Maybe being careful with it isn't wrong.

    Would love to Renault make its way to the states. My brother actually saw a Seat up in the area from Mexico a while ago. He had no idea what it was lol. We do really miss out on some cool stuff.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SEAT sure are nice to look at, and they don't perform badly at all, but they are just cheaper versions of VW, mostly at the cost of sound dampening. You're not missing out on THAT much.
      But French cars can be quite interesting indeed.

    • @TheDutchTexan

      This was shot around Maurik and Eck en Wiel! Nothing better than riding (or driving) a winding back road. Would be cool if I could do all my reviews there! But, I live in the states now, so I have to make due with what I got. There are some back roads here too, but they are a ways away. In the Netherlands they are literally in everyone's back yard.

      I love doing classic car reviews. I am a classic car kinda guy! So if someone (in this case my brother) offers up I would be inclined to do it. They usually lack in the views department I've found, but it's a good thing I don't do it for views alone! The experience driving a classic is great, and I'd love to do more of them in the future. Heck, I want my own classic to drive around as a channel mascot / project car.

    Lekkere auto! I wish there were more Renaults and Citroens here but I think those manufacturers would find it tough to provide the expected level of dealership service and support here in the states. I'd like to be wrong because I'd love to drive a Clio Williams every day :)

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the big problem. There has to be a solid dealership network. Everything hinges on that, I believe I read that they are looking at a slow return to the US market currently. I hope it happens!

      Its a great little Car and it doesnt matter that its slow.
      Because now you have more time to enjoy the Car.
      I recently bought a 1982 Subaru REX Kei Car with a 660 cc,
      2 cylinder Engine with 27 KW ( 37 hp ) and its a blast to drive around.

      I bet it's a little go kart! Must be so awesome to run that around town! And as I said, so nice to drive slow. It makes me want to get a classic and daily it. Sure, mine will have a V8, but it is strange how a classic slows you down. Before I know I'll be doing 55 in the right lane. LOL!
