I can't imagine moving out of a place like tht to a standard apartment. I would hang on to it for dear life. I wish more apartment builds were like this. Its jst so lovely.
I agree, this was obviously build for “white expats” back in the days, no local building were like this that’s why there’s only a handful of this type of buildings.. you can tell the design layout etc were made to please these people, like the kitchen having a window while cooking and the long balcony and one in the master bedroom as well.. That’s unheard of in local design houses not even back then maybe an actual kampung houses but not the flats houses back then.. it’s kinda unfortunate gov had prioritised “white expat” more then their own, when they were “forced” out of their kampung houses..... wish there’s more buildings like this available they look so charming compared to the btos lol, if btos houses look like this the price for it would’ve been fair lol

I think this apartment is absolutely beautiful and the carpeted balcony really makes for an extra room. I love the fact that it is a low rise apartment block. IMHO all apartment blocks everywhere should be this high only. It makes the living experience human-size and connected to the world. Can you imagine a tower block in comparison. I have been to Singapore several times, but my friends are lucky enough to have a house and I have only visited the HDB which are still excellent IMHO, but I love how the trees meld into and embrace this apartment, giving you a feel of peace and tranquility even though I glimpsed a road in the background, it seemed so far away. Absolutely beautiful thank you. Michael and Mabel are very lucky to live there.
Hi Michael/Mabel, I love that you made so much effort even though it's a rental, and that you acknowledge that you don't know how long you'll stay there, but in the meantime, you do your best to live in the present moment. Buying properties is not for everyone, it's a privilege to many, but not a given for everyone. For some people, especially the culture-loving and nomadic ones who want to live among various communities all over the world, renting could be better until you've found your favorite space to settle down forever. I also love that you collect your pieces from second-hand marketplaces and from your travels as they speak more stories that way and don't contribute to consumerism. You're right that building a home together is a big adventure together that brings a couple closer. Enjoy your stay in Singapore!
I totally agree and was gonna say the same - Michael made a great narrator and presenter out of himself. He speaks slowly and carefully and every word in his script carried value and weight and tells a story. He should consider hosting as his part-time job!
I just love this apartment and everything about it. I can almost feel the gentle breeze blowing onto the balcony and hear the trees rustle, just so peaceful! Thanks for sharing.
So thoughtful, mindful, intentional and intelligent in the curation and creation of this beautiful space. Brings out the beauty and the value of slow-living in a city that's otherwise so caught up in doing and going at full throttle. Lovely!
Thank you for your tour and insights. I loved this so much I watched this twice. Such a inspiring, beautiful, spacious, airy, well designed Art Deco building. Every rooms connectivity with the private vast verandas and kampong greenery is absolutely fantastic. I hope this building is preserved in prosperity. The history and materials are precious, very liveable and exceedingly sustainable.

The apartment is overall so beautiful but the balcony is simply to die for. Hopefully you'll get to live there for many years to come despite your concerns.
I stumbled upon this channel and love, love, love how you decorated your space! I especially love the white walls and the black framed doors. Reminded me of my childhood home growing up in a colonial bungalow in the 80s. The way you decorated the apartment is absolutely beautiful! So glad this channel came up in my YT algorithm.
Another restful space that reminds me of old Mediacorp tv programs like Tofu Street and Phua Chu Kang. Such heritage spaces remain useful given the right tenants! The greenery is so refreshing!
I think your living in an old 3 story Kampong walk up is perfect. I love how Singaporeans put a long table and chairs up against the balcony railing/ wall in order to better enjoy the view / vegetation outside.

Beautiful space. Would like to ask what happens to balcony space (carpets and furniture) when it rains?
The overhang prevents rain from splashing in, even during a storm.
Lovely! What’s the typical rental for such apartments?
What a beautiful space. I’m sure you’ve gotten, or about to get used to the noise from the highway.

Nice place. But with the highway visible from the balcony, I wonder if there would be too much traffic noise.
The proximity to the highway could certainly introduce some noise, especially during peak hours.
