Steam has such integrity right now, but it's still a huge concern what will happen once their leadership changes. HW3 was such a gut punch of a disappointment. The campaign is the shortest in the series and was clear they cut content and changed the story late in development instead of adding more chapters/maps and missing ships. When mining the initial release game files to see how modable it would be there are semi polished parts of the old story cutscenes they cut out and some incomplete/broken maps. Looking back, it's clear what happened. As the game was starting content fill Gearbox hired a DEI consultant and embedded them at BBI. When GB announced the extra year delay it was not to finish the game. The time was instead spent to put the consultants face in the game as the MC with a weak ass story rewrite and lore retcon. Another franchise ruined.
I didn't expect HOMEWORLD to get torpedoed by the DEI plague. I shouldn't have pre-ordered the game, but homeworld was something special. What they delivered is an insult.

Homeworld 3, it starts out feeling like a homeworld game. Then it sharply changes direction and runs off into dei story telling "goodness". You can literally tell at what point in the game development they decided to hire Sbi.
Pretty sure when the lead developer who led the game (apparently there was a social and political shift during development) Figures that out she will try to have the company stop selling the homeworld series out of spite.

Valve practically saved PC gaming. If it wasn't for Steam wed have a subscription based gaming service. They tried it with GFWL and if it weren't for Steam wed have had no other alternative. GOG, EGS etc all owe their success to Steam too. Steam held the gate open for them and stopped MS monopolising the PC gaming market and inevitably killing it which imo was the plan they had to get people to buy their games consoles.

I can only assume that when Homeworld 3 got greenlit, anyone who had any experience making any kind of Homeworld or space RTS game was just, no longer available to help them make Homeworld 3. So they just had a ton of new rookie developers. Now the thing was, obviously, Homeworld 1, was made by a bunch of amateurs too, sure. But they also didn't have a bunch of weird other criteria in the memo sent by corporate to hamper them.
Best I can tell, they had competent people onboard... then when the SBI style 'consultants' came in and demanded huge changes to the story and characters, the competent bailed out.
They had H1 devs as the founding members of the studio (BBI). So either they got no say in the making of the game/were pressured out of the decisions they could make, or they’re just not the people who made Homeworld 1 so simple yet great.
When I learned that you when you create groups of different units, they wouldn't travel together was a dealbreaker. Their incompetent devs didn't just slap a patronizing girl boss story on it, they broke fundamental RTS mechanics too. If you send fighters, corvettes and frigates to escort a capital ship, you expect them to stay together, but instead the game would send all of them to the destination at their best speed, and they would get destroyed little by little. Its as if the morons never plaged an RTS before.
I remember the days when Gearbox were so good, they created offical expansions for Half-Life 1. Borderlands 2 is a legendary game. It is so sad to see how far they have falled. Side note, Gearbox also pulled support for Borderlands: Pre-sequel before the release of the 4th DLC, after Gearbox had promised 4 DLCs and after pricing the season pass for 4 DLCs (which has not reduced in price, and for the longest time you could buy the 3 existing DLC individually cheaper than the season pass).

This is probably so steam can officially take refunds from the companies who reneg on passes or future content, instead of refunding customers out of the steam coffers. I'm pretty sure steam would offer refunds even if they had to cover it themselves, because after 3 games (of the same price) that customer is profitable again, and they're probably going to be pretty loyal after that. While I'd like to believe valve cares, it's more likely they'll take a short term loss for the long term profit
Borderlands 3 was so close to being a good game. The actual game there was pretty cool, the guns were great, sound design rocked, most things about it were pretty cool - until the new characters started talking, and the old favorites started dying. I am convinced to this day that the devs included a separate audio slider for character voices, because even *they knew this sucked, and they weren't happy about it.* The fact that a recent patch introduced the ability to skip the whole story only reinforces this belief in my head.
I grew up on this franchise. My dad bought me a new GPU for Homeworld. Built my own rig for Homeworld 2. Now, we come to 3. Look at how they massacred my boy!
Holy, i thought what they did with HW3 was bad enough but... wow. I was a big fan of HW1/2 and was excited for HW3, until all the changes and whatnot came to light. HW3 had the potential for being a game i'd grab at launch if it was good or like HW1/2. I guess I was still open to the idea of maybe HW3 could turned things around but well, it doesn't seem so likely now. How fitting to be have 'bird' in their name, gotta let them game eggs hatch before you count them (and maybe let them grow a bit too).
Knew the game was gonna be in trouble after trying out that multiplayer demo with its god awefull control scheme. There was something wrong with everything, from the ship designs (terrible turret placement on capital ships with no modularity) and how fast they move to how fast the overall TTK was due to how low they set the HP on all capital ships with no (in the demo) directional armoring or shields. Maps also felt very small and cramped in the demo, and apparently still is even in the games skirmish mode, which is just terrible for this type of game that requires very wide open spaces to properly enjoy them on a multiplayer match.
Homeworld Cataclysm was one of the most iconic games of my teen years. Homeworld 2 was okay-ish but not gamebreaking, the ground based RTS spinoff was basically a dumpster fire, so I didn't even bother to follow up on the Homeworld 3's development. Looks like I dodged a bullet.
Gearbox are exactly the reason I no longer buy season passes for games. During the leadup to the launch of borderlands 2 they implied that the season pass would be a way to make sure you got all the DLC, but before the first DLCs were even out they started announcing more that wouldn't be covered under the pass. That they would now try to just not deliver sold DLCs is just the next step of the same scam.
They did it before. Borderlands Pre Sequel seson pass was suposedly 4 dlc like Borderlands 2. They made first to medium succes and than cancaled secound one and told us the 2 remaining dlc was character packs like krieg in tina XD Yeah those 2 char totaly have same value as 4 ploted multi hour dlc that you took money for. In border lands 3 they did dirtier thing even. They made those 4 dlcs with last one being like half of regular size and then announced Seson Pass 2 more dlc that costed half of price of orginal game and was just 1 skill tree and 1 new chalange map then I stoped following it.
Dont quote me, but its likely because something like that can probably get you in trouble if enough complaints are filed in the EU. The EU has pretty stringent consumer protection laws and if you screw up badly enough its going to cost a lot more than the price of some season pass refunds. And like any good corporation Valve decided they dont want to pay for someone elses reckless stupidity.
Over a month ago, HW3 had 30 active players on Steam. Meanwhile, HW1 and 2 remastered had 170 active players. HW3 came out this year, HW1 came out in 1999. Homeworld had been an amazing RTS/Story driven series. But HW3 was just horrid. I'm glad Steam is stepping up and helping out those who bought that game.
I was a huge fan of HW1 & 2 for almost 20 years, was about to buy the CE when it became available, thinking it would be impossible to screw up a RTS like homeworld that was made 30 years ago, boy I was very wrong and I'm glad I held back, playing the open beta test literally destroyed my soul.
The spin D&D themed borderlands was a joke when it came to dlc all but the last one should have just been free updates. 3 villains are just awful but i loved the skills especially getting a 4th tree and zain dialogue
I got BL3 years after release, with all the updates and all the DLC for 20€, I had a fun time, the gunplay and mechanics were great, but the writing and charachter were horrible. Would never consider buying the game + dlc for the full price.
That sucks. I'm one of those people that liked Homeworld games. They're probably one of my favorite RTS games. But when it was hinted on that Homeworld 3 would be DEI influenced, I removed it from my wishlist. They used to be cool, man.
I was saying to myself to by a new PC for new games, and especially for Homeworld 3. But after learning more about the bad influence of DEI/Woke garbage, I'm actually now happy that I had some unexpected expenses and I didn't bought a new PC. But now I'm more willing to do so but I'll buy only good games. And not gonna lie... my heart is broken to know that one of my beloved franchise was infected only to push their Woke Agenda and only that.
good for steam, fuck those companies, that said, people that bought homeworld 3 deserve it. those kind of people are part of the problem. i hope they dont get refunds, maybe that way they learn the lesson to not support shitty companies, and to not buy bullshit battle passes or season stuff that is not even completed
AAA Studios banking on IP selling their dumpster fire is why I don't really pay attention to the AAA industry anymore. Even when they announce sequels to previous games that I loved. Most of them I loved in my youth as it's been SO LONG since the studio made a game for the IP. Plus they often announce it so far in advance to build hype that it's like, I won't get my hands on this for a year plus so why should I care as I'm not so desperate as to hang on every tiny detail released. There is also the issue the same people aren't there anymore and seen way too many games completely change when new people come in. They also seem to spend 2-3 times as long making the game which only increases that time gap from the last game and highlights their complete and utter lack of skill. I mean I'm seriously tired of studios saying "Making games is hard." and trying to justify their bloated budgets and long development times with this. Even if I didn't have experience in software development the fact that Indie studios put stuff out that competes with them in terms of quality in less time and for a fraction of the budget shows these companies are just BSing to justify their incompetence. And if the game does take a long time to make it should be briming with content like Baulder's Gate 3, Path of Exile 2, and so on to the point you can see why it took so long. Many of these AAA titles remind me of college projects where it looked like people had thrown it together at last minute instead of taking the full time given to create a good game.

Funny story, other than gimmicks the mothership from the remastered collectors edition which I also own, is much more detailed and has weathering and panel lining while the HW3 mothership looks like some cheap “collectible” you bought at target. I left a negative steam review along the lines of what have you done to our baby!?
Glad to hear I wasn't the only one disappointed with the quality of the HW3 Collector's edition models. They feel really cheap and ugly compared to the Pride of Hiigara released in the HWR collector's edition.
Some may say that steam has a "monopoly" but lets all agree, They prove time and time again Why Users give them that "monopoly" Also lets be real, there is not much of a real competition in terms of those digital stores Like there is gog that has done a good job with older games and being drm free but there are some red flags lately.. and there are others like Epic that i myself completly dont trust
Valve, or at least the current leadership of Valve, figured out the cheat code to a distribution monopoly: Always side with the customers who buy the product.
I bought the collectors edition. It came with some cheap baubles and an awful game. Now I'm not even getting all the garbage they promised me. At this point, I feel like a lot of these AAA companies should be banned from steam outright.

I fell for that trap too. Normally I don't pre-order games anymore. But Homeworld held a special place in my heart. The homeworld stories were always grand scale narratives that were bigger than individual characters. Leave it to the DEI crowd to be unable to think on such a scale and just write some trash about a few Karens instead.

Its as if the morons never plaged an RTS before.

It didn't need to be awesome, it just needed to be not-awful.
Steam is somehow being a better defender of customer interest rather than any other agency... We win again.

Damn you Gearbox
