As a child, when I got into a Peugeot 404 taxi, it was so smooth and delightful that I didn't want to get out of the car.

Father owned a '72 just like this in Sky Blue in Jamaica, bought new. He sold it in 1996, still running.
Simba... Love the engine sound from outside. A rugged beast if you take good care of it. There's plenty of 404s here in Kenya. I'll definitely own one someday.

I grew up in one.gosh lots of fond memories
What a classic car!! These operated mainly in Malaysia as taxis in the 70s and 80s. No air conditioning then, but typically there is a small dash mounted 6" fan. The front windows is equipped with a quarter glass which can be rotated to draw air into the cabin when moving.
I had a 1969 model - no A/C but an excellent heater. And the quarter panes helped with airflow.
When I travelled long distances in the 70s, I always wished I would get a 404 taxi. The Diesels had superb torque

My grandfather owned a brand new 404 ‘74 . I still can remember driving around in it with him. Grandpa I miss you.

We had several of this model & can still remember the no plates. I think the petrol filler was behind the no plate. In these earlier Peugeot models, I think a sun roof was standard. Did well in the East African Safari Rallys of the 60's

Der Peugeot 404 ist ein Auto, das man nicht vergisst, wenn man es gefahren ist.
Sieht altmodisch aus, bietet aber schon Scheibenbremsen und Servolenkung.
Man sitzt wie auf dem Sofa und fühlt sich in einen französischen Spielfilm versetzt.
Die Heckflossen sind als Fahrer von inn
en gut zu sehen und sind eine tolle Parkhilfe.
Technik und Elektrik eher labil...

Very popular with Irish farmers in the 1970s, along with the very similar design, the Austin Cambridge. Usually seen with three sheep in the boot.
La Peugeot 404 che per me era un baraccone , specialmente quelle a gasolio , e Copiata al 100% dai francesi al nostro 2300 Fiat berlina anni "60 non aveva niente a che vedere con la nostra macchina grande ammiraglia di quegli anni!!

Le volant est monté à l'envers et sur la route le moteur émet un bruit anormal: il cogne comme si une soupape fermait mal...voire peut-être un problème d'arbre à cames rayé?... en tout cas pas le bruit "lisse" du moteur de la 404.
Engine Sound is very harsh and knocking. Usually it sounds like a turbine.

1960 : Les premiers modèles
Dans la matinée du 9 mai 1960, la 404 est officiellement présentée au Pré-Catalan à Paris.
La ligne a été dessinée par Sergio Pinin Farina, qui avait commencé sa collaboration pour Peugeot avec la 403.
Moteur : 3 paliers, Essence 1618cm3, 72ch SAE .
Boite : C3 , 4 vitesses grille « inversée » (1ère en bas et marche arrière en haut, vers le volant) identique aux 203 et 403 (mais 4éme en prise directe).
Modèle unique Grand Tourisme (toit ouvrleclub404.com/les-specificites-du-modele-60/ant, intérieur tissu), très facile à identifier, les grilles d’aérateurs sont carrés, les baguettes extérieures sont larges et les jantes couleur caisse.

I wish they made small sedans like this ntoday-the high roofline means athat adults can actually sit (comfotably) in the back seat! Those swept back melted jellybean cars today are a torture for people in back.
