  • October 26, 1969: Symphony Hall, Boston, Massachusetts (Live)
In the winter of 1969, Horowitz, like the other years, began a concert tour with a new repertoire. The first recital was in Boston. However, critics, all deaf, severely criticized the performance, and Horowitz canceled all the schedules. Columbia didn't record this only performance in 1969 because they thought he would repeat the same repertoire until May next year, as he has always done. As a result of this judgment, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13 was permanently removed from his repertoire.
But not all hope is lost. Since at least 1966 his recitals have been recorded by the audience, and very fortunately, there were some audiences who did the valiant job of record this recital too. Of course it defies comparison to official recordings in many ways, still it's fortunate to be able to get a rough idea of how he played the piece. However, the limitations of pirate recording still exist-you can listen to the raw tape on TH-cam which is only barely listenable.
I did my utmost to make the notes identifiable by remastering the pirate recording, and was the first to transcribe his editing to this piece. I also included a high-quality reinterpretation of his playing of the coda he wrote himself since there is no proper recording of it. I hope this video will be a new experience for you.

A notation was done in 1996 by the late Caine Alder, I'm sure other tried as well. Nice to see though and GREAT work with the sound!

Would be fascinated to see Caine's work. The ending strepitoso plunge fascinates me decades after hearing this recording. (I was the source for its getting on the Internet!)

Comparing this to Volodos' transcription of HR No. 13 is very interesting. I feel like many of his arrangements are attempts to expand/complete transcriptions alluded to but scrapped by Horowitz. 🤔I wonder if Volodos had advanced recordings of this...
