    Tobias sand the R off the bolster it’s easy!!!!!!

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And it leaves a nasty divot in the bolster. To me, sanding it off actually makes it look worse. I’d have to balance it by sanding the other side as well.
      There are plenty of non R knives out there. Had this not been a large toothpick, it wouldn’t be in the collection. And to have a MINT collection of Rough Ryder Toothpicks they sort of need to be mint.
      I bought it for my Rough Ryder Toothpick collection, warts and all.

    Warts and all, it does look like a really handy knife. I need to get one as a user and not a collector. That’s the thing with RR. It’s fantastic that they have all the old patterns and come in at the price they do. So they make great users but then there are collectors and we are looking for the cosmetic features a lot more than a user who pocket drops it and uses it every day without a care about what happens to it. Congratulations on getting another large toothpick. SMKW needs to collaborate with you for what would be the perfect series , just keep the price affordable, lol!

    I recently got the high plains version of this, because it is the only RR large toothpick available anywhere (that I can find), over here in England..
    I much prefer this burlap version, and would get one in a heartbeat, if I could track one down,,..
    Suppose I'll just have to be patient till they become available..
    The high plains, is my favourite RR so far,,
    Thanks for showing us this version,,
    All the best from across the pond,, John..
    ps, my high plains is pretty much centered, !

    I like everything about this knife. I really like brown micarta, and the ringed bolster and federal shield are a nice touch. I don’t even mind the big R on this one, this is one of the coolest toothpicks I’ve ever seen. Thanks for showing it off, buddy!

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My first impression of it would have been an absolute disservice to this specific knife and to Rough Ryder. It's pretty cool. As for the Big R ...I have examples of all 8 Rough Ryder Large Toothpicks. They're all built on the same frame and have essentially the same blade. It's all the minor differences in the exteriors that sets them apart and makes them look great together. This type of appreciation is probably lost on the non-collector. As a collector, the Big R is part of the knife and also has some historical importance for the RR Brand. The "R" appeared on Rough Ryder knives from around 2015 until around 2023. One of the last RR series to have the Big R was the Tater Skins Series.

    I like the Burlap Micarta idea but just not enough to pick up a few. I agree about the longer off-center blades as long as there is no rub, but on shorter blades I prefer to stick to spot-on center or nearly so. It must be one of my prejudices. Thanks for the look Tobias.

    I kinda like the various micarta series Rough Rider has been doing, but I have to agree with you about the big R. There are a few different patterns like the Wasp or Buckshot Bone that look pretty cool, but as soon as I look at the knives, my eyes immediately gravitate to that garish R. Like you do with toothpicks, I collect canoes, so I will spring for those occasionally but again sometimes that R just kills it for me. Credit to Rough Rider though, they abstained from the big R in revisiting the older Stoneworx patterns and thank goodness. The new canoe in that series is just pretty to look at.
    Thanks for the great video, Tobias.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wished they had put more thought on the use of the Big R. I think it would’ve been nice to use as an identifier of a specific series. It didn’t need to go on every knife.
      I also think it would be looked nicer had it been rotated 90 degrees.
      What made it even stranger was how the called it a “Slant R” all the time and it doesn’t slant a good part of the time!
      My issue with the micarta is once again, over use. But then that’s because it became cheaper than many of the traditional handle materials so I get it.

    Happy Sunday Sir Tobias of Gibson, they could have at least put a sachet of Ketchup in the box ! Or since its made in China a sachet of sweet & sour sauce. I am not a Toothpick fan but I do like Micarta scales , I bought the RR2183 Sowbelly lockback with Blue Denim Micarta handles & a clip point blade & have put a Kwik thumb stud on it to make it a one handed opener. I saw they have made a sowbelly model with tater skin micarta but its not a lockback so I passed on buying it but might buy the canoe model at some time in the future

    Great video! Mine had the same blade problem, I really thought it was crooked. But upon examination, the fault lies with the uneven swage. I don't understand why they insist on a swage if they can't execute it properly. In my opinion, it only cheapens the knife if not done evenly. And yes, my blade is not centered, but hard to one side. These two issues bother me much more than the ever-present big "R". And with your help, I have managed to collect every 5" RR Toothpick.

    Great video. I must admit I've been interested in this series because of some of the knives included in it. I'm kind of surprised that more companies don't use some type of filler/sealant on their scales. I'm curious about the durability if micarta scales vs bone or plastic, especially in wet or damp environments.

    • @acid6urns
      @acid6urns 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      micarta handles liquid fine. it’s a resin compressed fabric so it only soaks in the top layer. wet micarta is actually more textured and grippy when it’s wet.

    Seems more likely the goop is a polishing compound, otherwise the liners would melt away… unless it’s applied warm and hardens ..?

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I believe that is exactly what it is. A type of gap filling resin or epoxy Tabatha is applied wet and flexible but then gets hard. I have worked with marine epoxy (water proof two part epoxy) that are start off soft but hardens. I think this is something similar.

    Awesome! Had my eye on the Moose in this series; may have to add this one to my wish list as well. I rather like Micarta and G10, though RR is going a bit overboard with it. I just got this knife and I am almost positive mine has a very slight bend to the right at the tip of the blade , I can see it both looking down the spine and holding it up sharp edge facing me , both ways , I understand what it being said about the swedge, but in my case I'm pretty sure there's a slight bend , I also have a marbles large toothpick , ram's horn with no swedge with the same problem among other problems , I think I have returned more rough riders/marbles than I have kept , wish it were not the case , because if you can get one with barely any flaws , it really is a nice knife for the money , I have just had mostly bad luck with them , shame about this blade , cause the rest of the knife (handle assembly) fit and finish is one of the nicest I have ever seen from rough ryder-

    You might not like micarta but just take a look at the new case 1095 burlap micarta I think it looks far better than the rough ryder (which I love Rough Ryder's ) it's a smkw exclusive series I'm all about the small swell center Jack but also have the med stockman and plan to get a few more in the series later

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Case has always had a much better side by side looks than the best Rough Ryders so I’m sure the Case Micarta blows away the Rough Ryder. I’ve said it on many occasions not all micarta is the same. The same goes for bone, acrylic, wood, stag, etc.

  • @jeroenvoss6231
    @jeroenvoss6231 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would like more bone handlecover patterns also, or different kinds of nice wood for that matter. I have nothing against micarta and i do have knives with micarta, even traditionals but i do love bone and wood more. (stag? yeah you and me both wish) The swedges on small blades and thin stock, yeah i've seen the trick, now get rid of it again. Even on the peanut the blades have swedges and it really isn't necessary, it really really isn't. The big R on the bolster, well they just were getting rid of them, but on this series they still are there as factory errors on purpose haha. Will i buy this one after your review? Well yeah because it shows your smile on the bolster well not yours but mine, but i rather see yours on it because that would be a great one off. Serious; it is a nice knife and yes i will buy one, especially after this review. So thank you Tobias and have a great week. (wouldn't you love to see this one in cured curly oak?)

I sanded down the R on my rr pocket cleaver, & becouse of the larger bolster I was able to make it slant down gradually instead of a big divit where the R was removed , its actually un noticeable ( probably won't be on a smaller knife)

    The products are sub for me. This American response "for the money" opens the door for acceptance of poorly executed products. If it's a knife for a dime,make it right if it's a trillion dollars make it right. I will not accept bad build. And for that reason I have stopped in total with any product I deem as sub.
