When we discuss the Xenosaga Trilogy, it's difficult to find a concrete answer as to whether it achieved it's main aim.
Following the release of Xenogears, which in itself achieved a legendary legacy of it's own, Monolith Soft wanted Xenosaga to be the spiritual successor that would realise the full vision that couldn't be achieved with its predecessor.
In the present day though, establishing what that legacy resulted in is a challenge. And the only way I was going to find out was to play the trilogy myself.
Here's the final part of my first time playing Xenosaga!

WELP! Let's hope Monolith revisits Xenosaga in the coming years and does a complete remake that not only more closely links each game in a consistent style and adds content and context!
The Xenosaga I.P. is completely owned by Bandai Namco. While Monolith is owned by Nintendo.
So it would be a complicated matter. Who will initiate this? Bandai or Nintendo? If Nintendo, they'd need to liscense the I.P. from Bandai Namco, and they'd likely want it to be a Nintendo exclusive. But this is a franchise that underperformed commercially. Meanwhile Bandai Namco could do this without Nintendo or Monolith's involvement, and could have it be multi-platform for maximum sales potential. But even they decided against an HD Remaster when Katsuhiro Harada pitched the idea some years ago, after a lot of fan requests on twitter.
@@celeschan90 I will say it, if you have not heard the news!!. I am doing IT!. I am just hoping Bandai Namco does not shut it down or come after me!!. what do I mean?!. I am working super hard on a new live action movie series of Xenosaga!. It will be a sequel series too. Continuing the trilogy of Xenosaga!. The series is titled Xenosaga V: center of tragedy!. The first part of Xenosaga V will be coming to TH-cam in 2025!.
Xenosaga episode III is clearly one of the best two or three Xeno games and still my favorite game of all time. Even 17 years later.
Personally, I loved Shion. I always prefer messy characters to pristine ones and I especially love female characters that are ambitious and push back against others quite a bit. Also, the characters in Xenosaga were influenced by the enneagram personality system, and Shion being a type 7, going through everything she went through in Episode 3, explains her behavior, I feel.
It's still kinda hard to see her act the way that she did. She basically told her friends "screw you, I'm going with the guy responsible for all the traumatic things that happened in my life." Like I can see what they where going for but it doesn't paint her in the best light.
I can definitely understand why people would like her. She's definitely not a bad character, but she just drove me up the wall.

Not even having played these games, it seems evident that they saw 3 as their peak and just continued to build upon that for Xenoblade. Awesome stuff.
Ah yes, the game that had to put "Shops have returned!" as a selling point on the back of the box.

@@TheKisekiNut Yep you can find it if you google "gamefaqs xenosaga 3 box". Will be the first couple image results, from someone who scanned it back in 06.
The exact phrasing on the back of the case was: “Money and shops are back, baby! Buy, barter, and sell any items or equipment.” Well maybe not ‘baby’. But I can very much confirm everything else is there. So yes, it was something they felt they were compelled to call out.
That scene with Allan is one of my favorites in the series.

It's so awesome that xeno keeps rocking on to this day. Back then when the first xenoblade was released I didn't consider it the same experience but it's cut from the same cloth for sure
Takahashi is too powerful a creator to let something like a change in publisher and IP to stop him
I'm really glad you enjoyed this series. I was a little surprised to find that you hadn't played it before, since it seemed exactly like the kind of series you'd appreciate. It undeniably has its flaws, but in terms of narrative focus, slow burn setup, characterization, and worldbuilding, this is one of the series that really scratched the itch I later came to associate with the Trails series. It's just a shame that it got cut short and had so much reliance on interquels that never saw exports elsewhere. I'm happy that the developers finally got the success they deserve with the Xenoblade games (and seriously, will we ever see a Xenoblade Chronicles X rerelease?), even though those games don't quite do it for me personally.
I haven't played many of the classics, I got in to JRPGs during the 360 era so there's plenty for me to try. Those decisions though come down to my patrons.
You missed another Xenogears reference. One of the boss battles has you fighting a mech that looks like Weltall. When you go back to fight it later, it transforms into Weltall-Id.
End game quests to obtain unique (and broken) accessories, skills, and the like were some of my favorite tasks to undertake. I laughed out loud when the video got to part where narrator said he was bringing out his "secret weapon" because I knew exactly what he was talking about and it brought a huge smirk to my face.

Really wish this game could be downloaded on PS store; still regret selling my PS2 because I foolishly thought I'd be able to find a HD port on current gen consoles.
The first two games were a little rough; but the third played like a Cadillac drives.
If they ever revisit this series, it needs a proper remake treatment so they can retell the story they needed to do and have a coherent presentation. Otherwise, I agree. It's better to let it rest.
Xenosaga 3 is a great game and KOS-MOS is my favorite because she's iconic!
After listening to all three parts I am really pumped for a possible remaster of these games for a modern system. Really hope it happens!

@@jonathansoko1085 Maybe, though with the success Xenoblade has had, a remaster could potentially see more success. Honestly, though, for as much as I do like the games, a straight remaster wouldn't cut it. They'd really need a full remake to be suited for modern rerelease, including expanding on the things that got cut out. To your point, no way they'd actually be able to put that much into it.

A Missing Year doesn't help Shion's character. It adds another trauma to her, but ultimately she already broke in Episode 1 where she tried to mask it and then she completely snapped in Episode 3. I do think a more gradual shift is preferable, however. Episode 3 Shion reminds me a lot of Yukari from P3 The Answer, which a lot of people also dislike while I had no problems with either of them.
Wholeheartedly agree with the final statements, the saga games cant be masterpieces since pretty much every title has noticeable flaws. But you also cant deny their ambition and the scope and honestly 3 did a solid job at fixing most of the previous issues
Its still so crazy how you never experienced this series before, being as big as an rpg fan as you are. These games were what every rpg fan would compare to in terms of how high the peak would go, before the trails series even existed. We used to say if you played Final Fantasy, you have not seen the true depth of what an rpg is capable of in terms of deep complex story telling. These were the games that were way ahead of its medium by introducing certain written themes that were perhaps to ambitous at the time. But alas one of the criminally underrated franchises before Xenoblade became the popular thing. This video game series is in dire need of a full remake project and if it did, I would probably say it could be one of the best rpg series on modern hardware standing next to trails series.
I got in to JRPGs during my mid teens, so well in to the 360 era. I've played very few of the classics, so my patrons vote on which ones they want me to play. Xenosaga was the latest one that got the vote.
@@TheKisekiNut Wow, i did not know that. Some times its hard to forget how many years has passed and how old I am in this generation. I think most people that are into their mid to upper 30's most likely grew up on the SNES like my self. The 90's were the golden age for alot of rpg fans. Though I am sure you know this now which is why your curious to explore that generation of roleplaying games. As many years that has gone by, i don't think anything will ever replace the peak of PS1/PS2 generations. Just so many amazing games from Legend Dragoon, Final Fantasy, Breath of fire, Legend of Zelda, Okami, Wild arms, Grandia, Lunar star story, Thousand arms, Chrono Series, Star ocean, Saga frontier, Legend of Lagaia, Parasite Eve, The tales of series, Dark Cloud, Dragon quest, Digital Devil saga, Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, Xenogears and the list goes on.

Yah, dude... Xenosaga is the true story. Monolith needs to get the rights back and remake it for a new generation of men and women.
I wouldn't say I found Shion to be insufferable... I'll just say that I was relishing the opportunity presented to use Ziggy's Choke on her repeatedly during that boss fight.

I'm still hoping all the previous Xeno games like Xenosaga will get a remake to tie them into the Xenoblade universe.
Given what I’ve heard of the Xenoblade games I can’t help but wonder if they’re supposed to be some sort of stealth continuation/prequel?
Kinda, similar to how Xenosaga was a spiritual successor/prequel to Xenogears. The connection isn't quite as direct, those two could have taken place in the actual same universe, but the recurring themes and components are definitely there. It's definitely no coincidence that a certain major character in Xenoblade 1 with major connections to the Monado was wearing a Zophar/Zohar pendant.
I guess color puzzles really suck for colorblind people. And even though I never played any of these games, I kinda do not really want to if Shion is as bad as you describe her. She doesn't deserve best boy Allen. Also please don't trash on my isekai junk food. Yuya is a good boy. His biggest character flaw is just being unable to say no to people. But he is still a nice person. If I was him I would be way less polite to all the characters that constantly bother him because of how he looks. But yeah, Xenosaga seems like a cool series with crazy lore. But I do love my Xenoblade games and am glad they exist. Rex is best boy and Welsh cat girls are amazing. The greatest gift Monolith ever gave us are Welsh Cat girls. I love Nia. Khaos is cool though. Really cool. And sad you didn't use the swimsuits in the endgame. Erde Kaiser Sigma seems cool too. I guess that was the win button. Great series. Love these videos and hope you have a lot of fun with Shadow Hearts later. And if you decide to play the first few BoF games: They are WEIRD. Just play BoF 1 and see for yourself just how weird it is. Space adventures are really cool though. Too bad Telos never got her own Space motorcycle. It is just way too cool for her.
Hated the anime, just gotta be real. Dude is the ultimate power trip. Nice character designs though.
@@TheKisekiNut Ok, but even if you did not like the MC or the main story, you gotta admit that poor palace guard Owen is the goat. The palace guard commander from the isekai world. The king is a whiny brat and way too overprotective of his daughter and keeps destroying stuff during his tantrums. The princess just keeps doing outrageous stuff on a whim, which causes Owen to grow more gray hairs by the minute. Like, that man has the patience of a saint. His bosses are super demanding and he keeps having to reign them in while they do something crazy, growing more and more gray hairs every single time. I am betting he is way younger than he looks, the stress just ages him rapidly. I was laughing so hard whenever we got a scene with just him and his bosses. And every time I just wanted to give him stomach medicine. Good lord, he needs it. I was actually way more invested in the palace guard commander than the MC myself, because those scenes were just so funny. I think Owen really needs some stomach medicine. He is aging too much from all the stress.

Although the Xenoblade games are arguably better games, or at least more consistent, I think I like the story of Xenosaga more overall.
I get that. I think Xenosaga's story certainly had potential to be stronger than Xenoblades, but I give the edge to Blade personally.
I'll say this. Everyone keeps saying that episode 3 is so much faster than two's combat. Bruh it takes so long to do any significant damige or to brake enemies especially near the end of the game. If u knew what you where doing in 2 you could be done in like 2 to 3 turns. In 3 my god felt like i was siting there for like ages waiting for the break mechanic or to do any real damige god forbid i accidentally healing enemy and have to do that shit all over again. The combat is simpler but in no way the faster. And making boosts gauge tide to the special attacks, meaning you can never really boost without wasting a chance to get more SP after the battle. The event slot gave a reason for the boost gauge. I feel like people really don't understand 2s mechanics. Did everyone play the game just by charging stocks instead of geting the ability to get stocks from breaking. ._.
People enjoying Shion's character must love toxic relationships lol
