As a Japanese, first I discovered these kind of songs was when my classmate (who was an American exchange student) asked me if I was familiar with the commercials on these videos. Funny enough, I asked who was the artist singing and he said it was a guy mashing up old songs and beats. I got curious and we went down to a rabbit hole of artists doing the same kind of music like this. Its really amazing. I enjoyed this kind of music genre now and it’s really cool to see them utilize older Japanese commercials to visualize the kind of music they created.
Learning japanese to sing along with future funk and read vaporwave song titles > Leaning japanese to communicate with native speakers (jk it's all love)
These vaporwave songs are resemblances of the 1980-90s eras where people were enjoying carefree life without worries, particularly it was the time where everyone got access to goods and exotic technology from Japan. At that time, some people in the US were worried that the Japanese would take over the world by buying out American corporations (proto-economic globalization), but it all ended when the Japanese stock market crashed in the early 1990s. Fast forward to the late 1990s, people still had this carefree feeling but it also ended when the planes hit the twin towers. 9/11 did not just end the feeling we once had, but it also ended the future of a utopian electric interconnected world. Now watching these videos, it's kinda nostalgic for me because I grew up seeing these sorts of blurry commercials with reverb sounds. it's like a future-past.
I am 55 years old and grew up abroad in Japan. I remember seeing alot of these ads on the TV screens in the windows of the shops as I passed by. It's amazing to see the young generation repurpose such a specific memory in the form of this beautiful art. God Bless!
@@dasit6034 But for those of us who weren't alive yet to actually experience those days, the nostalgia is artificial (Or it was before the song became a decade old). And that nostalgia for a time we didn't live in is a staple of vaporwave for many
I thought "artificial nostalgia" was perfect. The artists creating *-wave music were born 1990 or later.. It's "artificial" because you feel nostalgic despite not recognizing the exact samples or commercials.
i feel like i am slowly going to the to the bottom of a bottomless pool of memorys and as i go down i see them all in the water, and slowly being wrapped arround by the darkness of the pool, and it get darker, and darker, and you know the is a bottom but is seem like there isnt but you are still going down like it seem forever but you never know. nobody never knows.
It’s so bizarre yet it makes so much sense, that an artist from Brooklyn can make a song, then a guy completely unknown can make a video of old Japanese commercials and combine the two to make piece of art. With an aesthetic that we all can enjoy an atmosphere that makes us feel good. All deriving from promising commercials and good jams sampled from an 80s track called pillow talking. So simple it all really is but that’s where it gets complex. Absolutely amazing I’ll always come back to this something like this. It is An Art

Who else gets a really great feel-good feeling while listening and watching the music videos for vapor wave, there's always something happening in the video that makes you smile, it's amazing.
ariixxrose Right? Back in 2013-2015 I was nostalgic for an era I had never really known. Now I listen to this and I'm nostalgic for that actual time when I first found it. The human condition is strange.
Back in 2016, when I listened to vaporwave I used to feel nostalgic for a time I was never alive for. Now in 2021, listening to vaporwave makes me feel nostalgic for 2016. Crazy how life slowly but surely assigns meaning to itself.
Nostalgia man. Nothing like that first time. That's why a lot of us pine for the 80s and 90s and 00s so much, we're trying to recapture that initial feeling. They really were better times.
The first time you watch this video, you find yourself thinking; "well, this is pretty fucking weird, but i kinda like it". And then, when you watch it for the second time, you're like; "something about this video gives me a feeling i've never felt before. I can't explain it very well, but it's very heartwarming and nostalgic" and then you're hooked, you'll keep coming back to it
A lot of Saint Pepsi's music ( and a lot of other vaporwave/future funk tracks) combined with the videos always give off a carefree and slightly nostalgic vibe. It's just people having fun. Listening to these songs make you want to live in a permanently dark city with the mesmerising flash of neon packing the scenery. They make you think about romance and business, giant skyscrapers, summer beach resorts, and video games, movies, TV and books and arcades and they make you think about being free and not having a care in the world. Have fun, baby!
I enjoy this so much. Reminds me of then the world wasn't so serious.. dunno if that's just me or the fact that I've grown up. Really wish I could just go back to the 90's again.
I first discovered this song in summer 2016, life was good and I had this jam on repeat. I didn't know it at the time but it was a truly magical time. I revisit this jam every now and then and just wish I could go back.
Dude, first time I heard that Macintosh Plus song I felt really scared for some reason but safe because of a nostalgia spark. It was pretty weird. After listening to it every now and then I felt a bit happy and safe. I think about my childhood often now. I miss it.

GEretarded // If you're referring to the new animes with the exaggerations, edgy characters (talking with eyes closed/side ways and chin down, bringing his/her katana everywhere, irrelevant western names and other crappy bullshit they consider to make their characters look good), "fan service" and cartoon physics, then we're cool. Hayao Miyuzaki's movies are fucking amazing.
Man, I was so depressed while I was in college back in 2013. Private Caller always cheered me up those late nights alone in the dark finishing reports/essays. And now having a career, when I'm down I still put this on to get me though. Forever miss the vaporware genre at its height.
I'm glad Private Caller was able to bring you some comfort during those tough times in college. It's amazing how music can have such a powerful impact on our emotions and help us through difficult moments. Vaporware was definitely a unique and influential genre, and it's great that you can still turn to it for support when you need it. Keep listening and finding comfort in the music that speaks to you.
These videos always get me sad because I know when I look at these people they’re probably like 40-50 or something now. They just seem so young and alive here and it’s all just a memory now. Gets me in my feels.
This is the fucked up reality... been trying to accept this reality since early 20’s... it was really hard turning 30 knowing im one step closer... meanwhile seeing my mom knowing that shes much closer to the finish line than i am knowing as a woman she feels this exact same way seeing her only 30 year old daughter😭😭😭😭😭 Life is soooo fucked up😭😭😭😭
Feeling this on vaporwave make me also realize how many ppl were probably snorting cocaine while listening to this... Its random but lets just fucking admit... this is very strong cocaine snorting music... that why the experience listening to it feels so strong😂😂😂
This song is almost 10 years old, I remember listening to this thing way back. Honestly the best word to describe Saint Pepsi’s music is timeless. Good luck Saint Pepsi/Skylar Spence in future albums and projects!❤
I remember when I found this song, I didn't want to share with anyone because I thought they'd think I'm crazy or insane. I didn't want to tell anyone about Vaporwave. But now that I look back at this video, 3 million + views, how big Saint Pepsi has gotten, how deep Vaporwave has evolved. I never felt so indifferent before. Thanks, everyone, for listening to this stuff and calling it "music". Because without you, I don't think I've ever grown out of my shell. I can't think of a cool way to send this off. -Dave
I'm not even a 90s kid, but I remember malls fondly, even if they were at the beginning of their decline. My local mall used to be full to the brim of people on the weekends, now it's just a ghost town with a macys, jcpenneys, and a theatre. I miss the days when I used to be able to go to Toys r us as well.
Saint Pepsi really elevated the genre to a new level. I respect them so much for being original with their vaporwave remixes of songs by actually creating music and not just slowing them down.
Saint Pepsi, also known as Skylar Spence, is definitely a standout in the vaporwave genre. Their approach to creating music that is engaging, energetic, and original within the genre is truly impressive. By infusing their own unique style and creativity into their remixes, they have set themselves apart from others in the scene. Their ability to take existing songs and transform them into something entirely fresh and new is a testament to their talent and vision as an artist. They have managed to push the boundaries of what vaporwave can be, elevating the genre to new heights and garnering respect and admiration from fans and critics alike. Overall, Saint Pepsi has made a significant contribution to the vaporwave genre by staying true to their own artistic vision and creating music that is both innovative and exciting. Their dedication to pushing the boundaries of the genre has truly set them apart, and they continue to be a driving force in the evolution of vaporwave music.

No other vaporwave song encapsulates this feeling of nostalgia and the existential crawl of time so perfectly and frighteningly serene, as if you were just first figuring out that your life no matter how luxurious will always be fleeting, and being content with the beauties of life, that money can't buy.
The track "Chinese Dance" by Macintosh Plus captures this feeling with its dreamy, ethereal sounds and samples. As the song progresses, it evokes a sense of longing and reflection on the past, causing the listener to contemplate the passage of time and the impermanence of life. The haunting melodies and distorted vocals create a sense of melancholy, but also a sense of acceptance and peace with the inevitable passage of time. It is a reminder to cherish the present moment and appreciate the fleeting beauty that surrounds us.
Ahh old school days. Before the materialistic throw away society. Where self image is everything, "To them" and more important then doing right by other's..Fuck the new world
RFKFANTS67 Don't romanticize the past. There are good people today, and there are shitty people today. Same as it was in the 80s, the 70s, the 60s, etc. Nothing new under the sun. You only remember the good parts of yesteryear.
Exactly my dude. Nothing new under the sun, I like that phrase. It's all about finding your place. People in the 70s thought they got the same bum deal that we think we got when they looked back on the 60s, but just like us, they were only seeing the best parts with their rosy tinted glasses. All about finding your place. All about leaving pretentious comments on youtube too, but that's my place.
for all the people who never lived life before the internet, the "weird" nostalgia you felt was a longing for the past's hope of the future. years later it feels nostalgic in a different way, nostalgic for a time where you never thought the future would be like this this genre perfectly encapsulates the feeling of life's mystery before the internet came around. almost like that feeling when you still believed in magic idk what happened but "wonder" exists less and less maybe it's just me
This makes me cry because i'm witnessing an era that i wasnt alive to see. An era that i will never get to see. Man this makes me happy and depressed at the same time.
no vaporwave is not right wing. vaporwave is a cynical, somber reflection on the acquiescence to consumerist and capitalist culture that took place in this era. if you listen to vaporwave and think "golly gee I sure love this soulless corporate music and CONSUME advertisements, wish we could go through that again!" you're completely missing the point of the music. the era we are living through now is the consequential progression of that era. consumerist culture has, pun intended, consumed us, and we sat there drinking pepsi and watching TV as it happened. and if "racism and oppression" sound "awesome" to you, you should consult a therapist.
The capital society. Honestly I love it to death. It feels real because the world you live in is determined by the people themselves, not through the bindings of a forced regime. Through all the corruption, greedy businessmen, and liars, there's that semblance of a determined future that is within reach. An imagination expressed with each sale, an emotion conveyed with each commercial, its a wonderful construct that paves way for a brighter tomorrow. Its free for your eyes only. Only in a negative lense does it look cruel and bleak. I understand that through personal anguish. However, its a bitter road to take and we must all walk the good way with heads held high no matter the squander that surrounds us. It really is something worth the gratitude in the end. Great video man and a wonderful song to go with it. I've listened to it everyday.
+Joseph Franc The world is only cruel and bleak because people only accept it like that to make up for the fact that they aren't in a position to enjoy all that the world has to offer. But there is no external force that can provide the best things in life, we have to work and move forward in this world to get there. It's easy to dig the dirt for the potato when the fruit tree seems so high, but we must always reach forth for what is greater. I listen to this song every day, and always see not only nostalgic past, but a bright future before us all if we make it happen.
\/\/|-|At? I had a strike of genius! Anyways, it was just something I felt like typing. It sounds stupid, but I had to get it off my chest (not HAVE t, but you understand).
+Joseph Franc it is only the illusion of a better tomorrow, a mortgage taken out on a futures stock where everything gets better because we will it. These videos are a return to the dream that we once had, the dream that was light projected onto vapor, disintegrated in the next strong breeze. Now the breeze feels bittersweet, cool on our skin, bringing back the sensation of the memory and the memory that it is gone forever. I am bitter, indeed, that the dream was ever given to me. There is no salvation.
I was going through a hard time when I wrote this. All I was doing was wasting time. Its deep and weird, but hey at least some people seem to find it entertaining enough to read. Wasn't expecting to get the likes.
thank you saint pepsi for sparking my interest in vaporwave which led me down so many roads i could never have imagined, this song is beautiful, thank you.
Hahahahhahahhhahahhahahhahhahhahahhahahhahahahahahhaahahhahahahhahahahhahahahhahahahhahahahahhahahahhaha *inhales* hahahahhahhahahahhahahahhahahahahajahajhahahhahahahanhahahanjahanajjahahajajhahahajahahahhahahahahahahhahahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa You think you're gonna live that long 😆
That feeling when you've been listening to this song for years now and when you found this you thought to yourself "Things will get better, I'll be happy soon". But then here you are years later, still sad, still smoking weed, still listening to this, still trying to escape to a past you have never had or experienced because it reminds you of a time when you were happy. Then you realize that you are addicted to nostalgia and will probably never be happy because instead of mentally moving forward in your life you've stopped, still clinging to the tattered remains of happy memories. Oh, and you're only 21.
+SUNSETDOTCOM I guess the best thing to do would be to make that nostalgic past a part of your future reality. We've reached a period of stagnation because that progress-oriented mindset among people has been replaced with complacency and an over-exaggeration of the concept of compassion. There's no elevator of the outside that can bring us up, we have to lift ourselves up. At the end of the day we have to push through that barrier and make that future for ourselves.
You're only 21. Things tend to get better. Life is always a struggle, one way or the other; if you want to achieve whatever you define as success, the only constant in your life is that you'll have to work hard. So work at it, whatever it is you want to achieve. You either achieve your goals or die trying. Nostalgia is fine to experience, but don't hang onto it like a crutch. And this is coming from a 23 year old who isn't exactly having the greatest time right now; life is OK for me, but there are certainly areas which I want to see improvement, and there are big decisions that I'll have to make soon enough that will dictate my near future at the very least. So enjoy that S M O O T H V A P O R, and experience the full range of human emotion. How can we know happiness if we have never known sadness? But remember, this too shall pass, there will be better times, and worse times, ahead. But you're on this crazy rollercoaster called life, and as long as you keep getting back up when it knocks you down, that's all that really matters.
I regularly come back to this masterpiece since I first listened to it in 2016. The dope vintage commercials along with the warm music induces nostalgia for an era I didn’t even live in.
it's nostalgia for a future that never happened, will never happen, it's why vaporwave has a "retro-futuristic" aesthetic. The video clips are all made completely of ads, ads that want to sell you what life is like and will be like or could be like. But now decades after we see how none of our lives really even echo any of it. It's a lament over the dream capitalism sold us when we were kids and watching TV and how it's faded unattainable qualities have made it beautiful.
That's a laugh. This is my past. Pleasant back then but it was always elemental (EDIT: ephemeral). The present celebrates nothing but junk and destroys what was good for its time so they can pretend we were brainwashed. I've heard their bunk for decades. It's never changed. It's envy as art, it's disgust remaking the world in its own image. It's easy to ignore.
No you're just arbitrarily attaching your ideology to it because you are so entrenched in a political echo chamber that you can’t see anything but from it’s perspective.
@@Thattgirl6789 its always a kind of spooky thing to think abt since these commercials r just passing moments in their lives and we dont kno who these ppl r yet the whole world saw them once

my life is becoming to get engaged with this type of lifestyle, in which there are mixed the elements from my childhood, how do i used to see the world, and the brightness my fathers told me should it be, is great to find music that can express a lot of good feelings, cause by one side we have the nostalgic of the past, but for the same shiny past we can believe in a better future.

Yep, same here. Add future funk songs to that mix too.
Nostalgia man. Nothing like that first time. That's why a lot of us pine for the 80s and 90s and 00s so much, we're trying to recapture that initial feeling. They really were better times.
Nostalgia for nostalgia.

No other vaporwave song encapsulates this feeling of nostalgia and the existential crawl of time so perfectly and frighteningly serene, as if you were just first figuring out that your life no matter how luxurious will always be fleeting, and being content with the beauties of life, that money can't buy.
A very beautifully written comment
The track "Chinese Dance" by Macintosh Plus captures this feeling with its dreamy, ethereal sounds and samples. As the song progresses, it evokes a sense of longing and reflection on the past, causing the listener to contemplate the passage of time and the impermanence of life. The haunting melodies and distorted vocals create a sense of melancholy, but also a sense of acceptance and peace with the inevitable passage of time. It is a reminder to cherish the present moment and appreciate the fleeting beauty that surrounds us.

All about leaving pretentious comments on youtube too, but that's my place.

vaporwave is right wing
no vaporwave is not right wing. vaporwave is a cynical, somber reflection on the acquiescence to consumerist and capitalist culture that took place in this era. if you listen to vaporwave and think "golly gee I sure love this soulless corporate music and CONSUME advertisements, wish we could go through that again!" you're completely missing the point of the music. the era we are living through now is the consequential progression of that era. consumerist culture has, pun intended, consumed us, and we sat there drinking pepsi and watching TV as it happened.
and if "racism and oppression" sound "awesome" to you, you should consult a therapist.

DiscoKitten5 true, being born in the early 2000’s sucks and doesn’t suck for its own reasons
AmericaFirst Amen brother.

+zach upah shit man, this hit way too hard for me. doesn't help that i have imnsonia and depression
V A P O R W A V E ::: T H E R A P Y
I like these vintage type videos.
Watching vaporwave videos always reminds me that advertisements are a legitimate and complex art form all in itself.
this song could make a 3 year old feel nostalgic

No
it's nostalgia for a future that never happened, will never happen, it's why vaporwave has a "retro-futuristic" aesthetic. The video clips are all made completely of ads, ads that want to sell you what life is like and will be like or could be like. But now decades after we see how none of our lives really even echo any of it. It's a lament over the dream capitalism sold us when we were kids and watching TV and how it's faded unattainable qualities have made it beautiful.
amazing comment dude, you've hit the nail so perfectly on the head
That's a laugh. This is my past. Pleasant back then but it was always elemental (EDIT: ephemeral). The present celebrates nothing but junk and destroys what was good for its time so they can pretend we were brainwashed. I've heard their bunk for decades. It's never changed. It's envy as art, it's disgust remaking the world in its own image. It's easy to ignore.

I was 13 when this song came out, I remember vibing to this song at my 7th grade school dance. 2013 was such a good year. I gotta visit my old middle school for some nostalgia
Brother, now I feel nostalgic for the time when I first discovered this song, truly magical how music and media makes you feel like this
Why do I feel nostalgic about something I never experienced?
Teeg mind peeping our recent lofi rhymes ;)
It is the reason why I love so much this song
because humans will not get other epoch equal than this epoch. Epic days!
1980-2000 was the pinnacle of popular culture, its been all downhill since then.
but guys this arrangement belongs to our era. And we can share and talk about all this in this era. So I think we are lucky to enjoy our music and before us. Our era might be better
AFTER LIKE ONE HOUR SKIMMING THROUGH THE ORIGINAL SAMPLES, HERE ARE THE *LYRICS* (believe it or not, it might not make any sense but that's how the samples were placed together)

I'll ask to borrow their pants some cold and lonely school
I think we can all agree that the 80's was the peak of music and culture in general
I think this is more 90s isn't it?
@@splendidmate Naahh The 80's was way better
nope. if that was true everyone would still dress the same and make the same music. it was okay but definitely not the peak.
These comments...Whew. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is nostalgic because of how the music sounds and the time period they were made in. Bring back vaporwave 2024, fr...

Don't care what your friends are 'bout to
Don't care what your friends are 'bout to say
What your friends all say is fine
What your friends all say is fine but it

Boy, just put that stop sign down
And let's get together before the day wears us down
Don't care what your friends are 'bout to
Don't care what your friends are 'bout to say
What your friends all say is fine but

Boy, you'll tell me wrong from right
I'd love to fall in first in a cold and lonely school
It's crazy to think that this song came out 10 years ago and I'm just discovering it. If there is one thing that the TH-cam algorithm gets right, its the music
My dear friend and I were so obsessed with this music video when it came out we spent hours shopping around to try and recreate the outfits. I’ll never forget how good we both looked, me in a oversized Hugo Boss suit and her in a strapless dress with that beautiful big hat walking together downtown with people literally stopping to compliment us. A memory where will forever be beautiful
That’s amazing!!
. It was like stepping straight out of a fashion magazine and into real life, and we felt like celebrities for a day. The power of fashion and music coming together to create such a magical moment is something I will always cherish. It's amazing how a simple video can inspire so much creativity and confidence in us. I will always hold onto this memory as a reminder of the joy that comes
I feel a heavy hole in my heart after listening to this... while it's always euphoric throughout. I've never had a song make me feel this way, and for that reason I keep coming back to it. This is the definition of timeless art.
At first you go, "hmm sounds ok" then you come back and you don't know what you missed before that makes it sound like a masterpiece.
Where the hell do you find these vhs tapes?
VHS by far was the format that has so much content created and released on. The amount of VHS tapes out there is crazy! Anyways vhs tapes are abundant, you just have to look in your attic, thrift store, etc....

Boy vaporwave was something wasn’t it. A genre that will always have a special place in my playlists.
this is cool- i forgot the name to this song and its been like 7+ years since ive heard- i opened up youtube and it was recommended- thank you. thank you.
I know vaporware is supposed to make fun of commercialism and all that jazz but this video is more like a celebration. It's so liberating sounding and the video is so well synched it's just wonderful.
This song makes me cry every time the beat drops, it's like a hug on my soul.
my soul has been synthesized
+cloudbloom You have gone Full Synchro.
We got to Japan every year and this always hit different while listening walking around Tokyo. Def in my music library’s top 10 play count of all time.
So grateful to be alive to experience this
my life is becoming to get engaged with this type of lifestyle, in which there are mixed the elements from my childhood, how do i used to see the world, and the brightness my fathers told me should it be, is great to find music that can express a lot of good feelings, cause by one side we have the nostalgic of the past, but for the same shiny past we can believe in a better future.
+Alejandro Ordaz You just summed up why I love vaporwave. Stay well my friend :)
My Korean friend's mom just walked in and asked why we were watching videos of her childhood.
I have been listening to this on my nokia phone back when I was 14 years old and I still love it , despite all these years
This should be played and watched across the galaxy 📡

Man, one day this is gonna be actual nostalgic music. This came out 8 years ago!
I got into vaporwave because it exploited the nostalgic feelings I have of songs I would listen to on late 90's stereo systems as an impressionable kiddo.
It already is nostalgic for the 2010s generation
